Thanks for info Alex. Although it’s a disappointing situation , 52% of uk voted to be a 3rd country and as a consequence we have unfortunately lost a lot of EU benefits. Brexit is a total disaster in my opinion.

I think this is understandable. We're not part of the EU plus the criteria for a blue badge/disabled permit in Spain could be much harder to get. If people from other countries were taking up disabled spaces I'm sure British people would have a problem with it. You see these complaints on social media

What I should have mentioned and what's in my website article is that agreements have been easily reached already with countries not in the EU such as Japan or Canada. Not sure who is at fault here. Spain or the UK

We were in Mallorca for 2 Weeks in May. We never had any problems displaying our disabled badge. We used it in many places. This makes me really sad. I really hope it will change before we come back next year ☹️

I hope so too. Let’s see. It’s been left on the Brexit back burner and needs sorting. You don’t need this stress coming on holiday.

One solution is for Great Britain to apply for membership in the EU, then you get to take part in the benefits that exist if you are part of the community. A bit naughty now, but was it so wise to get out? 😊

ANY parking charge notices need to be received within 14 days. Any later, you write back to the parking company saying that you dispute on the 14 day rule. The poor old man had his notice at 6 months & shouldn’t have paid.

Sadly, regarding the blue badge for parking it is very unlikely it will change. Saying that, most parking inspectors turn a blind eye, but there was one ruthless, jobsworth parking inspector in Puerto Pollensa who was handing out fines which was very sad to hear.

Interesting. The other day, my (Spanish) husband here in Canada said I should advocate for an international disability sticker. I believe he said it half in jest (or did he? You never know with him😮). I don't drive, but use a walker, and we have a disability sticker for parking purposes. Could it not be the same as an international driver's license? As I stated, I don't drive, so I don't know about international driver's license.

There's an EU parking card for people with disabilities. This is enough for the 450 million EU citizens. Building up an additional system sounds a little bit complicated. Who would for example control that the parking permission is granted with the similar rules as it's done in the EU?

@@MallorcaUnderTheSun As you know full well, there is no such alleged universal right. You just made it up. Moreover, disabled "expats" are free to apply for a Spanish badge, which is perfectly fair and reasonable.
Also, it's rather rich for a Brit to invoke universal rights that don't exist, while their own government gives the proverbial toss about universal rights enshrined in international law, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Happy holidays, hypocrites

Probably a Russian or Ruandan disability sign wouldn't work there either. Do you think that UK should have a special treatment again?
UK is not in the EU any more. Very simply. UK status is like Morocco, Ruanda or India.

Thanks for this unfortunate information, Alex. This means that on the holiday that I’ve been looking forward to all year, we won’t be able to see any more of the island, other than resorts very close by Puerto Pollensa. Taking public transport to other areas of the island isn’t possible for me as I need to be able to leave at very short notice, I can’t stick to bus/train timetables. I agree with some of the other comments, this is so petty.
Some comments here allude to Brexit, along the lines of - British people voted for it, so they should put up and shut up. A couple of points here, almost half the result of the Brexit referendum was in favour of staying (including me), it was very very close. In the UK, disabled travellers from the EU are still able to use their disabled parking badges - from the UK Gov website; “The UK has informally agreed to continue the mutual recognition of the EU disabled parking card for visitors to the UK.” I have always felt welcomed in Mallorca, the Mallorcans are friendly and helpful, by and large, but from the Spanish government this is equivalent to putting up a big sign saying “Disabled British Travellers - Go Home!”, in every resort, every place of interest, every beach ….
Once again, thanks Alex for highlighting this issue.
