Lyrics:
-
The time has scarce gone round, boys
Three hundred years ago
When rebels on old Derry’s walls
Their faces dare not show
When James and all his rebel band
Came up to Bishop’s Gate
With heart and hand and sword and shield
We forced him to retreat
We’ll fight and don’t surrender
But come when duty calls
With heart and hand and sword and shield
We’ll guard old Derry’s walls
When blood did flow in crimson streams
Through many a winter’s night
They knew the Lord was on their side
To help them in their fight
They nobly stood up on the walls
Determined for to fight
To fight and gain the victory
And raise the crimson high
We’ll fight and don’t surrender
But come when duty calls
With heart and hand and sword and shield
We’ll guard old Derry’s walls
At last, at last with one broadside
Kind heaven sent them aid
The boom that crossed the Foyle was broke
And James, he was dismayed
The banner boys that floated
Was run aloft with joy
God bless the hands that broke the boom
And saved the apprentice boys
We’ll fight and don’t surrender
But come when duty calls
With heart and hand and sword and shield
We’ll guard old Derry’s walls

Weren't the supporters of William the actual rebels here? Considering how legally James was still King of Ireland, as the Irish parliament hadn't declared for William at the time.
The time the song was written the Catholics would of been rebles
@@micahritchie9179 No, the Parliament of Ireland had remained loyal to the Stuart's and declared James to still be King, which made the supporters of William the rebels
@@user-ys5yv2nz6w fair enough
Well it depends on your definition of rebel. William was given the title of King of the three kingdoms (including Ireland) by Parliament due to him fleeing to France. Essentially vacating the crown of the three Kingdoms. During that times Ireland’s loyalty was split: with the Gaelic and Old English siding with James and the New English and Ulster Planters siding primarily with William. It was a loop were both sides thought themselves right, and thought the opposing side to be rebels.
@@user-ys5yv2nz6w The british Parliament invited King William and refused to recognise James' legitimacy. As for the Irish Parliament, there wasn't one. Ireland was run by London
Nice song, never mind the politics. Same tune as God Bless the Prince of Wales!
