I agree with you. Spearfish Canyon is one of the most spectacular rides in the Black Hills and easy enough for any rider. The only downside is the heavy tourist traffic in the peak summer months, especially during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The best time to ride there is coming up in late September when the weather is great and the aspen begin to turn on their colors. If you are an adv rider or other trail rider, or even someone in a reasonably competent car, you can also ride the gravel road from Savoy up past Rough Lock Falls to some spectacular fall colors above the canyon.
Many riders who live here don't ride much during Rally Week because there are too many bikes on the road. Hint, if you just want to ride and are not particularly interested in Rally events, late August and the whole month of September are usually the best time to ride ... warm days, cool nights and this is the "dry season".
Sturgis rally week doubles the number of occupants of the sate, and the Black Hills have several National Monuments and the like which attract lots of tourists in the summer.
Will have to try that road next time. Looks great! I didn't make it to the rally this year.
The Spearfish Scenic Byway is another good one. It probably falls much closer to Vanocker in its level of driver challenge than to Iron Mountain.
