- Really surprised this isn't on TH-cam, it's a 1991 documentary about San Francisco experimental group The Residents...you can see the likes of Orbital or Deadmau5 aren't exactly new in their masks or even lit up faces & torch eyes (check out the 1985 live performance 35mins in!). Narrated by Penn Jillette this is taken of my own VHS - which sadly is crumbling at the 7:20 min mark, the rest seems fine.
Features clips of Don't Be Cruel, Teddy Bear, Hello Skinny, One Minute Movies, strange Japanese interviews, It's A Man's Man's Man's World, From the Plains to Mexico - Night Music, Earth vs The Flying Saucers, Reich & Roll Jailhouse Rock, and many more.
Why isn't this available commercially on DVD?
I remember when I thought Talking Heads was weird...Anybody with a craving for weird music will eventually end up at The Residents
@@jamesgonzalez2973 But I'm still waiting to see the Duck Stab 50th anniverssary show, which has been cancelled twice now. Still don't know when it's happening, but must be that tour that they're doing right now. Bit confused now..
i think they just laugh at you and say: you fell for that one ie: they're nought more than basket cases and people have been canned for looking like alleged residents' members... i used to won 1 minute movies. maybe the cryptic corp could go seek out the lags who stole a heap deal of shit from me - not literal shit. fine representative art.
to me it goes from talking heads, devo, zappa, the residents and finally throbbing gristle.....
then ramleh
@@FrenchToasted1995A History of the Residents - The Eyes Scream with Penn & Teller 1950pm 12.10.22 th-cam.com/video/pFaAKJGXjNw/w-d-xo.html hmmmmmmm... i doubt they are a coherent whole, though. t.g? hmmmmm. dunno. i think you need to be specifically geared to a certain mindset. and i have found you take yer life in yer hands enjoying that band. i am surmising more deaths have been caused by just listening to it than really preaching the coomb credo. and, let's face it, they get kindda angry if yer not OTO or in awe of the OTO... as for the missing link: laibach. that community is still going strong. i leave of those guys. it's old hat and i feel they should have knocked the old college media studies project on the head a while back. the residents? old hat. but they or it can still be heard shining thru via john dwyer's skits (osees)...... noise annoys and some times it doesnt. people annoy more than music, though. it's strictly personal and i doubt i can alter yer perception of what you enjoy and i wouldnt even try. adios old dragon...
@@FrenchToasted1995 Throbbing Gristle I've heard and would agree they're pretty out there. Haven't heard of Ramleh yet... Thanks for introducing me to an unfamiliar band!
I like how the video messing up at 7:28 wasn't intentional, but is fitting anyway.
I thought the same thing it felt like a cool effect
the residents and penn and teller.... I am absolutely ok with this.
Great memories of several live concerts. I got to see Snakefinger when he was still alive. Such good times...fine performance art at its best!
On the Ration | British Pathé 0958am 25.7.22 yep. as much as you wanna coax that beard...i am thinking: i know sod all about snakefinger. the music wasn't amazingly out-there, though... i suppose, akin to the grateful dead, it deoends on how much shit ie;' drugs you ingested. shit can mean drugs or stuff in general. generic shit generic stuff. the residents churned out some shit, though. literal and/or euphemistic is anybody's guess... pretentious bollox or worth your perusal? dunno... but i bet yer feel compelled to get in that car in anticipation of yer neighbour going out to the local store(?) that means, dear friend, consumer conscious society has paid you a visit and it has been found to be insane. yer expected to deal with it. on yer own. alone. cowards!!!!
Saw Residents with Snakefinger, Mortimer Snerd. Lucky to have attended .
@@indioloco6600 A History of the Residents - The Eyes Scream with Penn & Teller 0738am 17.10.22 was that in the real world or when you travelled incognito as UBU Roi? where did you see snakefinger et al play? it's of interest - can you expatiate on this... it would be worthy of a tome in itself...
@@JJONNYREPP I saw this show at The Palm in Milwaukee Wisconsin. 1985?
@@indioloco6600 A History of the Residents - The Eyes Scream with Penn & Teller 21615pm 17.10.22 reads like someone is asking you for a prompt re: what did they get up to circa 1985... .................. as for you seeing the residents live: cool. i think it would have been an experience to see the residents prior to the collective becoming flabby old hat crazies as opposed to just downright crazy refer to 3rd reich n roll etc etc etc... is it still hush hush as to which guest stars they used to have join the band as opposed to just blatantly sample? those eyeballs and masks hid a whole host of ills and freakish impulses...
They were doing this weird stuff before David Lynch.
Rest in eyeball, Hardy,
This is one fantastic piece of music history. So much talent and imagination.
How much drugs do you have to take for this to sound good ?
@@Friendly_Boo still waiting on an answer. im into weird obscure stuff and this freaks me out
@@sawtoothiandi
I don't understand why this would freak you out if you like weird, obscure stuff.
@@Friendly_Boo
It's all right that they're not your bag. I, however, agree with the OP.
@@davidadams2395 i dont mind being freaked out, i guess i cant get a handle on what angle theyre coming from. i feel like a method actor here, 'whats my motivation?' or rather what is the resident's motivation
They're amazing. I can see why Devo and Talking Heads are fans of them.
HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED
Seeing young Homer Flynn is such a cool experience, he's changed so much and so little at the same time...
?
Homer Flynn always was a fictional character, he is just played by a Resident
Hh Lohmann huh?
Hh Lohmann what?
Hh Lohman always was a fictional character,
he is just played by a whatever he is."
"the Residents weren't a rock band
they were more of a noise collective."
No...more a rock band than most today...or any year, sir.
@@davidames1746 What led you to that conclusion?
I think it's rather ignorant to compare them to rock bands of today. That's like comparing an apple to a dog turd.
@@incumbentvinyl9291you dont get what rock is all about. Residents are more rock than anything before them or after them, sans maybe butthole surfers
@@whimreaper8603 Your reading comprehension is abysmal.
I’m so happy this exists
It picked up my mood right away.
Penn Jillette stuck in a hotel is one of my favorite albums. :-P
On the Ration | British Pathé 1009am 25.7.22 i just bet when those guys are being pretentious on stage and commenting on life's vicarious climaxes that one of the guys just wants to fart into the mic and walk off stage. that's about as much as the residents mean to me.
anyone else high and just are scared by this yet so fascinated
So nice to stumble into your posting, love the Res and Penn, once had a cassette tape of his review of the 4 days
Growing up in Louisiana, there were always Residents records around in the local shops (they were originally from the northern part of the state) in the late 70s. Not sure how we first got turned onto them, but it's been a hell of ride for the past 40+ years.
Truly appreciate their obsession of using eyeballs for heads!
Also Homer and Hardy have strong Southern accents
The Residents are the strangest thing to have come from the South since Bruce Hampton
Butthole surfers and flaming lips
And Batpussy
No. Only one of them has the southern accent.
I see and hear a lot of their influence on Tom Waits' stuff too.
I don’t know why but I hear The Residents in Butthole Surfers, Mr. Bungle and Swans at times also.
Thank you so much for preserving this!
God thinks we're absurd. That's why he sent The Residents.
The 80's and 90's. Glad I lived through them. There will never be another time like then.
80’s: 🙌🏼
90’s: 🫳🏻 eh
Thank you for uploading this.
Wow, what a great video! Thanks for uploading it.
On the Ration | British Pathé 1004am 25.7.22 a bit tedious of them to don those leggings over their faces as they attempted to rob that bank without cutting those leggings in half... which way now!!?, was the cry. i am thinking the constant hijacking of one hit musical wonders is gonna be for the worse, not the better.
Awesome! Thanks for posting.
Acid was a lot stronger in the 70's! The film has that claustrophobic peripheral element to it that one gets on higher doses of LSD. Brilliant work. I can remember listening to the Residents in the late 70s and 80s. Trippy stuff.
Frank! That movie reminded me of The Residents.
May I add my thanks to you for uploading this gem.
RIP Hardy.
Thank you for this!!!!!🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾
19:45 R.I.P. Hardy Fox. I hope you are a heaven's resident now.
Yes, along with Elvis Presley and Aaron Presley (Who I learned about from The King And Eye)
23:26 this has got to be their singer. I recognize that voice!
Maceta You’re correct. But no one should believe it.
Asi es: Homer Flynn es Randy, es el cantante de Los Residents!!!
Shhh! Don't give it away!
No real secret. Homer and Hardy Fox are noted on most stuff as the writers and producers of the lyrics.
Homer is the person behind the Pornographics moniker.
(In many spellings that Pornographics.)
Oh. And it's Tyrone now!
Homer Flynn has always been the primary singer although they have had several others sing for them from time to time.....notably Molly Harvey. Jay Clem and snake finger both sing when they were in the Rez. The guys from Renaldo and the Loaf have also lent vocals to different red songs over the years.
Im really diggin those eyeball billiards!good vid!
Real rock n roll
friggin awesome!!!
thank you for posting!!!!
Hardy Fox was actually a co-founder of the group.
likeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee a good gift on my birthday ..
Does anyone else hear a Residents influence in the music of Primus?
There is a more recent documentary called "Theory of Obscurity" and they touch on this subject exactly. Primus was filmed making his own statement addressing claims that he "ripped off" The Residents. Then it shows an early live recording of Primus performing what sounds to be an actual Residents song. I highly recommend watching it!
Yeah, in Primus’s 3 residents covers
The song "The Air is Getting Slippery" mentions the Residents. ..."me I'd rather play Residents cause I don't give a forgive me if I hesitate..."
Yep, they’ve covered residents songs 3 times. That’s how I found The Residents
Of course !!! And Les Claypool is a Genius !!!
Big fan many years🎉
The great thing about the eyeball is that the residents have never been the same band twice, but the is one constant, and it has 4 strings not 6.
Great video, thank you
I’m so lucky I wandered into that trailer park all those years ago was looking for weed and just walked into a shady park and a guy came out with a gun in his waste band and asked me what I wanted I ended up becoming friends with him and he showed me all the residents music it was 2003 or so I’m glad I met him
This is one of the great rock'n'roll stories 😂
Best live act ever as well!
Watch the film about the Residents called 'Theory of Obscurity' !
clever musicians, I have all their stuff. very collectable
Love prog rock and THIS art form. I have one in my left pocket and the other in my right. Thank you, Residents!
I think these characters are honestly cute
Yes they are, they have a lot of really cool/interesting clothes and characters
I saw them in Stockholm on the 13th anniversary tour..
I saw them in London on the 13th anniversary tour, I still have the poster :-)
Wow... This is fucking incredible !!!
I like how the only explain who Homer is the second time he appears. You just get this random guy popping on screen talking about newspapers.
28:25 - I have that blue shirt! Still wear it all the time.
RIP Hardy
The Residents live on the very knife edge of precariousness. So true was the statement that "You could cut the air with a knife" before the revealing expose of redundancy.
Banger
Somehow the Residents mock the Popmusic business scene, I would say, more than Frank Zappa ever mocked the Hippie movement
Gold medal,award winning weird!!!!!
I'm so confused
Thanx.
Their film reminds me of The Forbidden Zone
I've never seen this! Is it me, or did they kinda mess up the live "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's, Man's World"? Maybe it was a choice. Still killed!
My girlfriend got me 'The King and Eye' CD for Christmas in like 1992. I used to bring it over to her apartment for nights in. I knew she was getting adventurous when she asked me if I brought my "ELVIS CD"..then she'd turn off the tv, put on the CD, and climb into bed.
THAT is one of my all-time favorite LIFE memories!!! Getting down to The Residents because your girlfriend put on the CD that SHE got YOU for Christmas.
Good times.
Shreveport was probably a pretty boring town until these guys broke out.
The Rolling Stones had a sponge, but he died in a swimming pool !!!
Yes !!!

i was trying to find out who played N Senada in the WHTVFs video...was it Hardy Fox or was it Homer Flynn(2 me it looks more like Hardy Fox...but idk...cant find the IMDB listing..)...
According to Peggy Honeydew, it was Homer.
That show on 34:29 is really good🙂
4:06 this looks a lot like Tim burton and Monty Python
Except Burton as gone too commercial. Beetleguese was the first film I saw of his. A great movie and Edward Scissor hands.
He looks like Albert Brooks
It was Night Flight on the USA Channel in the early 80's where I was introduced to The Residents. Shortly after I bought their "greatest hits" compilation CD's Heaven and Hell. I never became more than a casual fan and their music could be very hit and miss. I love their Commercial Album and played the song Red Ryder over and over. Sadly I passed up an opportunity to see them live when they were performing after a screening of the documentary The Theory of Obscurity. I got to see the reconstruction of their unfinished film Vileness Fats on a late-night public access channel and thought it was like something you might dream while in throes of a very high fever. Hopefully the opportunity to see them will present itself in the foreseeable future, before a repressive right-wing regime deems them to be "deviate".
is this where "the doctor and the pencil" came from??
"The video tape footage looked dated"
Looks better than most films from 1972
They're from North Louisiana, or shall I say the original
There's a difference between the different groups of residents
For God s sake WHY!!!!!
JUST LOVE THE RESIDENTS!!!!!
4:25 who else thought it was a smart phone?
27:42 😂🤣😂🤣
I lived (born and raised) in the Bay Area in the 70's and I remember them coming on TV about 2 in the morning of the summer of '76... yea..... (even before Videowest)... strange daze in San Jose. It appears that they influenced Mr. Bungles and Primus... Clownish deconstructed avant-garde mash-up tech-rock (me and friends played in a Spock Jazz, 'my brain hurts' garage mash up band of rejects of the High School music room drop outs) Typical boy meets girl story.
What..
This is what real is like for so many of us. I know it is for me with my weird dysfunctional family including my blood famiky snd and my chosen family.
Like absurdly absurd.😂😂
The Rolling Stones are t-shirt salesmen. Buy their merch.
Their co-founder and composer/performer Hardy Fox at 23:44
Its a mans mans man's world James Brown bad it ri.
Wacky Fun!!!!!
Homer and Hardy are the residents
Shhhh first rule of knowing who the residents are is not telling anyone because it’s funner not knowing
I pretty sure this is not a secret at this point. Penn confirmed in his podcast that Fox was one. :-P
The Residents are God or Dog.😅😅
The U Certificate saying 'Suitable For All'.
Are you sure? Some of this music is... Unsettling.
Chill Bill
Ummm...maybe because the BAND didn't WANT it up? But with 'fans' like yourself who take ir upon themselves to do it who needs enemies??
I thought Penn Teller was a right wing demagogue. But hes truly weird if he enjoys the Residents.
He's a libertarian as far as I'm aware, which YES is actually different to a right winger lol. And his name is Penn Jillette, Teller is the silent guy next to Penn.
So their gimmick is that theyre bad at music
Nah.. 43:01
I'm still have a question about their satyr :The third Reich of rock'n roll.
