You and your family are always welcome in the UK. You are such lovely people and seem to really enjoy yourselves in our country. We most definitely need more people like you.
I'm pretty old, and I remember as a child the family going down to Cornwall from London each Summer on a steam train. I still have a clear picture of leaning out of the carriage window on a long open bend, and watching the locomotive many carriages ahead emitting a long plume of grey smoke, drifting across the blue sky. For a little boy, it was such an exciting way to start the holiday!
Oh wow, thank you for sharing this wonderful video ❤ didn't know about this train journey. How lovely it is to see these old trains again, I have always loved Christmas lights to the point where I leave lots of them up all year round, so I really enjoyed seeing these 😊 on the train ride. Sheringham is also one of our favourite places, too, we would walk from cromer to Sheringham every other day while we were on holiday 😊 Merry Christmas, Jess,Chris, and kids 🎄☃️
Steam trains were an integral part of my youth. I particularly remember the Flying Scotsman express passenger train, passing by my home every night at precisely 23.00 hrs from Edinburgh on its way to London. It was so dramatic as it passed by at great speed then, with the plume of steam billowing behind. Kids then were often 'train spotters' and would travel miles to spot a particularly rare train, and be cock - a - hoop when they could cross it off in their 'Spotters Guide'. Holidays on the east coast were a real treat because we usually went by steam train. Your video released those memories, and other happy memories too. Cheers ! Sheffield South Yorkshire
My mother was a crossing keeper she opened the gates across the road for the few cars ect. that in those day were, so steam trains were very integral part of my child hood, we lived according to the times of the trains. The wall our house was just about 6 foot from the track.
Ray, We truly are trying to make the most of this beautiful opportunity we have been given. We also love sharing the wonderful world with you all. I know that at times, the world can feel dark for some, so I want to sprinkle a little light wherever I can. We love and appreciate the memories made and sharing with you all. Thank you for the love! PS. My apologies. The music wouldn't work properly throughout the video. So I could only add it in a couple of spots. Hopefully, it still worked well. 🫶 🤍 Jess x
Absolutely amazing, you would love the Paignton/Dartmouth Steam Railway over the River Dart which is where Murder Mystery Crime writer Agatha Christie lved at Greenway Mansion. Definitely need to visit Dartmoor and Boscastle before you go back. Also check out Powderham Castle where many Tudor period films were made with Titanic's Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson.@DaydreamersBarn
We went to Wales on holiday every year by Steam Train. I was told that as a baby I rode in my Pram, in the Guards Van when the family went for a day out, my Dad with me of course. That was before Beecham took all the local stations away. Talk about progress. Have a wonderful Christmas.🎄
@proudyorkshireman7708 yes there are loads of steam railways in the UK still but one does have to wonder for how long with the UK govt silly green agenda by 2030/ 2050 whether they will just be museum pieces or whether they'll still be permitted to run. Especially seeing as they would need a boiler conversion to burn wood instead of coal
I love travelling on these heritage lines and on stem trains that are allowed to use the main line and have travelled all over the UK from Carlisle in the North, to Bristol in the south as well as many shorter heritage companies and I love them all. I have even driven the Locomotives on special 'driving experience' visits for special birthdays, and it is a wonderful feeling to have hundreds of tons of vehicle under your control on the footplate of a steam locomotive and cooking breakfast on a clean shovel in the fire of such an engine while waiting for the loco to build up a full head of steam at 6:30 am on a bright summer morning. Enjoy it while you can.
Hiya Jess, Chris, Colette and Shane, definitely something magical about being able to do a touch of time travelling, love how these steam railways are looked after and cared for by so many devoted volunteers. Had the pleasure to ride a steam train in North Exeter Devon from a station called Watchet and it is something I will never forget. Thank you for a very enjoyable Christmas vlog my friends. You guys are the best. Have a lovely week ahead and see you soon. xx. ♥
Stephen, It really was magical, feeling like we all stepped back in time. We really appreciate the care they show for the steam trains, and the service to the community is so amazing. I'm so glad we could take you all along with us. Hope you have a beautiful Thursday and the rest of your week. See you this Sunday! 🤍 Jess & family x
Well, I've been to the NNR dozens of times, but I have never seen it like this. What a fantastic video. Well done, Chris, for really capturing the atmosphere. Outstanding views of the train from the bridge. I'm so glad you all had a great time. Sheringham is well worth a visit. It has a traditional sweet shop (candy store), great fish and chips, and much more. xx
In certain places, you can have a train journey while you have a three-course meal which is a wonderful experience. Hubbies and I have done a couple of these one down Dorset and the other one was North Yorkshire. So pleased you have experienced this wonderful mode of transport.
Hi Jess, Chris and family, I have had communication problems and have missed you guys for a while. I am old enough to remember travelling in steam trains, being born in the early 50's. I have vivid memories of trips to Brighton and other places, with me and my older brother, heads stuck out of the windows and our late mother, wiping soot smuts off our faces with her handkerchief moistened with spit. Such innocent fun from a lifetime ago. I'm delighted to see that you are still enjoying our little island and with all your adventures, you have probably seen more of it than most British people. Have a lovely Christmas and a happy and healthy 2025, to you all. Mark from London.
Before refrigeration, the trains would have brought milk, eggs, butter into the cities in the early morning. And then take tourists from the cities out to the seaside towns. It was the first experience workers had of a seaside holiday. City families would also go out to the countryside to work on the farms during crop harvesting. Some of these trains hold a "Whodunnit" murder mystery comedy night with a dinner. Every year, a Spruce Christmas tree is donated by Oslo to London in memory of WW2.
What a great video. The steam railway have done an amazing job with the lights. That's actually made me feel festive watching that! I remember stopping at a crossing for the High Peak Heritage Railway Christmas special in Matlock near the Peak District and everyone was waving out of the windows as they went past. Sadly one just up the road from me Elsecar Heritage Railway had to sell their engines due to a lack of funds. They had Santa specials at Christmas.
I live in Kent and we have a couple of heritage railways. One in particular Tenterden is vet near me. They have a santas special at the moment. We are so lucky that we still keep these railways running. All done by volunteers.
I can't remember exactly where, possibly Devon or Dorset, but I was once in the West Country for work in the run-up to Christmas. On a very cold evening, with a good frost, and even a little snow on the ground, I caught a glimpse of a train just like this travelling along a hillside. It's lights were reflected in the water and the snow, and it was a truly magical sight - even for an old cynic like me. I later found out it was a famous local attraction, and it was far less impressive when seen close-up, but I'll never forget that first sighting.
Before you leave England please go to Tenby in Wales its a magical village by the sea, There are many local steam lines in the UK run by volunteers you will find them up and down the country the most famous one called the BlueBell Line, steam railway based in East Sussex post code TN22 3QL. Sounds like your driving an old diesel.
I thought of you all and what would you be able to do now the weather has really changed! You've come up with another gem, got me scrabbling for tickets on the fab ride from Sheringham to Holt..We took our grandchildren years ago, for a Harry Potter train ride! They got so excited...The little town does so much, they have a 40's weekend, in Summer, when people dress up wearing fancy dress, a LOT of Americans come to see that! They have a parade through the town, then at the station, the have a Band playing music like Glenn Miller,s! Also you can get fresh sea food, although the Cromer crabs are famous world wide, Sheringham haves them as well....Love to you all..xxxx
We (UK) have many private railways up and down the country and many are Christmas orientated. We also have main line steam train runs all year round. I have been to many.
I love a good preservation line.. Amazing how many locomotives were saved especially in the Barry scrapyard because the owner was too busy to cut them up, and he inadvertently preserved them..
Hi folks that was great! We have a steam train route near to where I am the Severn valley railway. We used to go on the Santa express with deaf kids most years ( my son is deaf) from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth back when he was a young one. It is a daylight ride so no Christmas lights back then but great scenery and Santa did the rounds with presents for all the kids on the train. Really was a magical trip even for us adults..
I was always using a local steam train to visit my Granny. As youngsters we used to walk over a road bridge over the railway and watch the tank engines
My wife and I have riden the same line glad you enjoyed I was a volunteer at bressingham steam not far from you lol best wishes Bazza oh by the way some of Dads army scenes were shot on that line all the best to you and the family Happy Christmas 😜
If you ever get down to Somerset, we have The West Somerset Railway, the longest heritage railway in the UK; twenty two miles and ten stations, running between Bishops Lydeard (pronounced Lid-e-ud) and Minehead, on the coast. The trains are pulled by both steam and diesel engines and there are a number of special events throughout the year.
That was a lovely experience. Not so much with the going back in time comment. I was a teenager when I used to stand on the bridge and watch the steam trains passing underneath. A mixture of hot steam and smoke from the coal. Between them and smog, polluted fog, I honestly don't know how we survived. Chuff, chuff - brilliant sound.
Did not know such things existed and I am old enough to remember when steam trains were the only kind. The night travel and unusual lighting along with the unusual experience is something to remember for sure.
Hi, loved your UK blog. We have relatives in KY who visit us every couple of years. They love to ride on our West Somerset heritage steam railway, which is the longest in the UK (24miles). It travels through some very scenic countryside from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead on the Bristol Channel. Enjoy the rest of your tour. Happy Christmas.
USAF? My grandfather flew his RE8 as a 2nd Lt out to France at the end of July 1917. He was eighteen on 30 September 1917. Survived the war, son of a Baptist Minister, he became a Quaker after WW1.
I do like steam trains and have used the poppy line several times. As a child staying with grandparents near Chesterfield in Derbyshire I used to travel up from London by steam train. It was common for passengers getting off to stop by the engine and thank the driver for a good ride. We kids also used to cross fields nearby to watch the Flying Scotsman pass by. Happy days. Back in Spalding in the real world a couple of years ago I noticed a crowd standing by the local level crossing. Of course I had to join it, just in time to see the Flying Scotsman steam past at speed on an excursion trip to York.
You asked if any of us had travelled on a steam train. When I was a boy ALL trains were steam trains! Immediately after the war, when we had rationing, I used to get tuppense worth of sherbet from our village shop and go to sit on the embankment of the railway line that ran through the meadows close by, and wave to the engine drivers as I ate it. Happy days.
There’s another ‘Santa Express’ close by that runs from Alysham to Wroxham you might like to try. It’s a narrow gauge railway, maybe one for the smaller kids or just a couple.
It’s about 8 years ago last summer that I rode on the NNR. I remember thinking that the seats in the Mark I carriages were a lot more comfortable than the ones in the modern trains from Norwich to Sheringham! Though I do remember riding in Mark I carriages on the main line in my school visits to London over 50 years ago…
Hi! I have never ridden that particular line. Where we are, we have The Great Central Railway which they proudly say is the UK's only main line heritage railway. It has been used in many films. I have never heard anyone refer to a railway carriage as a "cart" before. Coach, or Car are the short versions. Thanks for the train trip. Bye!
As children we wd stand on the bridge and wait for the train to pass under us for us to be completely surrounded by the steam and smoke from the engine and find ourselves in a magical world of mists.
I used to go to school across a bridge like that. I can still smell the mixture of smoke, steam and oil that filled the air if you where on it when a steamer passed below. Most of the trains were electric but we still had the occasional steamer. I can just about remember being about 5 years old in a compartment like that one in a station waiting for the train to leave. My dad got off to buy something before it left and I along with my sister and brother who were with me went into full blown hysteria thinking it would leave without him. My mum could not get us to calm down until he came back.
going on that very train soon..... hope you enjoyed Norfolk and come back 'in season' it is a totally different vibe. In the UK you can buy small chocolate novelties to hang on the Christmas tree. Years ago we did this and then found they'd all disappeared (about 12). All that remained was the hanging loop and a short piece of torn aluminium foil. The cat we had then must have smelt the chocolate, torn each one down, removed the aluminium foil and ate the lot. Couldn't be angry with him but we never hung any more up again.
Coaches are so called because prior to trains people travelled by stage coaches. When railways were created they just put the coaches on the train bodies. (See old pictures.)

Question for Chris, when you go back to the US will you buy a manual or auto vehicle. I've heard that there's not many about, I've also heard that a manual is the best anti theft device you can have, no one can drive them.😂 Merry Xmas to all the family.
Walked by it, many a time, saying we must go for a ride on it. Still not done it. The Station at Holt, was the Station at Stalham, removed an assembled at Holt. Stalham people were not too happy about it.
Oh I imagine they would be! When we went Sheringham to Holt there was a man with a beautiful Suffolk Punch horse, awaiting at the station, to take us in a cart, to Holt for shopping......
Oooof, how gaudy can things get ? Steam trains, what's not to like ? Light nights and christmas lights on the whole just seem to lack any real thought put into them to me. Steam train with strings of lights just haphazardly thrown on ? Nah, it doesn't work for me.
You and your family are always welcome in the UK. You are such lovely people and seem to really enjoy yourselves in our country. We most definitely need more people like you.

It is lovely that steam has not gone away completely.
There are around 320 steam locomotives currently working in the U.K. with many more in storage, restoration, on static display and also new builds

Wasn't so much fun on a freezing cold winter morning on a bloody-minded engine that stubbornly refused to steam!😂

Watchet is in Somerset not Devon and is on the West Somerset Railway, the longest preserved line in Britain.

Indeed - it was the fish and chips that stood out as much as the train ride on my visit!
@Nimboid-20 Absolutely! They are equally essential.

This is one of many preserved steam railways in the UK that do the same this time of year

Interesting fact on the Poppy Line was when lots of railways were closed in the 50/60's the line was completely ripped out, but thankfully someone had the foresight to buy it all back before it was disposed of.

In October / November time every year they have a 40s weekend at Sheringham also.
The UK has a few working steam engine lines to explore. This one is one of my favourites because I live in Norfolk.
You looked so happy
Steam trains every young lads wish to be a steam train driver, when I wuz a bairn in the 60's, and where still in service, before diesel and electric where introduced. Proper Northern Hemisphere Christmas 🎄
Just to mention you were in a compartment not a cart, the whole train is formed of coaches also known as carriages.

Chris has got a laugh like Mutley😅
Try the York railway museum you won't be disappointed
Question for Chris, when you go back to the US will you buy a manual or auto vehicle. I've heard that there's not many about, I've also heard that a manual is the best anti theft device you can have, no one can drive them.😂
Merry Xmas to all the family.
I enjoyed this video. I do have a question why does your son always have his headphones on? 😂😊
It’s a carriage not a cart. Lol 😂
Looks like willy wonkas chocolate river tour😃👍
Don’t you just love the smell of the steam and the sound of clickity clack clickity clack

Daytime you get the views
i ised to work for north norfolk railway as a full time paid worker
Grew up on steam trains. The closest man has ever come to creating a living being.
It kind of makes the Coke Vehicles look dismal or pathetic.
Prediction 🔮 : ten years or so after you leave the UK and head back to the US, you’ll decide to move back to the UK for good!
