Hi Sandy, a tip for centering the hold in the tubes: After assembling the extruder (including the clay, extruder core adapters and extruder disc), tighten the cap holding the disc and adapter almost but not quite all the way. (Try tightening the cap all the way and then unscrewing it just a little - maybe 1/4 of a turn.) You want the cap to be tighten enough so the disc and core adapter can't move on their own; you also need a tiny bit of "play" to allow you to gently nudge the shaped extruder disc with the tip of a needle tool to get the disc perfectly centered around the "nose" of the clay core adapter. As soon as the disc is centered around the clay core adapter, finish tightening the cap. Hope that helps!
Regarding the "push" type extruder; i took two 2×4s about 21/2 feet long and joined them with a piano hinge. I then drilled a hole to fit the extruder barrel about 8 or 10 inches from the hinge on one of the 2×4s. Place extruder through the hole with the head of the plunger resting on the inside of the other 2×4 then press steadily and firmly on the end of the upper 2×4 and watch the clay come shooting out! Keep in mind that the discs that come with that type are thinner and not as sturdy as say a makins extruder but this is a way to use the cheapo kind if you're stuck with one!😊
I have a tip for the thumb push extruder. I warm the clay and the extruder with my body heat. Then I put the extruder on the floor pusher-side down and step on the T bar with both feet. The clay comes shooting out.
I bought these long ago but haven't got around to using them. Thanks for this, much appreciated! You are so clever Sandy! I'm one of those who needs to buy everything and then wonders what to do with it all.
I’m laughing because I, too, buy things I simply MUST have after reading about/seeing videos of them, and then they arrive, I think “What the heck did I get this for?” and the next thing I know, I have piles of things I haven’t tried yet as am not even sure what they do anymore. At the time I ordered them, though, they were oh, so very important! 😆 I’m relieved it’s not just me. 😘
Really awesome ideas 😊🤗 never thought of using it to make the cords for necklaces or bracelets ☺️ super cool! Thanx for all the videos you do they are always helpful and full of great ideas 🤗 keep up the good work!
thanks sandy, i have all these tools, and i have extruded cores to use as tube beads, but these are such good ideas i just had not thought of. thanks again, for making my brain dance!!
That looks like fun! How does it stay flexible after baking? Is it the type of clay you use? Tks for all of the education i’ve gotten from your videos.
What an excellently put together, informative video. I am yet to try my LC XXL Czextruder, but you just made me go WOW! I am now subscribed. Thank you Sandy! ☺️
Hi Sandy,, I used to have an extruder that you push the clay through, NO more!!!! I got a lovely rose gold clay extruder with the bar on the end for cranking out the clay, the other one used to make my thumbs and fingers hurt,,,but love this new idea,,how many times have we tryed to put a hole in a bead and find as carefully as we are it distorts,, this is a great idea,, for making beads, with the holes,,made to measure,!!! A bracelet and necklace to match, making beads with this this adapter core, is awesome cool,,have a great weekend Sandy🌹🌺🌹🌺🍁👍
Erm, yes... It IS expensive. :-D I love it, though. Buying good tools whenever possible is something I strongly believe in. Do I have ALL the best tools? No. But some, here and there, when I can. A link to that one, and a few other choices, is at my blog post.
Your right the extruder is expensive,,, would love it but will have to wait, its great that its mounted on to a board, makes it easer to control, thankyou again Sandy,🌹🌺🌹🌺🍁👍🐱🐈
It is really nice design, which is why I bought it at a bead show a few years ago. I’ve studied it a few times and thought of making my own version, but of course it wouldn’t be ethical to copy hers and then teach it to others.
I have the Makins extruder what type of clay did you use so it was flexible I use mainly sculpey III liked the ideal of running the bead wire through there
I doubt it. Sculpey III is not known for being particularly strong or flexible. If you want to read a good article about the qualities of the different brands, check out what Ginger at the Blue Bottle Tree has to say about it: thebluebottletree.com/best-polymer-clay-brand/
Hi Sandy, Im new at your channel. I'hv got Makin's ClayCore extruder adapter. I have a problem. The claycore adapter doesn't fit in the barrel and as a result the bottom cap cannot be screwed all the way down. I think this will damage the extruder, right? Should I buy a similar extruder brand? :) Thank you in advance for your advice.
Sandy, did I understand you correctly that someone (Marie Segal, I think) mixes Mold Maker (or similar) into her polymer? (I’m assuming you meant a silicone substance.) Is that right? I’ve never heard that before, and am thinking that’s an important experiment I might try right now! Here I’d been using translucent to make things more flexible; it never occurred to me to try an entirely different substance. I own an awful lotta Blue Tack (besides all the usual uses, I use it for earplugs here in noisy New York City), and I think I’m gonna be trying to mix it with polymer this afternoon.
Hi Binky, I think Mold Maker is NOT a silicone, like Easy Mold, but a softer form of polymer clay. I'm not certain, as I've never used it. Mixing something like Easy Mold with polymer clay will either be the next, most brilliant thing ever.... or a complete disaster. I'm fascinated and can't wait to hear about the results. :-0 Not sure about Blu-Tak and how it will bake. It might melt in the oven, but, hey, experiment! Let us know about the results of that one, too. :-D Yes, I get a lot of comments about how cool the name Huntress is. Sadly, hubby & his brothers mention being made fun of for it when they were younger. My son was given a hard time in the military for it. :( Personally I always feel like I'm lisping, because my name begins and ends with an "s". Also, spelling it on the phone? Forget it. People stop listening after the "t." I'll say H-U-N-T-R-E-S-S and they'll say, "Oh, Hunter!" Grrrr..... Lol All that aside, I do kind of like it. And the family I married into. :-D
Argh. That’s happened before, that I mistook “Easy Mold” for a product that allows one to easily make molds. Silly me! 😕 (I’m nominating it for a “Badly-Named Product” award.) So thinking that Blu Tack is silicone, I took a lump of Premo, split it in half, and mixed one half 50/50 with some Blu Tack. I then rolled that and the Premo-only lump into a longish rectangle and cured ‘em for an hour. When they were cool, I attempted to bend each in half. The piece that was just Premo bent and didn’t crack. The half-Blu Taxk piece snapped at just a 60° bend. 😳 That was weird; I’d expected it to be extra flexy. Huh. Bt then I looked up the composition of BluTack and it turns out it’s actually a form of rubber. Derp; I hadn’t known that. Shoulda looked before trying the test, but then I’ve never been known for thinking things through before leaping. (I wanna do a second test in which I cure ‘em for just the prescribed 20 minutes; it’s entirely possible that I simply destroyed the rubber by curing as long as I did. I’ll report the results of that one, too.) So I’d still like to do a test in which I mix polymer with some silicone, but I can’t think *what* silicone. Ideally, it’ll be something handy I already own as I’m largely housebound and in totally broke, as I live well below the poverty level.) (I’m a disabled vet, and polymer uses up what little disposable income I get.) I’ve been wracking my brain and the best I can come up with is silicone caulk. I think I’ll mix a dollop of it with some Premo, see whether that’s workable? It’s not the ideal mix as it’ll stick to my hands like crazy, but I can’t think what else to do. Have you a better idea, Sandy? I’m up for doing the testing if I can come up with a silicone substance that’ll readily mix into the polymer. (Or *not* mix into it; this is, after all, a test of whether silicone will add any extra flexibility and durability to polymer. If it won’t successfully mix, then we’ll have our answer!) I hadn’t even considered the name “Huntress” on men, but you know what? Women have walked around *forever* wearing men’s names (Forman, Freeman, Millman, etc) that men can hardly complain about having a “girly” name, now can they? It also made me wonder why people don’t massage their surnames according to their desires. For example, in your own family, the women can use “Huntress” and the men “Hunter” if they desire. Why not? (Though in thinking about it, I’m hard-pressed to think of names which lend themselves to that kinda flexibility.) A lotta folks enjoy sharing a name so I can see why they might be resistant to the idea, but rather than feeling a little embarrassment when dopes make fun of their names, there’s nothing stopping ‘em from using the “male” form of the name, right? … unless they secretly enjoy the name. ☺️ Lemme know whether you can think of a better idea than silicone caulk (I wish I had some silicone oil right about now!) and I’ll try it, kay? (Oooh; I just remembered I have a silicone lubricant. I need to check, see whether it’s just a lubricant for silicone, or whether it’s a lubricant made of silicone. If the latter, maybe I’ll try that, as it’s not gonna stick to my hands the way the caulk will.) (Heck; I might try ‘em both if silicone lube turns out to be made of silicone.) I’ll watch this space in case you reply. Oh! Better yet, if you don’t mind, you can email me at “binkstress” on Google’s email platform. That way, I won’t hafta hunt for your reply the way I did for this one. (If you mind and would rather communicate here, no problem! I can hunt.)
I would ,ove to see a tutorial or demo on how you made the square pendant with the round holes. It's green and the top holes are purple, and it is shown on the core adapter tutorial? Thanks in advance.
I'm glad you like it, Ida, but as I mention in the video description, I didn't make it. It was created by polymer clay artist Seana Bettencourt. thepolymergarden.com
Hi Sandy. I recently bought a Makins extruder and three core makers came with it. I found out what they did but hadn’t realised you could use them in conjunction with all different shapes, so thanks for the tip! I use Fimo clay so I suspect any tubes I make wouldn’t be as flexible as with premo. Would you agree or does it depend on the length of baking time? I’ve only ever baked Fimo for 30 mins, as stated on the packet. Would that make a difference do you think? Many thanks. 😀
Some brands of clay simply aren't ever going to be as flexible as others. You probably should do some testing to see what results you'll get. When the clay comes out of my extruder it has cracks as if it will break, even though I condition the clay for several minutes with my hands and pasta machine, why is this?
I think this video by Ana Belchi will answer your question. th-cam.com/video/eh3FaolGmDs/w-d-xo.html&feature=shares She has excellent English captions, btw.
I love the things you can do with an extruder, but my hands are getting weaker and I wonder if it makes it much harder to push your clay out through the core adaptor?
It might make it harder. The crank style extruders definitely make things easier. If you don't have a base to hold yours (like mine in the video) you can clamp it in a vise, then crank. This will heat up and ruin your rubber "O" rings fairly quickly, but you can buy packages of those at home supply stores.
Keepsake Crafts by Sandy Huntress I have a Fimo extruder, I believe it is the same as Walnut Hollow, with a crank, but I can really battle with it. I think I will try a vise. Thank you for your advice!
I like to use one of my chisel shaped soft rubber clay tools to clean the ClayCore. The larger ones wont work in my green extruder too. 1-13-22 Contact Makins if yours don't fit. They sent me another set

I have been using Premo in white. Initially, the clay seemed a little sticky and seemed to collapse, so I put it on a piece of paper for awhile, reconditioned it on pasta machine and it still came out thin and collapsed.
White is known to be one of the softest colors. Give it a try with some black and see if you have better results. I haven't tried the clay core extruder with any other color but black.
Did not know these existed.. shopping. Thanks Sandy
They open up a whole new world of possibilities!

They were made for pottery clay - they're perfect for that 🙂

That looks like fun! How does it stay flexible after baking? Is it the type of clay you use? Tks for all of the education i’ve gotten from your videos.
Gloria, any good brand of polymer clay, if baked properly, will be flexible after baking. Some brands are more flexible than others.
What an excellently put together, informative video. I am yet to try my LC XXL Czextruder, but you just made me go WOW! I am now subscribed. Thank you Sandy! ☺️

Keepsake Crafts by Sandy Huntress Thanks Sandy, I think I may just do exactly that...now! ❤️

Sandy, I have found that the force of the clay pushing through two discs makes the clay so thin that the holes collapse. What am I doing wrong?
Hope
What brand of clay are you using, Hope?

What can I do with extruder adapter 3.5, 4, and 4.5 mm.? This is just what I have...
I'd suggest getting out some clay, choose a few of your extruder discs and just experiment!
Do you have a link to where I could get some of these extruder adapters

'shades of clay' have them....shadesofclay.com/ and more!
are polymer clay extruders dishwasher safe?
If it's a metal extruder, then sure, you can put it in the dishwasher. However, I seriously doubt the dishwasher will remove the clay.
I have been using Premo in white. Initially, the clay seemed a little sticky and seemed to collapse, so I put it on a piece of paper for awhile, reconditioned it on pasta machine and it still came out thin and collapsed.
