- Jeff and Sarah of "History Hunters" check out Jamestown, California where they find the grave of Donner Party survivor Leanna Donner App. They also go to her burned out house where she died in 1930.

That's Margaret Reed in the photo with her husband, James. Patty was their 8-year-old daughter who stayed behind to look after her 3-year-old brother, Thomas. Patty and Thomas would be in one of the later rescue parties. Her mother and other siblings would go with the first rescue party. Upon leaving, Patty made a very sad and brave comment to her mother, "If you never see me again, do the best that you can." That was Eliza Donner in the photo with her sister and adoptive mother.
You are right. I was going to correct this myself.
The Reeds ended up settling in San Jose. If they came to San Jose today they couldn't stay in San Jose with the million dollar houses and they would have to move on. Probably out of state.
How could you leave your kids
Unless we are in some one else shoes one can never say what one will do just to see another day. It was horrible for her to endure that long trip..its hard today in a car let alone 6 months in route with a wagons in tow. She's has piece since then.. God love them all who endured that trip.

My husband and I continue to watch your videos, even those you created 3 years ago. I guess you could say we came "late to the party" and have been watching these videos for less than a year. I imagine we will get caught up with your history lessons at some point. So, informative and love the history and research you put behind every video. Just a little note: Sarah said she thought this was boring??? Awwwww, Sarah, come on. This man is actually one of the great Educators/Historians/Entertainers of all time. Please give your support to your man. We followers DON'T want him discouraged so he can keep moving forward with his very important work. Nothing boring about any of his videos so far! New to the channel and love history. Only complaint is the music drowns out the commentary. But you do an amazing job covering then history.

As a resident of Jamestown, I actually live just two streets down, The Donner/App Farmhouse has always been a favorite of mine! Mostly the rich history that comes along with it but also the beauty of the house. I have a close friend who grew up in that house. His family rented it for many years before it was abandoned. He has said to me, “The many stories I could tell you!”
I was heartbroken when I heard of the fire in January 2019 and I’m even more sad to report that as of the last week of January 2023, this once beautiful home is no longer standing. All that remains is the fireplace and chimney. My 2 young boys and I watched it for about a week being slowly torn down. I’m shocked and apart of me is not, as it is a sad eye sore being so loved and cherished by many to see it in that terrible state, plus being the first thing you see as you come into Jamestown.
May the House, The Donner/App Family and all that goes with it, Rest In Peace.
Thanks for the comment, Rachael! Sad to hear the house came down. I was expecting that to happen. Do they plan to build another house on the property or did they remove it to prevent the squatters from living in there?
@@jbenziggyit was burned down by some careless/arsonist hobos. Likely drunk and/or high on drugs. The county then forced the owner to tear it the rest of the way down.
Unfortunately homelessness is a huge problem here and the County has done fuck all to address it. They were quick as hell to fine the property owner tho.
I had a co worker , who was related to one of the Donner Party survivors. Her family refused to give her information about how they ended up in California. She was always was told the family came from back east by wagon train, but no other details. She visited the Donner Museum and recognized the name of one of her relatives that was listed in a log of the Party members. She asked the older family members , if it was true. They finally admitted that yes , their family member was one of the Survivors
That's something to be proud of actually but because of the stigma of cannibalism a lot of people are ashamed to be related to the Donner party members!
My coworker would volunteer to work at the Museum. She did additional research and wanted to share her family's story with others.

did some digging on the donner party trail got some bottles and some silverware and dishes our friend had property there . Love all the history went to black barts and uncle toms cabin live in the little town of West point now.Also lived in Morada not to far from pollardiville. Good time great chicken. Keepupthe great work
Those artifacts belong in the Donner State Park Museum, Truckee, CA.
Thanks for sharing this. George Donner is my 5th great uncle and it will be nice to go pay respects to his daughter.
I came across some Donners in the Milton, Calif. cemetery on Saturday. Could they be related?
Thanks guys for a great video! I recently visited that cemetery and took pictures and one was the App grave. I thought they'd be very popular now that we are all driven by apps on our electronic devices! The house that you found of hers is sad to see coming into Jamestown on the left hand side of 108. My wife worked with a gal that rented the house back in the day and after moving out it sadly fell into disrepair and the homeless took over and I understand that's how it caught on fire with people trying to keep warm inside. We live in Jamestown and I remember that fire, I always liked driving by the home and thinking about the history behind it but never knew it until now, thanks for all your research!
I was amazed how many families that came here in the 1849 period by sail or overland, are still here in Sonora-Jamestown=Groveland . So full of history. Great video. I worked with an App relative - Donner Party yep. Sad that the old house burned, it was only after that thatI found out how historical it was. Too bad it wasn't made a historic site, its right across the road from Hurst Ranch Feed Store..which has a movie related Railroad Station prop.

Nice video about Leanna App. From what I've read, Leanna Donner App left the camps of the snowbound emigrants with the First Relief Party on February 22, 1847. There is no evidence that sisters Leanna and Elitha Donner, ate human flesh while stranded in the Sierra Nevada. However, her three younger sisters apparently did - starting almost right after the First Relief Party headed back towards Sutters Fort. They simply ran out of food, which at that point consisted rendered bones, and boiled cow hides. Thanks again for your history video.

This is the family of my pastors wife. Leanna was the great grandmother of our pastors wife.
I was in CA ( Ft. Ord ) for 3 years and so deeply regret that history had not yet become an interest of mine at my young age. I look at these historic travel videos and quite often go "Hey I know where that is" or " dang , I was there and had no idea of the historical significance right there where I was". Someday I will be back to explore the west. For some odd reason I feel somewhat connected to that part of the country. Maybe with enough exploration and winding up in the right spot at the right time, I will fulfill and satisfy my longing to belong to a long ago lost location. Nice video , enjoyed your tour. From about 2006 till about 2010 I'm still in the Jamestown area . The owner was Lonnie ashlock he flipped his quad on his ranch down in Waterford and was paralyzed, his partner took over his investments .

In 1974, when I was a History Major at Fresno State, I read the book on the Donner Party. Only a few of the survivors participated in cannibalisms. Most the survivors did not. I do not remember about whether she did or not.
I spent a lot of time in Jamestown growing up because my Aunt Marian & Uncle Charles lived there & owned a good year auto shop in town
I didnt think it was boring.

There is a PBS Reno documentary that pieces together the diaries that were kept. There's a lot of insight into their mental health and various decisions that were made, desperate attempts to get help and the feuds that fueled division early on during the blizzards. You might be able to find it if you're interested.

Lived in Mt. Ranch, CA. for years, just up the road from San Andreas. Angels Camp wasn't far off either. Fun times at Black Bart Days and the Frog Jump. I had a claim there and did some placier mining.
Went back about three years ago. It was sad.
The Black Bart Inn was a shell of it's
former self. The bar and restaurant were closed. Goonies Saloon was gone too.
The girl that worked at the Black Bart Inn told me Mt. Ranch was being taken over by marijuana growers and the kinds of unwanted problems they bring plus other drug dealers moving in. Just sad for an historic area like that to be turned into a drug dealers haven.

you might also be interested in another historical site just 26 miles north of Truckee, Calif. It's Webber Lake which until recently was privately owned by the Johnson family, friends of my parents. Webber Lake was the site of an 1860 stage coach stop. As a kid my family summered there and we lived in some of the old cabins built in 1860. We'd spend time playing on old stage coaches half buried in the ground or afternoons in what was once the saloon. Vern Johnson used to love showing us the bullet holes in the walls. Now that a Trust owns the lake and the buildings they are being restored. I'm hoping that now that it is open to the public it will not be ruined.

The photograph of "Mrs. Brunner" at 5:06 has been labelled Tamzine* Donner in other places. (Spellings of names seem to vary across publications. This is the first spelling of her name I encountered.)
The winter 1846-1847 was a long one, thankfully we had our friends for dinner.

I cannot believe that Sarah said that anything pertaining to that Donner party is boring! It is sad and whenever I have visited the site I become very sad just imagining how those people survived. Cannibalism is morally wrong but survival is very strong emotion. I cannot and will not condemn. But boring? Never!!! You need to get a new travel companion.
It’s not something you would chose to do, but given the circumstances eating another human being if you are starving, seems the obvious thing to do I would hope that if I were in that situation and died I would hope someone would eat me if it saved a persons life no different to being a doner of your kidney, heart etc. She had no reason to be ashamed and I hope she was told that.
Marysville California is named after Mary Donner one of the Donner family members.

Go to guernsey, WY. Look for the wagon trails cut in to the sand stone and register cliff. It has names etched in the cliff face.

409rommel not sure I would be able to get Sarah back there but I think we are going to hit other places in that area. The fire was suspicious as there were bums hanging out in it before the fire.

I just found your channel and I think it's amazing and so interesting! You do a great job! So sorry that your wife is so unappreciative of what you do and the amount of effort you put into it to preserve history for people who would otherwise not ever get to see it or know about it. I have watched several of your videos now and it seems she looks completely miserable on your journeys. So sad! My family would think it was an amazing adventure.
Sarah actually is very supportive and loves getting out to explore. She often cannot see what I see in my mind’s eye when visiting these locations. Keep in mind you only see what is edited. There are a lot of videos where she shows her enthusiasm. At times she is struggling with physical ailments that we don’t or haven’t made public. Thanks for finding us.

were thr survivors given a hard time later on after the truth became known. treated very badly , ostracised, ? i can only imagine. some lived on until the 1930, another 1957. sad their stories werent documented. Or maybe no one wanted to know or didnt bother? these pioneer travellers were heroes in my book

Donner story is so sad I can see why Mrs App was so private
Sonora Mining owned the house until the late '90s and rented it out. There was a sump under the house that skunks would fall into and drown. Then someone would have to crawl under the house and fish the decomposing carcass out. It would take weeks to get rid of the smell. After the County took over the house it sat empty for the last 20 years.
When the mine would set off explosions, the house would get bombed with good sized rocks!

Virgo Hottie Mary Couvilad, a donner party survivor who our town is named after, she is buried in the catholic historic cemetery. Closed to the public. The rest of her family, is buried in the historic Marysville cemetery, very accessible to go to and visit, when ever you come back and visit. Also if you drive on the historic Highway 49, nearby grass Valley, there’s a bunch of old gold rush sites off the highway. Very beautiful fun drive going up to Downieville.

Not to make light of such a horrific event that took place in history, BUT!!! I wonder if anyone has thought of creating a Donner APP APP? Enter a little info on the person you're hiking with and viola... Cuisine options! Bill would go good broiled for one hour at 350. Served with hollandaise sauce, Caesar Salad, a light Sauvignon Blanc! And of course a Lemon Meringue Pie for desert!
Such a sad shame that this historic house caught fire! I hope it wasn't due to transients spending the night there. I've heard of fires usually because someone falls asleep while smoking.
I think it was set by a homeless person or persons. We didn't have a homeless problem in California when I was growing up in the 1970s or even into the 1980s. What happened? Meth? What do you think?
