    My grandmother and my self starched my children’s shirts and dresses. This kept them clean and kept the baby formula from Staining their outfits.

    Faultless and Niagra are my favorites. My sister taught me the starch trick before I started on my first top and almost every point was on point! She also taught me about the school glue to glue baste the points and seam allowances so they didn't move during stitching which was also a great help with precision.

    Still finding this video really helpful - thanks for such a thorough explanation plus cleaning the iron. And the funnies - tupperware for the small quilts, and having fun while quilting with vodka:)

    Thanks so much for the info! I'm using a planetary fabric to replace my car's headliner and someone suggested to use starch! And I found you! Excellent info! 😊

      Thank you! I'm working on a new one about a quick backing. Hopefully, I'll have it ready to go in a week or so.

    Safety Tip! Put the cloth on the board and rub the iron on the cloth rather than rubbing the cloth on the iron. This will prevent any possibilities of burns.

    I clean the gummy off with a warm iron, press a used dryer sheet.

    Great informaton - thank you! New quilter here - making a flannel crazy quilt for a soon-to-be grandbaby. It will be used and washed, immediately and probably often. Will this eliminate the problem of attracting bugs? At some point, I am hoping the well-loved raggedy quilt might end up in a memory box of some sort and I'd hate to have an issue. ???

      Hi Beverly, Washing will eliminate the problem of attracting bugs with the starch. It washes the starch out and leaves your fabric soft and wonderful again. Congrats on both being a new quilter and on the new grandbaby!

    How about Batik's? I've starched them and had a lot of sticking when ironing. Should I wash them and then starch them?

      Amazon has it. I just bought 7 bottles at my local grocery store. I still buy it all the time.

    Another question
    I am using a jelly roll 2.5” strips to make a quilt as you go christmas stocking and it says to starch the strips before cutting. So do spray them damp, let dry, then iron them and then cut?

    • @HeavenlyStitches
      @HeavenlyStitches  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure which pattern you're using, but that should work. They don't need to be bone dry before you start ironing, but be careful not to press and slide your iron. If you do that you can distort your fabrics (which is the exact opposite thing we want when starching). Just pick up your iron slightly before moving it and you should be fine.

    Will starch shrink fabric? I was hesitant to use it on precuts because I’d heard it would cause shrinkage.

    • @yazminprado4453
      @yazminprado4453 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will shrink fabric. If I don't need all the inches from precuts, I will starch, otherwise I would buy yardage and cut down.

  • @shellyt8432

    Do you always prewash your fabric before starching it?

    • @HeavenlyStitches
      @HeavenlyStitches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically I don’t prewash my fabrics, mostly because I’m too impatient and I know I’m using good quality fabrics. If I were using fabrics that were from an unknown source or if I knew they were lower quality then I might prewash.
      Generally, though I don’t. If I haven’t and I do have a worry about the colors running, then I’d probably just throw in a couple of the Shout Color catcher sheets. I’ve used them on a couple of projects and have never had a problem. I don’t know if that was because the fabrics weren’t going to run in the first place or because the color catcher sheet worked the way it was supposed to. (Look for future video on this subject!)

    Hi again🙂
    Because is lot of fabric for a quilting project, I’m thinking throw the dump starched fabrics into the dry machine.... do you think is a good idea?.... I will make a test

    • @HeavenlyStitches
      @HeavenlyStitches  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you trying to get the starch out of fabrics or do a mass soak to get the starch into the fabrics? I really recommend using a spray bottle and iron to starch your fabrics. It's a little tedious, but it's the best way to avoid really distorting your fabric.

    • @quebellorecordar
      @quebellorecordar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heavenly Stitches the idea is starch without wiggle the quilt fabric and as well trying to avoid hanging lot of wet fabrics and waiting for become almost dry..,,so I did with the dry machine, and worked really well, I throw 20 fat quarters completely damp at medium high for 10 minutes, darks and light fabric, the result was really good like hanging them and iron a little bit for have a completely smooth surface🤓🙌🏻 saving lot of time 🌟 I love your videos such a lot of important information 🤗

    Could you use parchment paper over the fabric while pressing, so it won't stick to the iron?

    • @sarahdebord5548

    Vodka stiffens since it’s made from potatoes

    • @HeavenlyStitches
      @HeavenlyStitches  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have heard that! I find it much more fun to use regular starch and drink the vodka (though not when sewing, I don't need any more obstacles to straight seams!).

    • @rld1278
      @rld1278 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually it's hard to find a potato based vodka anymore and the ones that are tend to be more expensive. I went down that road a few years ago and gave up.

    Hi, no mention of shrinkage? I was under the impression that starching fabric shrinks it Is that right?

    • @HeavenlyStitches
      @HeavenlyStitches  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've not noticed enough shrinkage to be a problem. It is possible that it affects certain fabrics more than others.

    • @sandan2358
      @sandan2358 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I only notice it on precuts.

    Dry iron or steam iron?

  • @puppaysrule
    @puppaysrule ปีที่แล้ว

    I saw another few videos on starching and they just spray the fabric with the starch and then they air dry it for a day. No ironing to get it dry so a huge time saver

    • @marym2811
      @marym2811 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You probably realize that they do iron the fabric, it's just ironed after it has air dried.
