    As an Austrian I wouldn’t call the Hofburg a seat of power. While the Bundeskanzleramt and Bundespräsidentenamt are there (offices of the chancellor and largely ceremonial president of the republic of Austria) they occupy only a small part of the buildings. Most of it is now taken up by museums and the national library of Austria (great place to study!).
    Most Austrians would argue that the seat of Austrian power is on the opposite side of the Ringstraße in the Austrian Parlament (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_Parliament_Building), just a short walk through the unbuild mirror image of the neue Burg, which was turned into a public rose garden.
    While the Austrian Parlament has set up a temporary residence on Heldenplatz during renovations of the Parlament (the ceiling was about to cave in, and while most Austrians would wish that on our politicians, new elections would be too much of a hassle).
    Also the Kunsthistorische Museum has a mirror image in the Naturhistorische Museum, one Museum for art, and one for the sciences of the time.

    Something always fascinated me about the Hapsburgs- especially the final years. On old autocratic monarch. A crown prince that committed suicide. A reforming Archduke being assassinated. An ineffective general that bungled the war. And the heir to the empire trying to betray the German kaiser but ended up being his puppet instead. It sounds like something out of daytime television.

    Suggestion for a future video. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), is a system of dams along the Tennessee River in the Southeastern US. If I’m remembering my history correctly it was the largest dam system in the world at the time of its construction. At the time no system of dams had ever been constructed to achieve the following three tasks simultaneously.
    1 flood control
    2 year around navigation
    3 electric generation
    TVA accomplished all three.

    • @chitramitra6373
      @chitramitra6373 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the TVA is truly a marvel, I remember reading that it’s so efficient, it pays for itself, (gets no tax money), and even issues its own bonds (AAA-Rated). Eric Rauchway wrote a great book recently, (Why The New Deal Matters). An entire chapter is devoted to the origins of the TVA). Vulture Capitalists keep trying to get the government to privatize it, but luckily we've been able to hold them off so far.

    The Neue Burg is built in a very Viennese tradition. It was supposed to have two wings - but they ran out of money and skipped one wing. Take a look at Stephansdom. It was supposed to have two towers, but they ran out of money and skipped one tower. Oh, and the Parliament? It was supposed to have all pillars guilded with gold, but guess what happened? You are right, only four pillars are guilded. With the Opera house, they actually had the money to finish it, but missed the coordination with the construction work outside. It looks at it has "sunken down" in the street. The Kaiser mentioned it, and the architect promptly killed himself.

    As a matter of fact, I am Austrian, and I am pretty sure, the dynasty refers to themselves as Habsburg. No idea, where you got the P from. Otherwise interesting video!

    Nazis did not undermine Austrian "democracy". When they took over, we already had a fascist dictatorship of our own.

    Many thanks for shining some light in the Hofburg. It is too often overlooked as it doesn´t have the splendor of Versailles, lacks the luster of a royal family like the Buckingham Palace or is not as iconic as Neuschwanstein.

    Housing the parliament for a few years while the original building is being renovated does NOT make the Hofburg the Seat of Government.
