My mom's 87 year old twin sister had a Shih Tzu. She died recently, and no one wanted the little dog so she is now part of my family of three dogs, one chihuahua and Min Pin. Took her home but found out she has not been vetted in five years according to Vet records. To make a long story short, she was in the worse shape, matted terribly from not being groomed and fleas, lots of fleas. She's now been groomed, fleas dealt with. Now to the emotional part. She's grieving terribly. But she seems to have a liking for my mom, I think, because mom looks like her previous owner. Only time will heal this little girl.

My dog went to my parents & as a puppy he was loved most by my mother. Yet he knew that my dad would take him for walks & would help him too. If I visited he knew I alway brought over a new toy or had a biscuit for him. He knew my mother would feed him & if he lost her in the house he needed to search to find the room she was in. He would never eat food unless my mother handed it to him but he came looking for company to anyone with a toy in his mouth.

My Tzu is 6 years old. I am her favorite person but when hubby comes home from work, she gets excited and follows him around the house. In winter, if he is covered up on sofa, she will jump down from me to go to him. She has a deep relationship with both of us. She shares her love. My husband feels love from her. He feels special, but I am her favorite. We both showed her our love.

I am a cat person, but my girlfriend got a Shih Tzu without me knowing… a commitment for both of us with only one person deciding is not a good start… but a funny thing happened - I fell in love with the dog as soon as she looked up at me 😍and in return the dog created a really strong bond with me.
My gf works all day on a computer, hugs and cares for the dog health wise… but I am the one that walks the dog regularly and hunts through the woodland for interesting smells for her nose (deer scrapes, fox runs, rabbits, rats holes ect) I set limits and train her daily.
So somehow she regards me as Alpha for outdoor pursuits, daily walking adventures and my gf as comfort. Though recently I have had to placate my gf’s jealousy that doggo has started to prefer sleeping next to me…
The Doggy has trained well for me, but does not adhere to commands to stay or come, from my gf… almost as if these rules apply when dealing with me but anything goes with my gf.
    I guess the upshot is…
… treat them as dogs not babies
… set rules and be consistent it’s not control freakery, they love structure and leadership
… and walk them new places with new smells… that nose is more important to entertain than sight.
… and you are alpha and anything other is hard work for you…
I know nothing about dogs, but it is just my experience of one… now cats… that’s a different matter… they are Alpha… and one must serve! 😂

I think Shih Tzus are Persian cats in disguise...at least, based on my Chester's looks and behavior.

When I got married 50 years ago, my husband did not think much of dogs, believing they should live outside and I was against that so we never had a dog. Then one day I was seeing all these puppies of Tzus on the internet and they were so adorable. I bought one from a breeder who shows Shih Tzus. Naturally, if the puppy does not meet up to Tzu standards, she sells them and they are still not cheap. I saw no issue and had her vetted when I got her. My husband kind of liked her face. She grew on him and now he loves her like I do. SusieQ tends to share her love, keeping us both happy, but I am the person she wants to sleep with and is not happy until I come home. These are the best dogs. I just cannot believe hubby and I fight over her all the time. I do not want another Tzu until the terrible event when she passes. I know we will both get hit hard.

One of our Shih Tzus was like as described here but the other (male) seems to have overwhelming attraction for women and is constantly glued to my wife. She has never done anything but talk baby talk to it.

Nice to see so many matts on these dogs. It is very hard to keep a lot of their undercoat from becoming tangled. Totally agree with what is said here, except the breed is a SheeZ ztu. They are not shit. LOL
