- After three days excavating a medieval cathedral under Coventry city centre, Time Team discovers a burial chamber and decide to break their 'three-day-dig' rule and stay on.
The excavation reveals a major historical find: the skeleton of one of Coventry's first Priors.
The monk was buried before Henry VIII destroyed the cathedral in the 16th century, but modern science reveals that he lived well into middle age.
When Phil gets excited I get excited.

Hard for me to imagine how anyone could not love this programme.

Tony running around a lot, just for a change.
His energy in this series was amazing.
For most history geeks Tony is now far more known for his work in this series than he was as the character Baldrick in Blackadder.
Both are his greatest popular successes in his career.
Many people are unaware of his theatrical successes.
I, for one, didn't realise he was born in 1946 - it's only in the last 5 or so years he's started to look a bit old, which isn't bad, considering he's now 78!
For me, this was the best thing I've seen him involved with - infectious enthusiasm for all the history nerds out there!
(and there's millions of us!)
The side eye that Carenza shoots Mick @25:07 as Robin intones "Take heed that your hearts be not weighed down by surfeiting and drunkensess..." cracked me up...
I think I have watched every episode of TIME TEAM, they still make me smile. I think we all know that Mick Aston was the Queen Bee, he got everyone around him to work because they loved him.
I've rewatched TT probably 20 times. Fortunately, I'm almost as old as Phil now (his 71st birthday of 1/25/50) cannot remember much and delight in seeing what I'd almost forgotten.
when I was stationed in Germany during 1982-83 I visited cathedrals and churches every chance.....you can't help but be overwhelmed at the construction and artistry they held. to this very day 30 plus years I can still remember the impact they had on me as an artist and archeology appreciation. !
While serving in the RN I was stationed for a while at H.M.S. Dolphin. There, I met an ex-Royal Marine Captain who had been a bandleader and he taught me to play a couple of instruments. He did so because he was in the middle of composing a symphony which was to be played at the inauguration of the new cathedral which replaced the old cathedral which was bombed during WWII and while he played one instrument, I would accompany him by playing another instrumental part in order to determine if parts he had composed fitted what in with what he had written. He finished the symphony and it was played as arranged. Unfortunately, I was transferred to a sea-going vessel just before the first professional playing of the complete symphony, so could not take part.

Phil, Mick and Tony....what a team....If they hunted for 20 years they wouldn't find the magic that these 3 produce when they are together...and I get the feeling they are real friends, not just tv colleagues, and I think that's what makes this special. So many people in life don't like the people they work with and lack any kind of camaraderie or good feeling, so its such a pleasure to see this bunch winding each other up and making it such a fun time. But any woman that gets involved with Phil will have make room in bed for the shovel, because he doesn't go anywhere without it
Mick and Tony were friends before the show. Mick invited Tony to be the presenter. Mick was also friends with Phil.
I've a feeling that Tony was one of Mick's students at Bristol Uni's Extra-Mural Studies department when Tony was studying archaeology after his experiences digging in Chichester. Mick'd have known Phil from the Wessex Archaeology lot in Bristol. Nice tight-knit team core. It's pretty good to have a presenter on something like this who actually understands rather well what's being talked about.
Tony's worked on a number of digs and he's also done a good amount of study at an academic level: he's described himself as an 'amateur archaeologist' but chances are that he is qualified enough to successfully apply for Practitioner membership of CIfA.

This episode is a marvelous example of the challenges of city digging. And how all the maps were off by quite a few feet, partly because the earlier excavation didn't record their finds as well as might be. A truly great episode.
My great aunt was the model for the Lady Godiva statue outside the cathedral.

I am forever grateful to my daughter for telling me about this show. We laugh that I talk to the episode - bronze age pottery I yell, or high status, with a British accent. I watch at least one episode a day. Thank you Time Team.

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes of this wonderful series. It just amazes me that they were able to build and demolish such monumental structures as that gorgeous cathedral back in the Middle Ages. This is one of several sites that Time Team worked that I wished that they would have stayed another 3 days or more on. There is just so much history on this site and they were really in their zone on this one. When that happens, and it doesn't always, it seems to me that someone should have made the call to make it a 2 part set of episodes. Just saying. Lol. I love this series. There is nothing as good as this on TV now. Thanks so much for sharing these videos with us all!!! God bless you, my friend!
I share you wishes that they would sometimes make a 'part 2' at a special dig. This one certainly seems worthy.
In this case they did, in a Special from 2001. Used to be on TH-cam, but now withdrawn it seems.

Even with the audio track waaaaay out of synch with the video, this is far more interesting than a lot of American programs.

That was so interesting! Coventry has so much incredible history, it should be up there with must see places to visit like York and London. The local incompetent council have done a piss poor job of promoting the cities tourism industry.
I've visited Coventry in 1991 and loved the city. Got to see the ruins of the old cathedral and got to see the new one. I wish that I had spent more time there.

Love this show read a recent interview with tony Robinson and the reason behind doing this was even better than the show- he is a really compassionate man. Thinking of others. Sometimes people get a big head when getting some popularity or fame not tony Robinson. He showed people how cool archeology and history can be. And he got them interactive in it that’s the best love seeing kids enjoying this and getting their hands dirty. Favorite one was when the children cut down trees and actually made an ancient plow. That’s one awesome way to teach kids history. Doubtful kids get to do that in school these days. Lol
@Robert Stallard So you can't actually say that any of is true as you weren't actually there to witness any of what your so called good friend and advisor to Time Team told you?
The evidence we have in these programmes shows is that a lot of great and sometimes boring archaeology was done in all these programmes and the way it was presented appears to have been done mainly in chronological order.
You can't view more than 20 years of video and see or hear even a hint that such underhand techniques were employed to produce the episodes. There are plenty of interviews on YT of the main characters and the only point of disagreement was about the budget cuts and staff changes towards the end of the series.
Many of us have learnt a lot about our history here in UK and other places. We have also had to re-learn a lot of we were taught at school and have Time Team and Channel 4 to thank for that and thanks to Reijer for putting it all here for us to continue our learning.

I also noticed that you said your friend advised on ONE episode of hundreds. Thanks for the clarification. I would love to know more about the site and archeology recording for future exams or digs, I find archeology so fascinating!
Hmm... it would be a bit difficult to film all the changes of weather and increased area of trenches and follow the discussions of where to open a new trench if Tony was only there for a few hours on one day.

On the 'recycling' of the stone. I live in a town called Guisborough, we have the remains of a huge Priory that in it's day was one of the biggest and wealthiest abbeys in North Yorkshire. When it was sold off by Henry VIII a lot of the stone was incorporated in to the buildings in the town. You can see bits of fancy carving and inscriptions embedded in to various walls and buildings around the market place.
I went on a guided "high parts" tour of Wells Cathedral the other day, and there was an old Celtic cross from a gravestone hidden away 'behind the scenes' upstairs, as part of the masonry of a little window. I've always imagined large cathedrals and villas getting their stones robbed for houses, not graves being pinched to build cathedrals, so it was really interesting :)

Corenzas arch pun, was brilliant. I still amazes me, using basic machines and man labour, how these Cathedrals, were built. It just goes to show what great potential, the human body is capable of, unfortunately very seldom realised in our easy society.

This episode brings to mind the wonderful book Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. The protagonist is a time traveling historian who returns to Coventry Cathedral at the time of the Blitz. In his day (2057), the cathedral is being rebuilt, having been razed to make way for a shopping mall.

Absolutely wonderful episode! Henry VIII and his henchmen will have a lot to answer for on judgement day for the destruction and desecration of such a magnificent cathedral. Lastly, while understanding the importance of archaeological work, I am not comfortable when the grave sites of monks, buried with solemn rites in consecrated ground in the Christian hope of resurrection, are disturbed. I can only hope their remains will be respected and reinterred in a proper way .

+Leopararouen I agree, and in the end all the destruction, and religious persecution in the cause of securing a male heir for the throne was in vain. Other than the very brief reign of Edward, England was ruled by his daughters Mary and Elizabeth. What a tragic waste!

Have you seen the series 'Tudor Monastery Farm'. It gives you the essence of the people who lived around the monasteries and how their whole life was wound around the monasteries. Economically, religiously, morally, intellectually and ethically the peasantry and the monastery revolved and grew around each other. When you get a real feeling of the times and the people you realise just how much was lost when the monasteries were dissolved. It was not only the monks and church hierarchy but also the peasants who suffered as well. Their very livelihood was stripped from them causing poverty, sickness and death.
But looking back we can only take a lesson from it and make sure that we ourselves do not follow the example set by the Monarchy. Before we condemn a people we must first take a closer look at their belief system and how they live and think very hard before we act against them for our own personal gain. With power comes responsibility.
How was the body disrespected? You do know people at that time routinely dug up older graves and simply put all the remains together in one grave when they needed room right? How is studying them to further our understanding of the past disrespectful or any more disrespectful then being forgotten and built over?

If Coventry was severely leveled by bombs that would explain the "lack" of character other cities have that didn't suffer the same fate during the war. During post war reconstruction the focus was on speed of completion more than any other consideration..It makes sense to me...
Yes, Coventry was particularly hit hard by the German bombing of World War 2. However, the post war reconstruction in Coventry, and in many other British cities, apart from being done fast, was also done with a 'modernist' architectural style that has left many British cities looking heavy, grey and depressing. This style of building continued into the 1960's and 1970's. Today, this 'modernist' style looks rather grim and continues to blight the appearance of many British cities.

No problem at all, happy to be of help. I did archaeology in England for a time and still have a passion for it. The 'modernist' style was considered, certainly from the early 1950's onwards, to be progressive and egalitarian. A real break with the past. Unfortunately, it didn't date well and within a couple of decades it already looked worn down, cheap and depressing. Prince Charles in particular hates that style of architecture. Gradually, many of those 'modernist' buildings are being pulled down, or at least improved aesthetically.

Seems Mr Henry VIII's fits of pique were ALWAYS destructive.
By that time, the church controlled England, lock, stock and rolling pin. Bishops lived like kings, and kings couldn't take a deep breath without permission from the Catholics. iow, the Catholics were tyrants. Henry VIII took exception to that, and the people supported him.
Oh, as a younger man, Henry was in pretty good shape and known as a handsome man. ;) Hunting, jousting, and all of that.

I really love watching this show. A little disappointing the sound is out of sink, but so long as you don't watch them too closely when they're talking it isn't too bad.

Wish there were built in tools to adjust the audio/video sync. I had a program that i used to do just that to a video file that had audio out of sync. The program had a option to delay audio starting at any random amount of time after video playback starts or even before video started….

Interesting that some people feel the new Cathedral is ugly. I think it is very attractive, though the connector between the old and new might have been less chunky. But compared to its sister church of reconciliation, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial in Berlin - which is so cacophonous - wow, this one is gorgeous. And the interior is magical.
I used to live near Coventry and saw it many times (including a memorable concert by Tangerine Dream inside the main cathedral) I never did like it, inside or out, it hasn't gotten any better over the years!

What would they have done with the body? Reburial? Put it on museum display?
My understanding from comments on the show and in the comments sections is that anyone found on consecrated ground is studied and then reburied again in consecrated ground. That's Church law.

That large piece of rock/architectural feature would weigh, I estimate, 700-800 lb.

Oh dear, please read your history. It's not so black and white. Henry was a tyrant, a womanizer and jealous of the monasteries vast wealth, but also very brave to take on almost the entire known world of Catholicism and break away from Rome. The monasteries all over Europe were corrupt many of the behaved like mafia, involved in extortion and theft of land. In fact we have to thank Henry for many of the freedom's from the oppressive Catholic church. I'm not sure which daughter you are referring to but I'll guess it's Elizabeth again an incredibly brave lady, in constant fear of her life and protecting England from invasion not only from Europe but Scotland, who were allied with the French and Spanish.

One could have hoped for a less mixed bag: more good and less waste and horror. He took what he wanted and wantonly destroyed so much else - did he really have the people benefit?

I am an American Descendant of Wm Clopton of England Later to Kent Co VA his line directly back to many including Longshanks. Wm the Conqueror. But also Leofric of Mercia and Lady Godiva who funded this church and its building. at the time the finest. I hope that they are testing the dna of these ancestors buried of thes old sites to see from whence they came.
My line is G-L43 like desd nr Oetzsi found frozen in Swiss Alps age 3500 yrs. We branch from Switzeland about 1500 and spread from there up the Rhine, both sides, thru to Denmark, Groningen, Frisia. Lots of cousins up there even 5th cousin levels.

Henry didn't like Benedictine monasteries because they were rich? Just the opposite I would imagine Precisely because they were rich he stole their money and property and made himself rich! Only a mad man would have destroyed the artistic, historic and religious patrimony of a country. Some "Defender of the Faith" indeed!

How did the floor of the cathedral building [40-minute mark] get to be so far down?
well the walls are really tall,, like really very tall, so if the floor wasn't low down then the roof would be too high up
They said the church was on a hill initially, I'm willing to bet when they leveled it out that side was just nearer the base of the hill.
Soil naturally piles up over the centuries. So you find medieval close to the surface, Roman further down, and so on. Uneven, though, depending on forestation and river activity, so sometime it doesn't happen. That's when you find Romans at the surface.

I've had the joy and privilege to watch many of these, BUT to me it's irritating that they only have 3 days. It amazes me that so many of these places are buried so deep.
i am sure those conversations are choreographed, but it is nevertheless fun listen to them. because i think all this -explaining - is done for use the -uneducated - hobby archaeologists. who would have otherwise no idea what all those -lumps and bumps - and bit and pieces of wall or glass or shards would have been.
but on the other hand - raiders of the lost arch- from Carenza Lewis, no scriptwriter can come up with that?

Heh. Short version: Kings of England were mere puppets under the Catholic church. Henry VIII didn't want to play puppet on a string and he had enough $$$ and power to fight back...when the Catholic church refused to play nice. Catholics had rather oppressed the people of England, as well. There's a reason why the earlier Vikings raided wealthy monasteries and cathedrals, instead of the poor peasants who slaved for the church.
The people of England didn't have the money. The Catholic church had all of it.

to deliberately ostracise someone. Coventry was a Parliamentary stronghold, so sending someone to Coventry was indeed a punishment. (Needless to say, TT was well far from being ostracized 😊)

Yes.
They visited the historic landing site of St Mary's City, Maryland (S04-E01).
Phil & Tony went to a dinosaur dig site in Montana in 2001.
They also went to Jamestown, VA for a 2007 special.
Not to mention keeping the illusion of Tony the Enthusiastic Presenter going for three-plus decades in spite of his despicable shortcomings. After all, Time Team was a very popular show that aired for twenty years; seems like some one besides your friend would have noticed his true colors. Actually, your buddy sounds like a jilted lover whining over a rejection while Sir Tony is still sought out as a speaker, presenter, writer, etc.

It`s not a catheadral Mick, it`s cathedral.

Im here an confused by it sometimes.....
This as well as many of the older (8 yrs) episodes, have a problem where the voice and images are dissociated and do not coincide. Why? With modern recording techniques, why are the two so seperated?
I'm vaguely disquieted sometimes by the casual handling of people's bones and the way that they are often treated with less respect than, say, a nice piece of Beaker pottery...

Payeur I was really alarmed by Phil's reaction (don't get me wrong, I love the guy!) in one of the recent episodes… I'm not sure which one because I'm binge watching and have seen so many, but I think it was season seven. They found a body, and he kept laughing - I'm going to give him benefit of the doubt and to put it down to anxious laughter because the wound on the body was truly brutal.
Anyone else spend a minute or two wondering how many hapless worshippers were killed by falling "roof bosses"? Those things looked big enough to fell an elephant.
