- Reseña (info extraída de Rotten Tomatoes):
"The fascinating story of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth is recounted in this British made-for-TV effort. It all begins in 1920, when the then-Duke of York Albert (James Wilby), known affectionately as Bertie, meets and falls in love with the aristocratic, 19-year-old Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Juliet Aubrey). Although their marriage makes international headlines, the mild, unprepossessing Bertie knows that he will always play second fiddle to his dashing older brother, the Prince of Wales, in the hearts and minds of the British people. This is never more true than when Bertie's brother ascends to the throne as King Edward VIII in 1936. That same year, however, the new King abdicates so that he may marry the woman of his choice, thereby thrusting the reluctant Bertie into the limelight as Monarch of the British Isles. Spurred on by the love and devotion of his lifelong helpmate Elizabeth, Bertie -- now King George -- proves more than worthy of his new burdens and responsibilities, especially during the darkest days of WWII. Although the King passes on in 1952 (a death hastened by his fondness for tobacco), Elizabeth lives well past the century mark, beloved by her subjects as the mother of the future Queen Elizabeth II and the impulsive Princess Margaret. A co-production of Carlton Television and PBS, Bertie and Elizabeth was telecast in America as part of the Masterpiece Theater anthology on February 4, 2002."

How fortuitous that Edward had the sense to leave. Who can imagine the Second World War with Britain led by a traitor who colluded with Hitler and nearly got away with it.
He didn’t get away with it, but his uncle Dickie did ... although the IRA sank him later on down the line.
Indeed!
41:28 to 42:02 The ultimate royal put-down, "We came to dine with the King."
In the end, a better king replaced a selfish king.
When I was growing up in LONG ISLAND, NY and always loved history to this day a neighbor on our block fought with Monte in the 8th Army "The Desert Rats" in North Africa.
Thank you for posting this really good Masterpiece Theatre. Still watch Masterpiece Theatre for over 50 yrs.
16:55 Elizabeth Bowes Lyon is very fortunate. Despite being a "commoner" (she does come from a family in good standing but she's no royalty), the Queen is very fond of her, the King approves of her, they both adored their grandchildren and even the King would rather see Lilibet to the throne despite being a girl
I never quite understood her being called a commoner. Her father was literally was the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. That's Scotland nobility he may have not had Duke Prince, but he was a legitimate Early Castle and all.
George the 5th was an astute judge of character; he was used to speaking to politicians and Lords from all parties, to press barons and to captains of industry etc.
He clearly saw something in his younger son, George the Sixth, his wife and their daughter, that was clearly lacking in Edward (or David as he liked to be known). For one thing, Edward was in his forties and still chasing twice-married Wallis whilst the old King was still alive, and who was worried about the situation arising that did arise.
The concerns and remarks that King George the 5th made in relation to Edward, young George and his family turned out to be wise before the event, and fully justified.
Eileen atkins reprised her role as queen mary of teck in the crown from this
Eileen Atkins plays Queen Mary, Which she also does in The Crown series. Brilliant
In which one is she propped up ?
I knew she looked familiar! Haha. I think the actor who played David here also was in The Crown.

Gracias por subtitularla!! Y subirla!
Thank You so much for posting this! :D
Elizabeth was the daughter of an earl. Not a commoner by any stretch. She was a good friend the Princess Royal, Mary, only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary.
Actually when her father was born he was not yet Count, so yes, she was commoner at birth, it doesn't matter if later her father was Earl and she obtained the title of Lady
Anyone who isn't royal is a commoner, even an earl or a non royal duke. Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of an earl, was a considered a commoner
Muy buena actuacion del rey george , gracias por la traduccion .
Thank you Matias for uploading this; I have been trying to see it for years but I missed it the first time around and I haven’t been able to find it in full, until now.
I didn’t know that this had been shown in the United States either, though I suppose I should not be surprised because I know that they have shown other royal dramas and historical programmes in the past.
Suffice to say, if it had not been shown in the US, I might never have seen it, seeing as an American viewer posted it here.
Thank you for posting this film, an excellent interpretation of the times and Characters, I think Edward did England a favour by abdicating, but that is my humble opinion.
We now have the throwback of Harry and his wife .
Absolutely agree.
Your missing a big point. 6th in line will never be king and Andrew is gone that one by force.
When I was a young girl, I thrilled seeing the Coronation of Elizabeth II. As an American seven year old in 1952, my only “knowledge” of royalty was from storybooks. As I got a little older, I read an article about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in a magazine covering their elegant lifestyle in Paris. It mentioned his former position as king. I then learned their story and thought it was a “poignant romance”. When I asked my mother about it she said “that woman should be ‘horsewhipped’ for what she did to that country”. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I learned about their Nazi involvement leading up to World War II. When I learned that our FBI was keeping an extensive file on them at the time, I realized that my mother had the right instincts after all. She passed away before I knew the story; so I never had a chance to discuss it with her. She may have known about the speculation at the time, but there was only suspicion. When Meghan Markle came on the scene, I had a queasy feeling of “here we go again, another American trying to be ‘royal’ with no understanding of what it means.” Even though there wasn’t the crown at stake, it has caused a lot of grief and disruption to the family. A TH-cam blogger over here has has dubbed her “WalMart Wallis”! Personally, I think it is an apt way of linking the two events together.
@@IndependentConversationsWhy would Harry even want to be King? I'll never understand why Prince Andrew, a statutory rapist who paid 12 million dollars to settle a civil lawsuit brought by someone he raped is more popular in England than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
@@courtneyraymer6586"WalMartWallis"? Seriously? Leave Harry and Meghan alone!
And just to think King Edward the 8th gave it all up for a woman that didn't really love him. He died without her in the arms of his nurse, calling for her but she stayed downstairs.
Yes. She came to resent and despise the man who put her in his prison to escape his. Of course she enjoyed and took advantage of the benefits of "dating" the king. She just got in too deep because of his man/child "love" for her. She didn't want to marry him. Begged him to not abdicate. She actually saved the Monarchy. I understand her feelings because I too ended up in a relationship that made me becoming resentful. Following her around like a dog. The worse she treated him, the more he loved her. Constantly needing her near. Yes he died in his nurse's arms. He had serious issues with enjoying being dominated. And has anyone thought about what she was forced to give up? Her letters say it all. "Now I'm stuck with him, forever and ever and ever".
Did he really? How cruel. I wonder if he realized it at that moment..?
@@nancyvillines4552 It's true. She wanted to leave him when she understood that he wanted to marry her, but he menaced to kill himself if she left him. He was sick!
@@mayaalieva938 he was too selfish and only thought of himself. He didn't care how it affected her. He put her in a prison to escape his own prison. And we had the beautiful Queen Elizabeth for 70 years. RIP your Majesty ❤️
Well Wallis, be careful what you wish for you just might get it. She had no clue how the Monarchy worked and thought she could just become Queen, and believed that the King was still an absolute monarch. She was a gold digger, she loved getting the jewels, the attention, but seems to me she was a supremely selfish person. If he had become King all cozied up to Hitler one shudders to think what might have happened. @@nancyvillines4552

the wonderful film. thank you very much ❤
I have to say that she’s marvelous and beautiful so I don’t understand why they would think her common and plain- horrible over privileged snobbery reigns in that family and still does but not with the current King. Thank you Mate’❤
The current king NOT over privileged?!! Hm.
The current King lets his wife invite people like Jeremy Clarkson who wrote horrible and uncalled for remarks about Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, the wife of his son Prince Harry and the mother of his two youngest grandchildren Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to lunch with her in public. And don't even get me started about that pathetic little man Piers Morgan.

0:13, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon is not a commoner! She's an Aristocrat, born in Scottish Noble Family
and Aristocrat yes but as far as they were concerned she was a commoner
If you are not 'Royalty' you are, still, a commoner. Just a, quirk of the language.
Thank god for poor Wallis Simpson. She saved the monarchy. People don't realise she never wanted David permanently. He was a fling, who she couldn't get rid off. We owe her a massive debt in reality. David was Harry mach one.😮
That was fantastic! 👏 I can't help but see so many similarities between Meghan Markle and Wallis Simpson. And the level of damage and disrespect they both have displayed, to the Monarchy.
Wallis once married to David did very little damage to the monarchy, but markle continues to inflict her unwanted self on the monarchy with spiteful unproven remarks
Never thought that I would gain respect for Wallis. Meghan has managed that.
The actress that played Queen Willaima also played Queen Alexandea in the mini series Edward the 7th
Es la actriz Helen Ryan.
I recognized her immediately!
Elizabeth was godmother of Sofia of Greece. It s said that She and former spanish Queen Ena planned the union of Sofía and Juan Carlos
Excellent portrayal
I loved this version of the history of the monarchy.
A great story!
It's hard to tell if Wallis was the villain or if she really was the "golddigger" everyone believed her to be, I watched that one movie about Edward and Wallis (the one casting Joely Richardson) and they depicted her as a helpless victim who couldn't seem to make herself walk away from a "powerful man" and tried to do the right thing by giving him up, and eventually growing to love him. So victim or villain? I have no idea, but I'm still loving this
Read Anna Pasternaks book, The American Duchess. Best one written on her. You are absolutely correct.

Well, even though he gave up the crown, they spent the rest of their lives together. I think that says something about their relationship. I feel she's gotten a bad rap by history, but I could be wrong. I'd be interested in what modern day Brits think on the subject.

Chills when Queen Mary said 'to give up all that for a woman of no importance.' Wallis had no respect for the monarch. But this movie clearly shows the strong support that Bertie received from his wife. I understand now why Hitler was afraid of her.
‘The Bad guys prevailed’. Well that depends on one’s point of view doesn’t it? Edward VIII remaining in the throne would have been a disaster for the UK. We were lucky to be rid of him and a GOOD king replaced him. As Noel Coward once said. ‘There should be statues of Wallis Simpson on all village greens in England as she saved England from a bad King’ his nazi sympathies would not have been tolerated during the war.
I think he was only explaining how that old story was told before. But he knew the "bad guys" weren't the men that didn't want King Edward to marry Wallis
Indeed. He was enamored of Hitler and his philosophy’s.
@SandraBacigalupo More than enamored, he openly supported him. In a 1950s interview, the Duke said Hitler "wasn't a bad chap," and blamed "fdr and the Jews" for the war.
Given recent history, I cannot believe the British taxpayer still supports this ghastly crew.
hay una pelicula en español elizabeth porfavor
Love this movie❤
For future info.
There is no such title, The King or Queen of England. The Last Queen Of England was the Tudor Queen Elizabeth 1st.
The present Queen’s title is Queen of The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.
Actually, the last Queen of England was Anne, who was also Queen of Scotland and Queen of Ireland. You must remember, England and Scotland were legally distinct states until the Acts of Union of 1707 proclaimed the merging of England and Scotland as Great Britain with Anne as its first monarch. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland only officially came about as proclaimed in the Acts of Union of 1801 during the reign of George III. And then the UK became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland during 1922 during the reign of George V after Ireland was partitioned with the south becoming the Irish Free State.
I think royalty will look at anyone not born equal or above them as "common"

A chronicle of the life of George VI, who was forced to become King following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII, and his relationship with his wife, Elizabeth.
I always loved this movie. I.never liked Wallis and Edward VIII.but the British people loved King George, VI and Queen Elizabeth (Bertie and Elizabeth). As well as their daughters. The late Queen Elizabeth, II and Princess Margaret. Putting duty first and loving your people
Excellent cast.
My dad and I always said Wallis was a slut.
I truly love Robert Hardy he always made a fantastic Churchill. He was an amazing actor.
Yes this was really very blatantly so against the Duke of Windsor.
David/Edward & Wallis were selfish & self-absorbed. It wasn't a genuine love they had, it was codependency & enabling; ALOT like what is going on between Harry & Meghan. It's actually a blessing in disguise that Albert & Elizabeth stepped in, even though they didn't want it. Otherwise, Elizabeth would've been Queen MUCH later than she had been. David would've never had kids with Wallis, because she couldn't get pregnant... thereby, no succession & setting the entire family up to go off their whims, until he died.
El más importante suceso ? No, hay miles de sucesos más importantes en el mundo que abdicación de un rey nazi inglés.

Charles DID NOT do it. The scheming minx a lot of people seem to think the sun shined out of her backside. She was f_cking men left right and centre.
There is something I don't understand. They couldn't married a divorced woman. When do this law changed? Because Charles married Camilla, of course, many years after. But Queen Elizabeth married a single man.
The Queen, The Church and the Government, they all did an exception and let Prince Charles marry her. I suppose even tradition bends the knee against political consensus
First of all, they were not married in the Church. The registrary marriage was followed with a blessing at the church, that was not a wedding.
Second, Charles was a widower.
Third, I believe they have something like a Morganatic marriage. Camilla will never be queen. The title will not pass to any children born of such a marriage.
@@shirleywhitt8740 that kind of makes sense, but isn’t Megan divorced? I'm not sure I agree they were "forced" to give up Hong Kong. By treaty, the city was to be returned to China that year. Had they failed to do so, treaties would have no meaning going forward. Britain was right to obey the rule of law.
It was by the terms of a treaty, not by force.
