  • The Loneliness of the Long Distance Walker is a missing episode in the British comedy series Dad's Army. It was originally transmitted on 15 March 1969. One of the three missing Dad's Army episodes, screenshots and clips of this episode do survive.
    Cast
    Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring
John Le Mesurier as Sergeant Wilson
Clive Dunn as Lance Corporal Jones
    John Laurie as Private Frazer
James Beck as Private Walker (portrayed by Graham Stark in the radio version)
    Arnold Ridley as Private Godfrey
    Ian Lavender as Private Pike
Anthony Sharp as Brigadier (War Office)
    Diana King as Chairwoman
    Patrick Waddington as Brigadier
    Edward Evans as Mr Reed
    Michael Knowles as Captain Cutts
    Synopsis
To his complete surprise, Walker receives his call-up papers. Mainwaring tries his best to get them to reconsider.
    Plot
When Walker is called up, he applies to the Military Service Hardship Committee, who reject him on the grounds that he does not keep books for his business. After Jones' attempts to sabotage his medical test fail, Walker is invalided out because he's allergic to corned beef.
    Notes
This episode is missing from the BBC's television archives after staff wiped the tapes for reuse. Along with "A Stripe for Frazer" and "Under Fire", this is one of three missing Dad's Army episodes.
This was the first appearance of Michael Knowles.
This episode was planned for transmission on 20 January 1969.
It was announced on 9 November 2018 that UKTV Gold had commissioned recreations of the three missing episodes of Dad's Army. These will be broadcast in 2019.

This excellent comedy was first shown 55 years ago, the characters are all so good showing all the personalities we would expect in an old timers army and all played to perfection. A comedy classic ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Definite proof of a perfect comedy is that with just some knowledge about the characters and the audio soundtrack it makes you feel good. These characters (and, of course, their actors) will never be forgotten for as long as their stories are told. I have given my kids, extended family and friends a love for Dad's Army (in the form of the latest DVD Box) so that the next generation is also assured of a good laugh and some of the antics of the boys in the Home Guard.
Being a Belgian, I was rather late to the series (1980) but I can honestly claim that I have seen every episode at least twice and most episodes much, much more often. As an avid wargamer, I often play with the Home Guard and for my 63th birthday, a friend gave me a 3d printed version of Corporal Jones Ford BB van. I (of course) already possessed the Lledo vehicle but this was not to scale and a bit to large. Now, however, my platoon can stop Jerry with the right sized vehicle. Best present ever...

The great thing about audio is that it makes you use your imagination and as a result you can visualise the episode and every little nuance especially between Arthur and John which is often so subtle and brilliant. its most relaxing and the 30 minutes fly by.

@goinghomesomeday1 your right of course but I actually found out later, long after I forgot i made this comment that Beck died suddenly from peritonitis due to a fall he suffered while at a charity event he sponsored to raise money to provide the guide dogs for the blind in between series 5 and 6.. He’s credited with appearances in series 6 because the location filming for that season was completed before he died. I’m from the US and I had limited exposure to British TV and became a fan of Beck Rik Mayll Sean Lock and most recently Paul Ritter and I was gutted by learning they were all dead. Mayall and Lock I knew of before their deaths. Take care my friend
