I remember borrowing this from the school library and the cover creeped me out (it was the original cover and not the one in the thumbnail), but I liked scary stuff as a kid as long as it wasn’t too messed up. Even though I did enjoy the story for what it was, this book also annoyed me with some of its problems too: I don't get why there couldn't have been a fence built to keep Buster out of McCall's garden, I don't get why when Joe was trying to deem his innocence, his father just jumped over what he said and even extended his punishment all because of what Mindy chose to hold on to of what Joe told her--although he said he wanted to EAT the casaba melons, not wreck them. And the final thing I don't get is what the heck are the lawn gnomes getting revenge for????
I think it's revenge to people because they took away the gnomes' reign in the forest - if that part of the story wasn't a lie from Hap and Chip. Second, I'm not sure if there was a fence to keep the dog out of the neighbors garden but Buster found it's own way. And your concern about the father, you know, it's almost a running gag in every Goosebumps story that the parents don't believe a thing of the misery that happen to the protagonists. It's their cold and harsh behavior to make it more scarier for kids. So there's no pedagogical logic in the storytelling.

I honestly don't think there was a fence because Buster kept coming into the yard whenever he pleased, and Mr. McCall never made any attempt to erect a fence to keep him out of the yard. They had to have lived right next door to each other for him to get to that garden so easily like that. The story that Hap and Chip told the kids was just a fake sob story just to get them to the store and have the 600 lawn gnomes there just cause even more mischief after they, I guess, kill Joe, Mindy and Moose. And you're right about the parents: Chicken Chicken had THE worst parental guidance in there ever.
@@johnbakasmoothhotchocolate In my imagination both yards could be also devided botanical with a giant hedge, so the dog could have found a way through it. Also a wooden fence with some gaps could be the solution - or Buster bypassed the border and came through the open front yard entrance of Mr. McCall. I think it's not mentioned in detail as I remember.
@@docholiday2538 I can still talk about the problems it has because I can. And A LOT of the Goosebumps books have problems in them, some much worse than even this one. But more so because it gives misinformation to kids about what dogs could consume if no one who knows better tells them first.

It's a children's book so it's not really supposed to make perfect sense lol. I love finding these from my childhood.
