1) It's called paddle boarding. It's pretty popular up here in MN. People will also paddle out and do yoga on the board, or take their dog out with them. 2) Try 92.9 for Coast to Coast. Art Bell died in 2018, but at least here, they replay some of his shows on Saturday night at like 11pm or something. Art was great. I don't care for George as much, and end up listening to Red Eye Radio instead. 3) I'll bet you a pound to a penny that by the time you are home from Britt, you've got a proper set of fishing gear or some better paddle/motor arrangement waiting for you. You are a lucky and very grateful guy, and I appreciate you sharing both of those things with us.
Lot of times someone that really doesn't ride but is well known in the regular community runs and because they're well known by the everyday community gets a louder applaud. That's how one wins king or/and queen is by how loud the audience applauds. Each hobo running for king and queen says their speech then that's when the applaud happens. Yep, so sometimes (but not often) someone gets elected that way. I believe there should be a strict test on railroad knowledge and knowledge of places to camp and names of routes etc and whomever scores highest is king or queen

Like London taxi drivers they have to sit a test known as” the knowledge”. It should demonstrate their knowledge and experience in that field of expertise. And you can apply that to any field of expertise even hobo lifestyle. If it’s just about asthetics but it’s pointless that’s like going to a scarecrow convention. Very entertaining but ultimately useless.

And after all the emails back and forth and the respectful way Mark comes across ranks high with us. I've met many Hobs over the 20 years years I maintained a train depot and most were stand-up guys and gals. Shoestring reminds me of one named Blue Moon who always knew he was welcome to stay at our house when he was around. I emailed Shoestring about taking a phone battery charger powered by a small fan I made him so I'm anxious to see if he gets any use out of it on his upcoming trip to Britt. Also I want him to win The Hobo King award. That would really make me happy for him. Do you by chance know Mark personally?

By far the greatest thing about HOBO SHOESTRING is that he keeps me from looking at my phone or any other devices, other than his youtube videos! Hes not fake. Hes straight up.
I have a Sevlor Fish Hunter blow up boat that I used quite a bit while living in California to stealth fish in areas that they try to seal off access to anglers. Very similar to your boat and similar oars. My oars come apart and collapse and are designed to be inserted through those loops on the boat while disassembled then reassembled then you have some real oaring action.

Mason City has been a fuel stop for me for 30-some years since I left MN. I know of Clear Lake, as well. Had no idea that Britt is just west of there. Had no idea of a Hobo Convention. Had no idea some of the royalty is from my home town in MPLS... Minneapolis Jewel. I’m impressed. This is a real thing. Now, Britt is on my bucket list. Have fun at the Hobo Convention. My oldest Sister is “Cinders” I believe 1998 Hobo Queen. Still kicked in Helena Montana tho health not so good. Sight is going lots of pain still in housing unit with bunch of mean special Ed seniors so stays to herself. We talked the other day. Fires all over the place including some in Helena yikes! Air quality very poor so doesn’t go outside due to breathing issues. Now age 78 & I’m 70 in Westminster Maryland. I pray 4her daily. I know that feeling around the tracks, The smell of creosote and tar and the smell of the fresh evening air and the dew settling on the grass, The smell of a camp fire all make you feel very safe even though you’re On a train track it still feels like a safe place to be somehow.
You need to get you a milk crate for hauling things on your bike. A very simple thing to attach. A few zip tyes backed up by hose clamps to help it stayed secured.

We had a brothel owner run for political office. He partied too hard and passed away before the election. We voted him into office anyway. Art was also an armature radio operator, ( a ham). He is what we call a silent key, (comes from the days of telegraph). I never joined into his transmissions, but I would hear him from time to time. Traditionally there has been a parade on the Saturday at 10:00 a.m., where everyone can let their hobo spirit soar as they participate in the parade. A phrase that describes the parade is, "Some in rags, some in tags, some in velvet gowns." According to the Chamber of Commerce: "Whether you're part of this large grand parade, or a spectator, the spirit of the day is sure to capture your mood. Marching bands, queens, business floats, children, adults, and hobos all come down the streets in one long line and share the fun that only a Hobo Convention can provide." From a Convention attendee: Britt's "Hobo Days" celebration usually draws about 20,000 tourists over several days, and about 75 or 80 tramps. There is usually a carnival installed on the main drag, with a small Ferris wheel, Tilt-a-Whirl rides and so on. Most of the rides are more suitable for smaller children. There are various food service trucks selling barbecue, pork-chop-on-a-stick, cotton candy and so on. There are often people with sort of "flea market" tables, "farmer's market" tables selling local produce, etc. Of course, the Hobo Museum is open, and Ms. Castillo's portraits of the Hobo Kings and Queens are on display. During most conventions there is usually live music somewhere downtown in the late afternoon and at night. Saturday morning there is the "Hobo Days" parade. It's a lot like a small-town Fourth of July celebration. The parade includes fire trucks, local high school marching bands, ROTC units, antique cars, 4-H Club and FFA clubs on horseback, restored antique tractors and farm equipment and so forth. There is always a trailer float for the hobos to ride. Hobos who participate in the parade bring a supply of individually wrapped hard candy to throw to the children along the parade route. A signature event every year is the selection of the King and Queen of Hobos. There are rules about who can run and the candidates' qualifications. Men must actually have been a tramp, but there are no qualification rules for the women running for Queen, and no requirement for them to ever have actually been a hobo, although many of the women who have been selected as Queen were actual rail riders with bona fide hoboing experience. The "election" is done at the town's gazebo, and is preceded by campaign speeches. A group of vetted hobo judges decides who wins by the applause of the crowd. Inevitably, drama ensues. All this happens as the town is serving up several thousand gallons of mulligan stew. There is a difference between the town of Britt's "Hobo Days" celebration and the actual convention meeting itself, although visitors are more than welcome to come visit and/or camp in the "National Hobo Jungle" next to the railroad tracks. The actual convention is a convention of members of Tourist Union #63, founded in 1899 and still existing today. (There were sixty-three original members.) Much of the convention's activities take place in the Jungle, or in the National Hobo Cemetery (which is in a corner of Britt's Evergreen Cemetery.) There is a day dedicated to cleaning, re-painting and mowing the hobo graves, and a Memorial Service the following day. Generally, shortly after the memorial service, a Hobo Council is convened, and this is an activity limited to actual hobos and members of TU63. You can identify many members of TU63 by a small round patch sewn to a cap or jacket that is a white-bordered black circle with the white numerals "63" inside. The jungle operates more-or-less on the "honor system." People with the means to do so are asked to contribute an amount similar to what they would pay for a restaurant meal into the "Frisco Circle" kitty. Those without funds or with limited funds are welcome to eat for free, but encouraged to help with the kitchen chores. (Half the fun of the convention is being "part of the crew" that does the cooking, "pearl diving" and cleaning up. Newbies are encouraged to report to the "Crumb Boss" for an assignment somewhere on the kitchen crew.) Camping in the Jungle is free. No fireworks, firewater or firearms are permitted within the jungle. (There are several bars and excellent restaurants within easy walking distance.) There are no hotel or motels in Britt. Tent camping or "tarp camping" within the Jungle is free. Other events Other events during Hobo weekend include a Hobo 5K & Hobo 10K Walk/Run, Hobo King & Hobo Queen coronation,[4] Hobo Museum, Hobo Auction, Hobo Memorial Service, Hobo Sunday Outdoor Church Service, Hobo Classic Car Show, Hobo Arts and Crafts Show and various hobo musical entertainment. The Hobo Jungle is open to the public.
You live in a great area to get Coast to Coast on the FM dial, that's right on FM! 92.9 FM bluff City. I used to listen to it all the time when I lived in Lee county Virginia on this station.

I thought I’d seen a technique where the paddle was used like a rudder but they used it in a side to side motion to propel them forward from the stern. I don’t know what it’s called but it seemed pretty efficient.

His death is probably just a conspiracy theory, though. I mean...this is Art Bell, right? Nothing is supposed to be as it seems. Maybe Shoestring will see him back in the dim shadows of the campfire at the Hobo Convention. 🤣
@@ReflectedMiles We lived in the same town, (Pahrump Nv) Ever hear him talk about the kingdom of Nye? That is the name of the county that we are in. It is a quirky place. Brothels are legal here. We had a brothel owner run for political office. He partied too hard and passed away before the election. We voted him into office anyway.
Art was also an armature radio operator, ( a ham). He is what we call a silent key, (comes from the days of telegraph). I never joined into his transmissions, but I would hear him from time to time. I knew people that knew him, but I was never a groupie that wanted his attention.

Traditionally there has been a parade on the Saturday at 10:00 a.m., where everyone can let their hobo spirit soar as they participate in the parade. A phrase that describes the parade is, "Some in rags, some in tags, some in velvet gowns."
According to the Chamber of Commerce:
"Whether you're part of this large grand parade, or a spectator, the spirit of the day is sure to capture your mood. Marching bands, queens, business floats, children, adults, and hobos all come down the streets in one long line and share the fun that only a Hobo Convention can provide."
From a Convention attendee:
Britt's "Hobo Days" celebration usually draws about 20,000 tourists over several days, and about 75 or 80 tramps. There is usually a carnival installed on the main drag, with a small Ferris wheel, Tilt-a-Whirl rides and so on. Most of the rides are more suitable for smaller children. There are various food service trucks selling barbecue, pork-chop-on-a-stick, cotton candy and so on. There are often people with sort of "flea market" tables, "farmer's market" tables selling local produce, etc. Of course, the Hobo Museum is open, and Ms. Castillo's portraits of the Hobo Kings and Queens are on display. During most conventions there is usually live music somewhere downtown in the late afternoon and at night. Saturday morning there is the "Hobo Days" parade. It's a lot like a small-town Fourth of July celebration. The parade includes fire trucks, local high school marching bands, ROTC units, antique cars, 4-H Club and FFA clubs on horseback, restored antique tractors and farm equipment and so forth. There is always a trailer float for the hobos to ride. Hobos who participate in the parade bring a supply of individually wrapped hard candy to throw to the children along the parade route.
A signature event every year is the selection of the King and Queen of Hobos. There are rules about who can run and the candidates' qualifications. Men must actually have been a tramp, but there are no qualification rules for the women running for Queen, and no requirement for them to ever have actually been a hobo, although many of the women who have been selected as Queen were actual rail riders with bona fide hoboing experience. The "election" is done at the town's gazebo, and is preceded by campaign speeches. A group of vetted hobo judges decides who wins by the applause of the crowd. Inevitably, drama ensues. All this happens as the town is serving up several thousand gallons of mulligan stew.
There is a difference between the town of Britt's "Hobo Days" celebration and the actual convention meeting itself, although visitors are more than welcome to come visit and/or camp in the "National Hobo Jungle" next to the railroad tracks. The actual convention is a convention of members of Tourist Union #63, founded in 1899 and still existing today. (There were sixty-three original members.) Much of the convention's activities take place in the Jungle, or in the National Hobo Cemetery (which is in a corner of Britt's Evergreen Cemetery.) There is a day dedicated to cleaning, re-painting and mowing the hobo graves, and a Memorial Service the following day. Generally, shortly after the memorial service, a Hobo Council is convened, and this is an activity limited to actual hobos and members of TU63. You can identify many members of TU63 by a small round patch sewn to a cap or jacket that is a white-bordered black circle with the white numerals "63" inside.
The jungle operates more-or-less on the "honor system." People with the means to do so are asked to contribute an amount similar to what they would pay for a restaurant meal into the "Frisco Circle" kitty. Those without funds or with limited funds are welcome to eat for free, but encouraged to help with the kitchen chores. (Half the fun of the convention is being "part of the crew" that does the cooking, "pearl diving" and cleaning up. Newbies are encouraged to report to the "Crumb Boss" for an assignment somewhere on the kitchen crew.) Camping in the Jungle is free. No fireworks, firewater or firearms are permitted within the jungle. (There are several bars and excellent restaurants within easy walking distance.) There are no hotel or motels in Britt.
Tent camping or "tarp camping" within the Jungle is free.

Other events during Hobo weekend include a Hobo 5K & Hobo 10K Walk/Run, Hobo King & Hobo Queen coronation,[4] Hobo Museum, Hobo Auction, Hobo Memorial Service, Hobo Sunday Outdoor Church Service, Hobo Classic Car Show, Hobo Arts and Crafts Show and various hobo musical entertainment. The Hobo Jungle is open to the public.

I thought I’d seen a technique where the paddle was used like a rudder but they used it in a side to side motion to propel them forward from the stern. I don’t know what it’s called but it seemed pretty efficient.

A soup can , eye bolt with a nut and a little mortar or cement makes a good anchor. Plus it wont pop a hole in your boat. That looked like goose shit

I have a Brother nlaw That lives in Fort Dodge Iowa, I will half to get on a map, and see how far that is coming from Indiana, take a road trip out there, go to the hobo convention, and see him in one trip.
