    Villeneuve + Deakins is the best combination in movie history. Nearly every shot in their movies is a work of art.

    i’m not sure if this was an intention but another interpretation of that tree is the barks natural maze/labrynth-like pattern which end up being a plot device in the story

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      FUCK YEAH love that. realizing that nobody else in the crew had any idea why Denis shot that tree that day makes it even more fascinating to me.

    • @lamontmcleod2
      @lamontmcleod2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The second time I saw the movie I realised that that's why it was there and I was surprised you didn't mention in the video. But yeah the second time round I was scared as heck when I saw that tree haha. I had actually remembered it from the first time because it was so weird, but it hadn't dawned on me until I saw it again.

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@lamontmcleod2 the truth is I dont think the tree has any deeper meaning - if you listen to people in BTS talk about it, it was simply something Denis decided to get on the day while shooting. It was never planned etc - I actually just think they needed something to transition from Thanksgiving to the arrest so it wasn't such a jarring cut and so it was just an easy shot to cut to. Another filmmaker would have used an aerial drone shot for the same effect. We can all over analyze it but Im almost certain it's nothing.

    • @lamontmcleod2
      @lamontmcleod2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@impatrickt I'm not saying it was a deliberate PLANNED shot; I did hear you say that he just decided to shoot it while he was there but it could have been a part of the decision to actually have it it in the edit. I think there's no way Dennis didn't notice the resemblance to the labyrinth. When you think about how much thought goes into his films and how well he would know his shotlist and everything, I think when they were looking at all the footage he was like "That tree is kind of like the key to the mystery..."

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lamontmcleod2 yeah I think it was simpler than that or else he could have also conveyed that to his DP to make sure he was capturing what he meant. He just said "shoot this tree" LOL if there was meaning it would have been communicated on set, don't you think? I don't see the resemblance to the maze either.

    Prisoners was the second Villeneuve film I had seen (Arrival being my intro), and I started to realize, “This is a horror movie.” Villeneuve is SO good at creepiness and tension, from the Kubrickian feel of Enemy, the extreme tension of Sicario, the slow buildup of weirdness in BR2049, to the multitude of disturbing elements in Dune (not to mention the epic and horrifying tragedy of Incendies), I REALLY want a Villeneuve/Deakins horror movie.

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      funny you say that because an earlier script of this video was "Why Prisoners Is A Horror Movie"

    I re-watched Prisoners again recently at the prompting of a friend. Such a great movie. For me, the thing profound about that tree shot is not really the push in, as much as it is the stop at the end of that push in. Precise movement as you said. Love it.

    Something I love about that collection of inserts you did is the the fact that your cinematography never looks like anything you see in most “cinematography explained” videos on youtube. I mean that whenever I watch videos like those, it always looks like something you’d see in a commercial, not in an actual film. Your cinematography always has a distinct feel to it that’s never artificial, and looks like it could be taken out of a high budget production. Keep it up!👍

Bravo for the essays .. keep them coming. They are different from the usual product review.

    Looking back on my first short film, one of the biggest things I wish I'd done differently was to take a day to just shoot a crap load of insert shots. Would have made my cinematography much more nuanced than just action and dialogue scenes. Not a mistake I'll be making twice.

    • @impatrickt
      @impatrickt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I saw this picture in theatres and this shot captivated me. It seemed so off kilter, almost out of place, in that it interrupted the rhythm up until that point but it never took me out the story. In fact it pulled me in. It's the must memorable frame is the picture, for me. I read an interview with Deakins, I think, and he said the idea behind the shot was that Denis had this thought about trees as being these silent witnesses to the things that happen in life.
    Either way it has stayed with me and it's interesting to see it's effect on others.

    many moons ago there used to be a company called "Anderson" here in LA and all they (he) did was do all the insert shots for all the TV shows and some features. Back then shows like 24, X files, NYPD blues would have 3-4 units running, 16-20 hour days... crazy enough they didn't have time for inserts, no time to do them right anyway. Anderson was the director/DP and owned the company, the cameras, grip , electric etc. one man machine, very efficient. we would come in and they would hand us a (huge) list of inserts with a short clip of the shot it went with and we would go shot by shot. Anderson never approached this the way you'd think a guy in his postion would...he didnt "assembly line" it... he cared to make the insert work for the shot, no matter how short the insert was or how long out list of inserts was for the day. he would create elaborate dolly shots, jibs shots, compound moves and light it til it was right and served the shot...even if it was a dumb insert of a computer screen of the letters someone was typing ... during the two years I worked with him I learned A TON about how an insert can mean so much more if it needs to . he has since folded/retired.. the nature of how things are shot now in digital makes it too easy to get inserts done in a hurry... and why they just don’t take the time anymore, on network TV shows anyway, obviously a good filmmaker will always respect doing these right.

    A long time ago I shot a 16mm short student film and the cameraman, bored while waiting for the actor, filmed a shot of the Moon in the sky. Later during editing I decided to use that shot in the movie as a way to link two sequences together; a lot of people talked about that Moon shot, it became something poetic and meaningful almost by accident.

    Loved your video. But I will say that the tree also carries a large amount of metaphorical significance. It's an allusion to the tree of life, an archetypal symbol closely related to that of a maze or labyrinth. The story is about how some (like Loki) find their way through that labyrinth and escape it, while others (Keller, Holy Jones, Alex, and Bobby Taylor) are perpetually trapped in its psychological darkness due to unresolved trauma. Loki is the only one that has acknowledged, faced, and resolved this trauma and it allows him to re-enter the maze, save the girl, and solve the crime :)

      is it or does it just look cool? because from the BTS it sounds like it's just something he decided to grab on a whim. it's easy to find deep meaning in stuff but often.. it's just simply because it looks cool and helps pace out the film.

      @@impatrickt I'd agree that it was something they filmed on a whim, but maybe subconsciously that was something they were inclined to do? Not too sure on how intentional it was in the grand scheme of the film's theme. I will say that this film spends an extraordinary amount of time on shots of trees, and from what I understand many of them are intentional. When Keller is hunting, his vision is obstructed by thick trees. Alex Jones, a prisoner of the maze runs his car into a tree. The shots of the CSI team focus a lot on trees. Alex is imprisoned in a wooden box. When Joy Birch escapes Holy Jones we see a shot of the branches of a tree. When Keller is trapped underground he's surrounded by roots. If you think of the roots of the tree of life as the underworld, the trunk as the perilous journey we take through life, and the tops of the tree as self-individualization, the focus on trees in this film makes a lot of sense :)

      @@FOURBEEZ no I know I dont even know if I agree with my take either - it's looking for meaning in something that might not even exist BUT that's what also makes it so great. it could just be a dumb tree OR more.

    You say “Inserts” has no narrative and/or plot yet paired with that chosen score I was able to construct one. I think that is why I love these shots. To me, visual mediums should NEVER be passive but always engaging our minds while we watch the story unfold. The concept of show-don’t-tell is the most advantageous tool because nothing beats our own creativity. My idea of a good visual artist is someone who finds that balance between exposition and insert shot; a storyteller that invites us to participate by stimulating our imagination. Thank-you for another good video, Patrick.

      No I said inserts are usually plot and narrative driven but they don’t have to be (how Denis uses them sometimes) so it’s a reminder to try and go by gut and feeling rather than trying to be practical!

    The tree shot made me feel like someone is lurking behind the trees watching the house. Not really a POV shot but something like it.

    The tree shot is what hooked my attention for the movie. I was already invested, but when they took the time to insert the shot of a tree, that's when it had my full attention. That's when I started to notice how great the cinematography of this movie was. I hopped on IMDb to find it was Deakins, and I was not surprised! Great movie!!!
