    This is why comedy is extremely powerful.
    It's one of those very few things keeping people's head straight through unfiltered presentations.

    • @ShaimingLong
      @ShaimingLong ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Reminds me of the court jester, ready and willing to speak the truth the trusted advisors are afraid to mention.
      Comedy is able to bring up those tough topics that make people uncomfortable, without anywhere near as much tension. It's also why it's a tragedy when comedians get censored.

    • @ShaimingLong
      @ShaimingLong ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @blazed ona kayak It absolutely is a complex position and the cushy-ness of the position does depend on the quality of the person they're serving - as in someone selfish will probably not appreciate a jester's perspective along with being an entertainer, as well as the position of their lord. A small time lord governing over a small portion of land probably wasn't making enough to do more than house and feed their jester, if they decided to have one at all.
      Still, in the more ideal of cases, it's a bizarre position to have existed. Like you said, paid to talk shit directly to the person in charge of your life and in charge of many others and despite getting to run their mouth, their opinion could genuinely make a difference!
      Makes me think we should kind of go back to that system, especially given most elected leaders these days tend to be a joke without a punchline anyway!

    If the WNBA sold as many tickets as the NBA, they most definitely would pay the players the same! This is about business not sexism! I remember back when Rhonda Rousey was the highest paid UFC fighter even over the men! Because she was a bigger draw at the time! Like Bill Burr said”the money listens “!

    • @RanRayu
      @RanRayu ปีที่แล้ว +55

      rhonda also said the same thing in a bunch of interviews as bill did. she was asked what she thought about being paid less than men, in a tone that clearly hoped she would be angry about it, and she said it made perfect sense because she didnt bring in the same viewership and revenue as her male counterparts.

    • @joepiekl
      @joepiekl ปีที่แล้ว +42

      It's also worth mentioning that female sports stars are just as likely to be rewarded (financially) based on their looks. Back in the 2000s, the biggest earning female tennis player was Venus Williams. The second highest earning was Anna Kournakova, who never got further than a semi-final. I was watching an interview the other day with Alisha Lehmann, who is a fairly middling Swiss soccer player in England, who just happens to have over 13 million Instagram followers. And like the example Bill Burr gave, they were acting like they didn't know the reason she has the most followed account of any female soccer player. The answer, of course, is because she's stunningly good-looking and regularly posts sexy pictures on there. And obviously we can blame the patriarchy for this, but the brand deals that these sexy sports women are getting are typically not products aimed at men. They are advertising things to women, and they're choosing the best-looking ones because that's what sells. And importantly, that's what sells to women. You don't get this in men's sports. When you look at the list of top-earning men in sports, you never see someone who is average but gets paid a lot just because he's good looking.

      @J I don't think you can point to the "patriarchy" as to why women are generating more money from the likes of Instagram / TikTok. You could make the case that men being attracted to women is why they do, but that isn't patriarchy, that is the nature of attraction.

The reason for this disparity, is not because one gender plays better than the other, it's the idea that men are just better at sports. It's the inherent sexism that we have been socialized to believe to be true that doesn't allow us to view both as equally entertaining which then drives viewership and fan support. The problem with most 1 to 1 female versions of male sports is that the action of play will never be as good, as fast, as powerful, and, thus, as exciting and worth paying attention to. The ticket sales, stadium commissary sales, viewer share and thus the ad revenue just isn't there - who is going to put unappealing junk in a prime advertising time-slot?
    When amateur middle-aged (or teen-aged) males can dominate peak professional female teams, the case for equal pay is rendered ludicrous: Size, mass, peak strength, speed, and savagery count in most sports. That's just the way it is.
    Burr is funny and rude, but that is how a Jester tells the truth to royals and priests when it is dangerous to tell the truth to such people, and what Burr says is truth.

My "fav" student of all time was a guy who was barely eeking out a D midterm w organic chem being a class he HAD to pass to continue... came in reg for help... got a high B and the next semester got an A... im my case... the women's BBall had the higher attendance record... those women built the new facility. Slacker, directed by Richard Linklater was one of the original "indie" movies to inspire a generation of filmmakers to believe they could make movies without the backing of major studios. That dialogue and creativity rather than special effects and big names could be entertaining. Kevin Smith references Slacker and Linklater all the time as his inspiration to even believe making a movie was possible.

They don’t hit it as far as the men, but they putt like crazy. I agree that it’s more relatable since I hit around the same distances as they do. I'm a former sportswriter who covered the NBA, and part of my job was to cover the WNBA in the summer. What's been lost in this discussion is the fact that the WNBA was supposed to be a way for players, many of whom had overseas gigs, to supplement their income, NOT to be the primary source. That's why the league plays an abbreviated schedule in the summer, when the overseas leagues are in their offseason.

      @@soulward6334 The point I was making (which everyone else seemed to get) was that everyone on the WNBA side of the fence is bitching about the money disparity between their league and the NBA. But the WNBA was never supposed to be the players' main paycheck. It was supposed to be a side gig so they could make a few extra bucks and - for the Americans who had been playing overseas - provide an opportunity to play at home. The WNBA was never intended to equal the NBA in size, scope or size of contracts. And it certainly doesn't come close to matching the quality.

    I think it's been interesting to see how the Women's Super League in England have gone about it with actual investment by established men's clubs. It seems like perhaps the WNBA is a bit of an afterthought where they throw a bit of money their way to avoid being accused of being sexist. In England, it's been a lot more like a concentrated campaign to promote the women's game, bringing broadcasters on board. The results have been good, to the point that top five teams are averaging around 5k, 6k, 7k, 10k and 17k fans per game, and some of the biggest games are getting 80,000 people showing up. Now obviously tickets are cheaper than the men's Premier League, but it's a start, and it's also bringing more girls and women into the game. But most importantly, it's allowed more female players to go professional, whereas five years ago, I believe there was only one fully professional team in the league. So while it is being subsidized, it's being subsidized with a view to making it a profitable and thriving league, rather than out of some sense of obligation. These huge clubs aren't charities, they see the potential for profits in the future.
    And that's what female soccer players in America or Australia should be crying out for. Don't moan about equal pay, moan about lack of investment in your sport to get it to a stage where it can be a viable career for more women.

    • @JLew32
      @JLew32 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don’t know all the details but I disagree somewhat on the lack of investment. The biggest supporters of the wnba is the nba and it’s players. The commissioner for the NBA has done interviews where he’s frustrated over the investment they’re making and yet a lot of women still don’t show up or participate. The nba has spent a lot of money and I think 10+ years trying to build out the wnba to no avail

      > how the Women's Super League in England have gone about it with actual investment by established men's clubs.
      This is what you forget here. There is a fanbase - a rabid fanbase - for clubs in Europe. The football ultras will fucking attend a high-school division valleyball match as long as one of those teams if from THEIR club. Here in Greece there is Panathinaikos in football, basketball, volleyball, you name it ... even BOXING.
      In the USA they do not have that. The LA Lakers and LA Sparks are different. Even in men's sports that's true. The NY Knicks and NY Jets? Totally different. If that was Europe there would have been NY Knicks in football, basketball, volleyball, you name it and noone in their right mind would say "yeah, let's change the club's name".
      Huge cultural difference in sports.

    • @joepiekl
      @joepiekl ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ΤάσοςΚαυσοκαλυβίτης Yes and no. Obviously being part of the men's club, sharing social media, facilities, etc, is a benefit. But it's not true that groups of men who go to the men's games together are then also turning up at the women's game. Perhaps the odd dad bringing his family. But you only need to listen to it on TV to see that there's a completely different demographic turning up to the women's game. Far more women and kids, particularly girls, who only watch the women's game and don't really go to the men's. Part of the reason is that it's so much cheaper. £49 for a men's ticket last time I went. The women's match is £9. If you've got a couple of kids, that difference soon adds up.

    Comedy is one of the best, and easiest, ways to learn and I have found Bill Burr to be an excellent teacher. I like that you analyzed and used reason in your video as opposed to simply reacting to it. I wish to recommend two books, they are related. They are the most recent books I have read that are worth recommending to others. Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds by Michael Lewis. If you are only going to read one probably The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds would be better. I found it an easier read and the interaction between Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in their intellectual investigation of the human mind fascinating. The books help inform us of how and why we make decisions that we do.

    It’s pretty obvious watching the Nunez vs Aldana fight in UFC, why these women are the headline bout. They are top competitors and all the men and women watching were so impressed with their performance and achievement. It’s not that men are sexist, it’s that we can tell when we’re watching greatness and the WNBA is not it. It’s good. They actually work hard on their fundamental skills, plays and strategies which is admirable. I’m not saying WNBA is bad. It’s just not that compelling. If it was sexism you would not be able to headline Nunez vs Aldana in a championship bout.
