    I just bought barley, $32/50lb bag that wasn't labeled for sprouting, but is feed grade so I'm hoping that's right. 😰 I like your method, thank you for sharing! I didn't realize how old this video is at first until you mentioned the price, crazy how prices have went up.

      Everything is crazy this year (and last year). I’m glad you liked the video and thanks for commenting. The barley you bought sounds like it should work. Let me know and good luck!

    I am just starting to get interested in growing fodder. My first-time raising chickens but I also want quail and rabbits. everything I plant can be fed to one and all, hopefully. Thank you for your video. It was very informative and kept me interested in what you were saying.

    Very nice!!!
    I add a dozen or so black beans or other beans and corn seed (whatever is cheap). This bumps up the protein levels by a couple percentage points.
    Thanks for the video

    Just a suggestion to viewers; shop around at your local mill. I looked online at buying bags of barley (untreated) for 50 pounds it was $20 plus another $25 shipping but my local mill had 50 pounds bags for $7

    I’m not familiar with growing fodder. Does this cut down feed costs? If so how much do you save?

    • @archertales8670
      @archertales8670  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all depends on where you buy your barley, I don't know what country you're in, so I can not tell you how much it can save you, but I do a cost break down at the end of the video.

    Excellent, didn’t know were to find the trays! Looked at Trucker Supply, they didn’t them. Plant nursery! Where do you buy the barely? Online?

    • @archertales8670
      @archertales8670  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I purchased my barley in Petaluma, California from a feed store. They generally come in 50 pound bags; at the time of this video a bag cost between $15-$20. If you can find it online with cheap shipping, go for it, but I'd check all the local feed stores first.

    How much fodder do you feed your rabbits? I have 4 pound breeds and 8-9 1/2 pound breeds. Also, do you feed them twice a day like the chickens?
    Do you feed a combination of fodder and rabbit pellets, or just fodder?
    Thanks for the video!

    • @archertales8670
      @archertales8670  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, sorry I didn't see your comment until today. I feed the rabbits a combination of fodder, timothy hay, and pellets. I feed them once a day, but I give them enough to graze on throughout the day and night if they're hungry. They know how much to feed themselves, and if I overfeed (as I have on occasion), there will be food leftover at the next feeding.

    I wonder what prices you are paying for barley now. Are you stiII feeding fodder i am about to build a big system and grow a Iot more, Barley, wheat, Sunflower, and corn. I am going to build a green house because growth slows to almost nothing under 50 degrees.

    there is a feed store in every town around me, none of them can order organic seed. that means all that is left is major chemical barley seed. one bag i saw said if you feed to a animal it will kill them.also the barley smells under the mat.. yes its hot here. i live on solar, so no air cond. any help

      I live in Missouri and there are several populations of Amish farmers who grow barley and it is not government certified but grown with organic practices and it is not gmo seed. check around with local farmers and see if you can get it to grow for you good luck

    Hi, please dont buy a tripod and dont learn how to film as your brilliant clip is just so easy to watch and you make it look as easy as it is, no ego trip. I am looking at this clip as I volunteer for an animal shelter in Goa India, WAG @welfareforanimalsingoa and I want to get something going for the calves we have as they dont do so well without their mamas sadly. Some are abandoned due to injuries from being on the street. So thank you so much. follow us on facebook Pet Life Goa.

    Over soaking slows the growth. Conditions would have to be pretty cool to require even 12 hours. When I did a lot of alfalfa sprouts optimum soak was about 4 hours. Of course barley is larger but I doubt it absorbs much past 8 hours.
    Bean sprouts grow much less initial root if they push against weight. To get nice fat bean sprouts with less root have them push against a weighted lid.

      I only soak my barley overnight and they do just fine. I use the plastic trays with the 2nd screen on top (6 pack that I'd gotten from Amazon). My chickens love them, too.

    • @archertales8670

      What sort of bugs? I do get whiteflies that are attracted to the fodder (they like grass), but the chickens love eating them, so it doesn't bother me.
