The last days of summer: harvesting and preserving [Slow Living in August]

  • Slow living in August. The last few weeks of summer before the start of Autumn. The boys are at home so we spend time harvesting the fruit and vegetables from the potager. Rebecca makes an easy, fermented tomato salsa and freezes some of our egg glut to preserve them. We also set-up at our first vide grenier - not entirely a success. Plus, we finally properly introduce you to the chickens!

    Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a young family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns. We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible!
    We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way. When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.
    As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.
    Join us on our journey!

      I just watched the video and was just about to comment on this, the easiest way to fix this is to just crush up the eggshels and keep in the chickencoop, or lightly dust on some feed (keep two feedingstations for this, on dusted and one without) 🙂

      We fed our hens Kale leaves throughout the Summer. We're hoping 🙏 this prevents deficiencies. We are buying some egg laying crumble to supplement the kitchen scraps and used micro-greens mats that we'll feed them over the Winter.

    Fragile shells can be a case of not enough calcium just start saving all your shells crush them up very finely and mix them in with the chicken feed you definitely don't want it to look like an eggshell though they'll figure out they like it and start picking the eggs

    Ah La Rentrée, what a milestone for your young lad! Lovely weavings I've seen you making! Good luck with the studios. Am I correct, Brook is a ceramicist/potter? I am a lapsed potter but my great joy in it was the contact with the earth I felt with the clay and the almost meditative state required to be centered first in yourself before centering the clay.

    • @LivingintheLoire
      @LivingintheLoire  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, also lapsed since boys were born and moving here but starting again now. I have been trying on and off with some old clay but it's gone very sticky and I'm not having a good time with it, any suggestions? Otherwise I'll just pick up some new stuff with a bit of grog. Making something from a ball of mud, doesn't get any better, right? :)

    • @paulbonge6617
      @paulbonge6617 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LivingintheLoire Ok, third time lucky or it's not meant to be! Much abbreviated version now. Clay not rehydrating no matter what you try and still problematic? Fix a hole where the rain gets in, toss it in the skip or put it in a pile in the yard and make a freeform hand molded sculpture that slowly erodes by rain and wind reuniting earth with earth. The boys will have fun helping you squeeze and squish any forms that come to mind. Ah, father/sons bonding.
      Anyway, both my previous attempts seem to have disappeared as they do sometimes. I'm reminded of someone while watching a few of your videos and you're confessional, again quite brave and honest and commendable. One M.C. Richards. A potter and a poet and philosopher. Steiner educator, English teacher and friend of my father who had been at Black Mountain College in the 40's when she was teaching there. These two videos are excerpts from a longer biographical documentary "The Fire Within" available on Amazon, yet for a rather high price. th-cam.com/video/akh6enU6Gds/w-d-xo.html
      And the other quite inspirational, on living at the crossing point of the practical world and the ethereal one of ideas, dreams and artistic expression, the basis of her entire life of living a human based communal life of biodynamic agriculture and gardening. Something your family is beginning now. th-cam.com/video/k2ZEygS079o/w-d-xo.html

      A lot of hens stop laying or at least slow down their production over winter to give their bodies a break. This way you have eggs stored from when they were laying lots to see you through. If you don't have your own hens then, no, you're probably not going to be freezing any as you'll just buy as and when you need.

      Yes a DJI Mini 2, in my opinion you don't need anything more advanced if it's just for fun or TH-cam. That's very kind. We hope to share in our future films the path that led us to this point.

    You both took on a huge task but you did it and it is very inspiring. You are both so versatile and had a go at doing everything, and it turned out so well! You deserve all the success for your courage and hard work, I also loved the music you chose for this whole series, thank you for sharing your journey!

      @@LivingintheLoire Thanks, I chose it because I love looking up at our skies at night and imagining the many worlds out there yet to be discovered! Your love for our planet is very clear and your children are going to grow up with so much love for her too. If folks put in the hard work, like you have done, the rewards are incredible and it is all there just waiting to be tapped. You have inspired me to look at living in France as I was planning to return to UK but now, I am thinking of France or Italy as I have ancestral ties to both! So grateful for sharing your journey, thank you!

      This country is like a sleeping giant. It has everything. Beaches, mountains, rural historic beauty to vibrant cities. Public places are well maintained. In rural communities markets are encouraged. There's no chains like Starbucks or Pret a Manger, so the local economy is more fluid as a result. Best of luck.

    Just discovered your channel earlier today and am all caught up now. I hope you will avail yourselves of outside supporters however that works. I subscribe and support a few other channels who are living lives I would love. Several aspects of your life appeal to me being a historical restoration carpenter and occasional gardener here in Texas, formerly California. You seem to be coping with the many challenges quite well and I want to cheer you on to continued success. I used that weedless method of placing cardboard on the ground and it worked great for me too. I wonder if you know the history of your property, that would be interesting to me. You are lovely people thank you for sharing your lives.

      We have had a bit of an upsurge in viewers recently and we're just working out what works best for us. We will probably have a website very soon) with additional films and written blogs. It'll be free but if you enjoy you're welcome to donate and offer words of wisdom, especially if you're carpenter! Something I really struggle with, zero education or mentorship. So any guidance is welcome. Thanks for the comments Scott.
