      @DeeperThanMyThoughts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      The way I see it is" your own" people are those who you not only share or learn to share your experiences with you, but those who also elevate and have a deep affection and respect for you. Black people are just people like anyone else. We may share similar racial experiences, but it doesn't mean we share the same outlooks and beliefs. Your own people is whoever you connect with.

    • @tenwaystowearit
      @tenwaystowearit 6 ปีที่แล้ว +144

      DeeperThanMyThoughts I actually just meant Black people. It wasn’t a possessive term. I just meant people within my race.

    • @DeeperThanMyThoughts
      @DeeperThanMyThoughts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Ten Ways To Wear It I understand what you're saying, what I was trying to convey is this belief system that I often hear from black people (I am black to btw so I understand) . The expectations that we have of each other just because we share a similar skin tone, but not necessarily the same experiences.
      Black people are not a homogenous group who all think the same, we don't! I understand the hurt and disappointment but that's because your expectations are founded in a belief system that skin colour overrides individual and cultural behaviours. In countries where dark skin is coveted this is not even a talking point. In westernized countries where white supremacy is prevalent, the preference for lighter skin is dominant, hence why the catch all use of the term "black people" is too loaded as it doesn't take cultural thinking into account.

    • @Njoofene
      @Njoofene 6 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Totally agree with DeeperThanyThoughts. In my tribe (the Seereer), dark skin is elevated. Hence a common phrase "I want a wife as dark as charcoal." Jet Black skin is associated with nobility, purity and Godliness.

      No, all art is different and comes in different forms, and I feel as if you're a makeup/hair artist you should be able to work with all types of skin tones and hair, because not everyone has the same skin tone. Some is harder to master than others because you have to mix and match makeup. Also with hair textures you shouldn't be teaching 1 certain type of hair texture in a hair stylist school you should be teaching ALL textures of hair and the same goes for makeup.

Most common questions I get are "Do you have my shade?", "Should I bring my own foundation?", "Have you done a black girl before?", "Can you do asian eyes?" etc. The sad part is I know why they are asking me that.

      I have always said this. At times I wondered if there were separate cosmetology schools for white and black hair. All the black salons in my area can do ANY hair type. The white salons don't seem to know what to do with black hair. So are there separate schools or do they just not teach this stuff? My last experience at a white salon they wet my already straightened hair so they could trim it( they were shocked it started to frizz). I don't think its up to me to educate them, they are supposed to be professional.

      @@whatyalldoing7012 What's not to be envious of is the vast majority of people in the world don't find them attractive. Just because the vast majority of people don 't find dark skin and kinky hair attractive does NOT mean: 1) they are envious of these women and, 2) these women are inherently unattractive. It just means society likes what it likes and complaining won't change it.

      Life's unfair. People of all cultures for all times find SOMETHING to discriminate on. Always have, always will. Skin color discrimination isn't any better or worse than discrimination based upon religion, gender, height, affluence, etc.

      I don't think so that this is about discrimination of different colours skin... This is business... unfortunately white woman are really really beautiful woman and like in the sport are the best people, in beauty are the most pretty people... But I swear to god, really I swear to god I will answer to all black models in the world why is like this, if they will answer me, why black guys want white girls?! Not just want, because me like a white guy I would nevere had any trouble to have something with pretty black girl, but basically it's not what white guys wish.... But so many black guys around me want to have white wife or girlfriend... Why?! If you gonna answer me on this I swear to god I will answer to you why it's like this and maybe when you will answer me on it you will answer to yourselves aswell...

I wasn't actually shopping for myself I was shopping for someone else for a birthday gift.

      It's really good that you have a lot of self worth. However you add nothing to the [epidemic] of the 10 billion dollars industries (weaves, skin bleaching, rhinoplasty) that pray on black self-hate. Blanket statements like "We don't envy other people" are not only lies, but contradict present facts and numbers.

    • @xella3388
      @xella3388 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Denying hateful rhetoric is a step towards liberation from institutionalized self-hate, and it doesn't matter what ethnic group you belong to, it's inflicted on everyone. Many non-blacks sink billions into cosmetic procedures, getting lip fillers, hair-thickening plugs and extensions, breast, thigh and buttock implants to achieve the archetypal look most associate with black and brown women. Asian markets: facial reconstructions and skin treatments. Brazillian markets: rhinoplasty and augmentation. It might not be broadcast as relentlessly in your country, but "black self-hate" is a global sensation that exists everywhere and reaches into every insecurity one might have, regardless of ethnicity. The cosmetic and fashion industry are as much to blame for warping the cultural nuances that help shape our beauty ideals. Expressing pride in the diversities of beauty does more than point at negative facts for the sake of saying they are current facts. It presents an alternative, to deny those facts as permanent reality. To persevere through systemic prejudice and proudly represent the unique beauty you embody sows positivity alongside the seeds of hate.
      That's why there needs to be a Love button for that comment.

      Agree! That's a fact! I lived in Japan for 3 years and Japanese hairstylists who have never even seen a black person before could do my hair because they are trained to be able to handle all hair textures. They also listen when I explain what to do and then I leave happy.
      If that's possible in Japan, it's possible in Paris or Milan, too. They need to step up their game.

      Fashion is highly competitive/political make no mistake and it applies to backstage. Typically an agency is hired for Hair and MUA, the booker decides who gets the jobs or the person in charge picks their staff. They usually hire friends or those that have the power to book them for future jobs. Some MUA's do not have respect for our skin color, so they think it's easy, so you don't need a special talent, training or technique.

These women are expressing their frustrations with the industry and these issues are 100% valid. The world is diverse and clothes should reflect inclusion. The industry has to meet WOC where they are, not the other way around.

Esp. when you go to a go-see and see the shild infront of the door which says "No black, no arabs and no asian models - Thank you!"... when I saw that, the pain wasn't just in my head but it was way deeper cause I see all kind of human being as one and make no differences.     it is really funny, how makeup artists do not know how to do make up on darker skin or hair stylist that doesn't know how to style a textured hair, lack of experience maybe, it so sad that till this day such things keep extending further. they all look beautiful;

      Gossip KoooKie You also have to take into consideration they probably never got practice on these ethnicities. To be very honest as a black person I realize that we kinda like to stick to our own. 😪

      Keisha Stewart I know but that makes sense for example, because I have an olive tone so Anyone can work on it, If they were trained. But for some reason they make me so yellow when I get it professionally done at Mac. Vice versa you feel comfortable with someone who can understand your skin shade better, as they know it. But I totally het ur point
