  • It’s hard to effect change if you don’t know how change happens. For Noel Kinder, former chief sustainability officer at Nike, it took what he describes as a nonlinear career - from service in the Peace Corps to nonprofit to operations in a large corporation - to acquaint himself with strategies that made tangible impact. “I was more effective because of the road I had taken, with all the twists and turns,” he says.
In conversation with Bhavna Sivanand, executive director of UCLA Anderson’s Center for Impact, Kinder explained how his experiences taught him to set and achieve goals within the structure of a Fortune 500 company. He charted an effective sustainability strategy for a major brand by navigating the complexities of regulatory trends, and learning that patience is critical to being a transformative leader. In his words, “You can’t lead if no one wants to follow you.”
