i’m not sure if this was an intention but another interpretation of that tree is the barks natural maze/labrynth-like pattern which end up being a plot device in the story
The second time I saw the movie I realised that that's why it was there and I was surprised you didn't mention in the video. But yeah the second time round I was scared as heck when I saw that tree haha. I had actually remembered it from the first time because it was so weird, but it hadn't dawned on me until I saw it again.
@@lamontmcleod2 the truth is I dont think the tree has any deeper meaning - if you listen to people in BTS talk about it, it was simply something Denis decided to get on the day while shooting. It was never planned etc - I actually just think they needed something to transition from Thanksgiving to the arrest so it wasn't such a jarring cut and so it was just an easy shot to cut to. Another filmmaker would have used an aerial drone shot for the same effect. We can all over analyze it but Im almost certain it's nothing.
@@impatrickt I'm not saying it was a deliberate PLANNED shot; I did hear you say that he just decided to shoot it while he was there but it could have been a part of the decision to actually have it it in the edit. I think there's no way Dennis didn't notice the resemblance to the labyrinth. When you think about how much thought goes into his films and how well he would know his shotlist and everything, I think when they were looking at all the footage he was like "That tree is kind of like the key to the mystery..."
@@lamontmcleod2 yeah I think it was simpler than that or else he could have also conveyed that to his DP to make sure he was capturing what he meant. He just said "shoot this tree" LOL if there was meaning it would have been communicated on set, don't you think? I don't see the resemblance to the maze either.
Prisoners was the second Villeneuve film I had seen (Arrival being my intro), and I started to realize, “This is a horror movie.” Villeneuve is SO good at creepiness and tension, from the Kubrickian feel of Enemy, the extreme tension of Sicario, the slow buildup of weirdness in BR2049, to the multitude of disturbing elements in Dune (not to mention the epic and horrifying tragedy of Incendies), I REALLY want a Villeneuve/Deakins horror movie.
I see a lot more of you on Twitter, but man this was a great piece. Salutations from astonishingly wet, ominous & oddly back to normal Ireland! ☘💪🏽👀👍🏽☘s
That’s one of the best aspects of Denis Villenueve’s direction because it shows how brilliant of a visual storyteller he is. I’m such a fan of his, I can’t wait for Dune: Part Two. Great essay Patrick! I’m looking forward to seeing your short film.🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥
I re-watched Prisoners again recently at the prompting of a friend. Such a great movie. For me, the thing profound about that tree shot is not really the push in, as much as it is the stop at the end of that push in. Precise movement as you said. Love it.
Just rewatched for the 50th time and had this exact thought. Came here to see if anyone mentioned it. Hell yeah. The shot wouldn’t be as powerful if they cut away while still pushing in.
Such an interesting breakdown of this shot, and inserts shots generally. Loved the short, too! Crazy how composition, lighting, and sound design can create a feeling.
Something I love about that collection of inserts you did is the the fact that your cinematography never looks like anything you see in most “cinematography explained” videos on youtube. I mean that whenever I watch videos like those, it always looks like something you’d see in a commercial, not in an actual film. Your cinematography always has a distinct feel to it that’s never artificial, and looks like it could be taken out of a high budget production. Keep it up!👍
BTW, this was perfect timing because last week I went to film a mini documentary, part of it was at a rock climbing gym but with short time I only did A roll and did not get any chance to do insert shots .. this was a great reminder and I plan on getting back there soon to just shoot them and help me set the mood. Bravo for the essays .. keep them coming. They are different from the usual product review.
Your short of the inserts was fantastic. Really enjoyed it. Music choice was spot on. Great video essay as well; lots for me to think about on the next shoot. Thanks
