Many teachers have said that one of the biggest reasons they’re leaving en masse is parental apathy. Parents aren’t trying to raise their children anymore. So I’m not surprised that they’re clutching their pearls and suing instead of actually implementing discipline in their kids’ video game consumption.

Ok but this. Not a teacher but an OT with the schools. We literally have this mom who has sued the district because she feels that we are not meeting her kids needs because he doesn't feel like going to school and (yes this actually happened) wanted the school to PAY her child for going because money motivats him. Seriously the audacity of some of these parents is just outrageous.

In the old days kids used to get on their bikes and ride out all day and come home when it was dark. Their parent had no idea when the hell they were doing and they basically raised themselves. Now they sit in front of the computer all day and basically raise themselves. There have always been tied, exhausted, overwhelmed, overworked, depressed and lazy parents it just looks different now.

From the perspective of a single father who has been gaming religiously since Commodore 64, I have to say, that Fortnite lawsuit may be one of the most insane things I’ve heard in a while. Also as someone who has been working with children for over 10 years, it just reinforces my belief that parents are refusing to raise their children. They get raised by teachers or professor ipad. Or in the worst cases they get raised by the streets. Tragic!!

There's a lot to this though. I mean, for one games now are a fuckton more addictive with added pressure on IAPs and focus on instant gratification. Long gone are the tough-as-shit games we grew up on. The lawsuit is kinda ridiculous, yeah, but at the same time something needs to be done as far as the gross direction that games are going.
The other issue is how fucking stupid other people are when it comes to letting your kids have some freedom outside. Like, look at that one mom who had CPS called on her because she let her kid walk home from school.

the parents are neglectful, full stop. They may have had a good reason at the time (newborn, busy at work, money issues etc.) - but that is what it boils down to.
They are happy their child is doing something and perhaps not being super loud and they know where the kid is, but by the time they pay attention enough to see the issues it is too late and they have lost too much authority/confidence in their role as a parent. Maybe if it can reasonably proven that a person (teen or adult) is actively making harmful content for the purpose of gaining followers then a ban could be appropriate, but I'm also not a fan of the way social media censorship is going. If someone wants to talk about their own struggle with eating disorders or mental health they should be able to. On the Fortnite topic, something people usually miss is that gaming addiction is often a symptom of issues in other areas of their life. If parents just ban games without actually talking to and understanding their child, it can lead to other or worse coping mechanisms.
I would have been classified as addicted to games during my teens, but it was to cope with a culmination of bullying, undiagnosed autism and gender identity issues. When my parents tried to limit and take away my gaming and music usage, I turned to self harm and ended up being hosiplised. Once I was able to leave school and follow my special interests, my gaming usage lessened over time.
So yes, games are optimized to make the player spend as much time and money on them as possible, but first ask why the person is playing video games and identify if there is a core need that the gaming is fulfilling, then you can work together to have those needs met in other healthy ways.

Flashbacks to my teens, my mom telling the teacher that I'm addicted, them advising not letting me play, ending up in me being all alone in my room, with my cat, focused on my parents fighting behind the door all the time. Drunk father, neurotic mother.
Mm yes, those games that taught me how to interact with people, helped me learn English and where my social anxiety didn't matter as much, oh and of course friends online who made it possible.
Just please, pay attention to your children. They become what you invest in them

    • @Nomusicincluded
      @Nomusicincluded 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@onceuponamelody Well there is a reason why we don't tend to serve alcohol to children. Games have become more and more addictive. I don't remember being addicted to the first civ games, or railroad tycoon, there was no dopamine/adrenaline hit without achieving something in the game... and even then it was rare. Now, you finish a match and get a random drop or you end up in a 1v1 and you get both of those on a repetitive cycle.
Yes some blame goes to the parents, but that doesn't mean that giving a battle royale fps(even cartoony) a PEGI 12 rating is acceptable.
We warn parents on television, through PSAs, at school meetings, etc... about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, gambling, yadda yadda, but we (as generations growing up with the internet and gaming) don't realise that not everyone is aware of how gaming has changed and how addictive it has truly become.

While I agree that parents ultimately have the power to limit a child's access to video games. I think the lawsuit is necessary because the design of video games have taken a very bad turn these past few years.
More and more games are introducing daily quests and time gated events that encourage logging in every day with very stringent tasks to get free items.
So yes, a parent should limit their child's gaming, but game companies are getting away with designing games that are more attention demanding and punish kids who don't give that attention with the fear of missing out.
Imagine everyone at school talking about how they got the latest skin, but your child feeling left out because they don't. Gaming is more widespread now and part of the child's social life.
Game companies should be held accountable for these deliberate design decisions that instill these daily login habits (and by extension mental habitual training) on kids.

Sorry, but the fact is if the lawyers in this case do their research it is an easy win. This is a huge issue with the AAA game industry in general these days especially when they push towards mobile gimmicks like in game store, in game currency and loot boxes. It encourages players, child teen and adult, to grind constantly to earn rewards or to spend a little more to try and get that "winning" loot box. The fact is that EA, Activision both have their own patens for manipulative mechanics like pairing new players with experienced/whales to encourage them to buy the cool shit, or a sliding difficulty scale based on in-game store spending. Yes, they exist. Yes they were legally patented and can be introduced into a game. Sueing Epic will likely fail, but its a good first step because the AAA companies are just getting worse.
Bottom line: Its not just fortnite but AAA in general working to monetize and hook people sunk cost fallacy. Its blizzard and not epic, I wont be surprised to see Diablo 4 using a lot of things from Immoral just at lower costs and more "F2P" friendly mechanics to keep people grinding, and eventually buying more shit. Gaming addiction is bullshit, but the methods companies are using are exploitive as fuck.

I have noticed this in a way. And it means you have to be really good at managing your own feelings. I see a video is turning sad and I don’t have the capacity for it- I scroll past. It usually only makes a few times and then TikTok gets that I’m looking for something else today

But there's plenty of puppies and inspiration on TikTok. The algorithm follows content that you watch, not how you feel. If your a half decent parent it wont take you two entire years to realize your kid is spending thousand of hours and withdrawing from life playing a game and you would take action. Not wait until the kid is ruined and its gotten so bad you decide to sue. These parents are fully responsible for allowing their kids to go unmonitored. After hearing the excuses the parents cameup with i can guarantee the parents are no better than the kids. The parents probably spent all night watching tv or god knows what allowing the computer to babysit the kids.

Unfortunately, there's a big misunderstanding happening with the news on this. The breakthrough was in understanding fusion reactions for nuclear weapons research, not the energy grid. NIF the facility who had the breakthrough was not designed to research self sustaining fusion reactions for commercial energy use. They were funded to study fusion reactions within nuclear warheads.
The professor Phil interviewed tried to downplay the news hyberbole over this but even he didn't go far enough. This result does very little to move the needle on commercial fusion energy. My main problem with the whole fortnite thing is the classic bad parent behaviour of shifting responsibility. The whole "If only I was informed about the negatives of this thing I let my children do." is just them admitting they had no idea and didn't even try to understand what their kids were spending so much time doing. Isn't it a part of a parents job to inform themselves about what their kid is doing?!
People should know by now that pretty much everything is designed to use your time, just as much as your money, as currency. This includes children, it is the parents responsibility and if they are failing on that front they are neglecting a pretty important part of parenting.

My thoughts echo Phil's. I empathize with the parents going through this, but "not knowing the potential consequences" just isn't a sufficient excuse for me. My kids are really young, and there are a million things out there and more that could seriously harm my child, and no one warning me before I use each one. Educating myself and exercising discernment are difficult but vital parts of my job as a parent. With everything I do, I need to consider not just their current health, but their future potential.
"This object on the floor is roughly the size and shape of a child's trachea. I should probably move that."
"My infant wants to play with a receipt. I should do a 10 second google search on my phone to see if there is any- Whoaa, better keep thermal receipts far away from my kids' mouths."
"Making dinner would be a lot easier if I could just pop on a 20 minute tv show for my toddler from time to time, but I don't want to take a shortcut now that could negatively impact my kid's whole future. Let's see what the empirical data has to say about screen effects on brain development and behavior in toddlers. Oh look at that, shows with less saturated colours and fewer cuts are better for development, seating my kid further from the screen is better for attention regulation, Sesame Street and Mr Rogers are associated with better linguistic development and fewer negative externalizing behaviours even years later, and the best way to circumvent the negative effects of screen time is to be intentional about working on developmental tasks when the TV isn't on? Let's do that."
With the availability of hordes of information at our fingertips and in our pockets, I think there are fewer excuses than ever before to expose your child to make uninformed parenting decisions. Put a more positive way, we know more about raising healthy children now than ever before, and we don't need to go through parenthood feeling like we are blindly flailing and making it up as we go. My parents used to tell me that parenting is just winging it, because there is no manual or guide for best-practice when raising a kid. That just isn't true now (I also don't think it was true then. Plenty of people sold books on raising kids. It was perhaps just less convenient and less evidence-based.)

It feels like society has become so techy that taking away a child's device or limiting access to certain things like TH-cam or video games can feel like being a terrible parent. It's an odd feeling. I grew up without and with the tech, and feel like I'm doing the right thing by taking it away at times, but also feel terrible because it's causing emotional/mental stress in the now for my child. Technology itself has become addictive without the warning.

    • @MiRRorKagami
      @MiRRorKagami 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I totally understand. Kids nowadays are growing up with technology that's more and more accessible and present in their daily life and it's hard to know where to draw the line. I'd say technology should help and not hinder. It should make things more convenient. A child can use a device to learn, to socialize, but it can't replace a parent. If parents give their kids devices to keep them quiet instead of playing with the child, teaching the child, or giving them meaningful attention, that's where I feel it becomes an issue. Older children should have reasonable content and time restrictions. I also think we should emphasize media literacy in our children's education so they can protect themselves online and learn to be more careful about what "facts" or "news" they see.

I used to have social media when I was a teenager but i got rid of everything when I turned 21 except TH-cam after I started noticing how people are just nose deep in their own world. People don't even know how to hold conversation or keep one going because they are distracted and if you do people get annoyed if you even try. People drive while on social media, it sets unrealistic standards and in my opinion a lot of these companies are shady and I don't want any part of it. I noticed when I quit my mental health and concentration increased I'm not on my phone 24/7 and I just feel more content with life.

I think another type of reactor we should be talking about is an accelerator driven reactor. The first one is being built in Belgium, and if it works, we can have nuclear fission without the danger of reactor meltdowns and with less waste. Over the years I've come to realize that gaming and entertainment in general can become addictive, and like drugs and gambling, negatively impact people's lives. Therefore, it's up to us parents to actually be parents and teach our kids about the pitfalls of these vices. Also recognizing the mental health struggles that help to push people into using those mediums to self medicate.

I know if I was playing games way too much etc my parents would rip me a new one (figuretively) so the fact that they are suing the company instead of doing something like limit the amount of time the kids plays, or even disciplining them is sad/ not a shocker. They can do more things instead of this that actually work. Phil himself gave a great example, and I applaud his decision with his son. Good on you phil. Phil, I think you did a very good job running over the very basic elements of fusion for us. The main things are that it makes the fuel significantly cheaper and the radiation cross section produces stuff that's a lot less toxic.
That said, regardless of affordable fusions presence, we still have a lot of upgrades to do both to the grid and to transit infrastructure in general. Even if we can produce the electricity cheap and safe, we still need massive changes to the grids. The primary obstacle isn't cheap fusion, it's -carbon baron lobbying- an unwillingness to commit and pay for the massive changes. We should start getting the grid ready 'now', and just hook up the fusion plants later, then it'll still be ready if it ever plops out, but it's not ever going to be a cheap fix, might as well get started now.

Simply because even if parents are awful generaly at parenting their kids the lawsuit does have value in what it's trying to go agaisnt, it's not a myth but actual facts that f2p model games (atleast the big one and generaly social platform game or phone games) are using years of research on how to build, moneytize and market games in a way to render them as addicting as possible for people with bad impulse control.
Epic does so especialy well toward younger kids due to their big pockets which allow them to gather all the characters kids love from their toys, shows, movies and books, we've often seen lawsuit in the same genre but they alway targeted singular aspect of the whole addicting nature like loot boxes, season pass, launch dlc and so on while this one goes right to the middle of it in a sense.

At the same time, these studies are a bit disingenuous. There's also studies about "how quickly TikTok shoves you down the alt-right pipeline" that have the same issue. The algorithm shows you videos you will want to see. It is really good at that- arguably better than any other targeted algorithm on the market. So going onto TikTok and saying "look how quickly I found X content!" when you were only interacting with content promoting or similar to that topic is misleading at best. It'd be one thing if only liking videos with hot women and cars led you to Andrew Tate, and is another thing entirely if only videos and PUAs and Ben Shapiro leads you to Andrew Tate.
TikTok's big problem is safety features- too little and you've got ED and Self-Harm content being served to people, too much and creators start complaining about being "shadowbanned" and using words like "unalived." It is far more nuanced than these studies make it out to be, though quite frankly it is unlikely to matter much here in a couple years.

I have a 2-year-old daughter and a two month old daughter, parenting is not easy. The hardest part is the choices, deciding to do this versus that. It's not easy, especially when in every corner of your life you have people telling you how to do it. A small example is we didn't allow our oldest daughter to watch TV. I saw no benefit in it, and I'm happy with that decision. Finally, at age two we introduced TV. After a while of one show a week I noticed a behavior change in her. That's when I had to make another difficult decision, is it the TV causing this or just her getting older? Well the good thing is since I'm the parent I can and did back down on TV time. It seemed to help a bit, it's exactly like you said. You have the chance to take these things away or limit them. But everyone and every child is different. Idk, it's complicated, kids are complicated and no one knows anything about anything and that's my final thoughts... What was the question again?

It however does have merit that it is known fact that such f2p model games use years of research to create the game and implement system to be as addictive as possible and/or make you feel obligated to keep on playing to just get that one limtied time reward or whatnot, you can draw a lot of parallel to the social platform game market and the phone game market which use similar research to create their product.
