What a wonderful concerto this is! Typically soul-searching, unmistakably Russian, it surely would enchant audiences were it given the chance to supplant some over-familiar ones (Tchaikovsky, say). The ravishingly beautiful 'adagio' encourages us to recall cherished memories, to reminisce and lose ourselves in them, then the finale returns us to the vital energy of present, pleasant activities. (Great music like this brings out the romantic instinct in me!) Violinist Repin gives a great performance here, incidentally.

Very rhapsodic with an Elgar/Korngold/Conus/Prokofiev/Tchaikovsky feel to it.
Repin sets this benchmark performance as the highest standard possible.
Bravo! Many themes instead of having one main theme with development.
Interesting piece. Repin somehow makes it work and brings it alive.

Очень люблю первую часть - и чувствительную, и суровую в одно и то же время (1938-й год!)
Написан концерт был, разумеется, для Ойстраха - как и практически всё выдающееся для скрипки, что писалось в Союзе в эти годы.
