Japanese robot anime almost (exception with the Yusha series) never deviated from the original plot set by Mitsuhide Yokoyama and the Tetsujin series. That it was up to humans who had control of the robot to decide whether it will be the force of good or evil
Getter and Manzinger changed it tho. They became pilots of the gian mecha. Getter so much that it was the first combining and transforming robot. Diaclone was influenced by Getter. Go and Ken ushered in Mecha as we know it today.
