The puppets were restored in 2005 after they appeared on Antiques Roadshow and are being rented from a collector for the museum. They’re actually the promotional versions rather than the ones used in the special. A good number of other Rankin Bass puppets exist in private collections including an actual screen used Santa and reindeer in Japan.

I had the same questions as you, regarding their sizes. After re-watching the special this year, I believe this is the Rudolph puppet from when he is young and smaller. In the special he becomes bigger and grows antlers. Also, this is the Santa puppet used in the final moments of the film, when he was taking off in his sleigh. That is the only time in the show that you see him wearing this outfit.

Aww! Loved seeing the original puppets from the movie! Also, there’s other Rudolph movies that are cool, like the one short from back in the 1940s. I think Walt Disney did it. Also there’s another movie from 1998. It was an animated one like the 40s one. I remember we had a VHS tape and it messed up the show. You could hardly see it lol. It was an old one. But I still watched it as a little girl. Good thing we have better technology for that nowadays. Otherwise, stuff would be just blurry all the time. That Kermit puppet is cute too. There are a lot of cool puppets there. Well, thanks for sharing! Have a great day!

The main characters were built in different scales (usually 3), remember? This was done to ensure better detail of the puppets during close-up shots. So the reason why Santa looks so large compared to Rudolph is b/c you might be seeing two different scales, side by side.

    Fun fact:
Did you know there was a 1998 2D Rudolph film? It had more music, more star power in the actors (and singer in the form of Clint Black, who sang the song in the opening credits), and had a lot of things changed, added and removed in terms of the lore and even plot (by plot, I mean the villain, and I don't think the Island Of Misfit Toys was in it, neither was Hermie, Bumble or Yukon Cornelius), and while it is pretty low-budget all things considered, it's not that bad of a watch
