When Jaguar boss, William Lyons confirmed the purchase of Daimler, some questioned the decision, but it turned out to be an ideal pairing; Daimler’s 2.5-litre aluminium V8 was paired with the Jaguar Mk2 saloon to create the 250 V8, a gentleman thug of a car with a lovely V8 burble and the luxury and comfort associated with a Jaguar. Upmarket interior trimmings and subtle styling tweaks in the form of the iconic ‘crinkly’ grille and number plate plinth created an entirely new flavour for the much-loved Jag. What’s it like to drive this rare British muscle car today? Phil found out!

My dad had a V8 250 Manual - I was 12 at the time but loved the car, though it did have a few gremlins and rust ! I think towards the end of the production they ditched the V8 engine, not because it wasnt good, but because it was expensive to make.

years ago I worked with a man whose wife worked for the Jaguar dealer in Melbourne. Her company car was Daimler 250 that had a Mercedes Benz engine in it. It was special collaboration between the two "Daimlers". I haven't been able to find out where it is hiding these days. Her replacement company car was an XJC 5.3.

My mate Brian has owned one of these since I first knew him, in 1974, when he also had a Series 1 XJ6. He sold that in favour of a Series 3, which he still drives today. All his best cars have been automatics, although he did once have a knockabout daily manual gearbox car, the make of which escapes me. He wouldn't like my polybushed and rigid engine mounted Peugeot TD !

Had a 1963 model, bought in 1968 second hand with 35000 miles on the clock. The handbook stated that it was supposedly to be run on 3 star petrol but at 50k it required a decoke. (For younger readers that meant taking the heads off and getting rid of the carbon build-up.) The mechanic who did it luckily gave me a fixed price before starting the job which ended up taking him a full week. (I can't imagine what his family lived on that week but it wouldn't have included steak!) The thing was though, he reckoned that that was the second time it had been done.
In some respects it was a nice car but I got rid of it in 1972 when the doors were showing signs of significant rot. For me, another case of nostalgia being best left in the past!

Thanks for profiling the 250 V8, Phil Weeden! For years, I dismissed it as badge-engineered in the worst sense (minor styling differentiations from, in this situation, the Mark II Jaguar). But in learning more about these cars in the past few years, "badge engineering" simply doesn't apply here because its guts are where the reall engineering is present, and you and other reviewers consistently report, the BSA-engineered V8 and automatic simply make it a more genteel, gentlemanly car. Learning all this about the car has made me a bigger fan of the 250 V8 than the Mark II. Obviously, Jaguar is more world famous, and here in the US, any one of the few people owning a Daimler must frequently have to correct inquisitive onlookers that it is not a Mercedes product. Such a beautiful, beautiful car outside and in! (Incidentally, the Morse "Jaguar" was really a Daimler V8)

If looked after properly the XJ straight 6 will go forever. You need to remember that even though it was designed a year or two after the second world war, i.e. a bloody long time ago. It is one of the best pieces of engineering ever conceived. (in my obviously biased and not very humble opinion.) It was designed in the days when engines were designed to "use" oil. It needs checking and topping up regularly and failure to do so is the root of nearly all the issues, The harder you drive it the more oil it will bun, but keep it topped up and it will rarely let you down.

Nice video, thanks. The problem with the Daimler V8 really was the lack of power, they always sound like they are working hard just to keep up. If it had been a 3.5 litre or perhaps 4.0 litre, it would have been so much better and very likely wouldn't have been any more expensive to run, the engine was just too small for the size of the car.

Subtle muscle? I had a pale blue 68 thin bumper example. I wouldn't describe it as muscle though . A lovely smooth engine, yes, once you get them on eight cylinders, but muscle? I don't think so, especially compared to a 69 valiant 7.3 litre I had in Australia in the early 80s, that was a real tyre shredder. Now that was muscle, sadly only about 8mpg though!

Great car but a well tuned straight six running 3 carbs on the overun is a noise modern cars just cant do.Snapping and crackling like a angry beast .Having driven one all I did was keep dropping down a gear and the magic happens when you let the clutch out.The engine and modded exhaust in my case just made the most glorious sound.Put your foot back down and let it come back off the cams and it went like the proverbial of a shovel. No wonder the straight sixes were so revered by banger racers.

Muscle car it is NOT! The Daimler 2.5 V8 was a sweet little engine and was mated to the new Borg Warner Type 35 transmission which dulled its performance even more. I demonstrated the car at the 1962 Earls Court Motor Show where the Daimler Distributors were happy to have a new model to sell to their client base. Its 0-60 time was some 6 seconds slower than the Jaguar 3.8 version and thus it felt very lethargic in comparsion with its Jaguar stable mates. Regards JA Jaguar Experimental Department 1962-66

I drove two of these cars every day in the early to mid 1980s. I found them both to be an unparalleled combination of flaccid performance and excessive petrol consumption. The acceleration figures quoted are always those from the very early 4.55 ratio differential cars, and the top speed from the later 4.27, both at the expense of massive over-revving. I then had a 2.4 Mark 2 Jaguar, again, an everyday user, and found that to be a better car in every respect. The Jaguar was a manual with overdrive, which helped a lot. I think that the Daimler must have been a far better car with a manual gearbox, preferably with overdrive. Then, and only then, could it claim to be quicker than even a 2.4 litre Mark 2 Jaguar. The Daimler is just fine for a burble around the country roads, but never expect anything like electrifying performance from it. It's just not that kind of car.
