Would you go through a tree the same way if you were planning on repotting the tree next spring from a nursery pot into a bonsai pot?

It depends on what stage of development the tree is currently is in. If main branches are developed and now working on ramifications or fine development totally the way to go. Now if the development is still in initial style and branches need to thicken up, I would let them extend then cut back in later fall.
