🤣 "harvesting microgreens"! Yessss!
I needed that one!
I’m 9b second year gardener learning so much. Florida is a crazy weather so always second guessing my strategy thank for the tips
I love that between you and Petrina I get so much useful information for FL. I’m in S FL so I really appreciated you both take the time to include information for us further south.
🙌 Absolutely we are here for you Sarah! My garden is very similar to SoFla (zone 10a) I grew up in Broward so I’m really familiar with how it is down there. Wishing you the best Sarah!
Same here!! 🥰
I am ordering from Whitwam Organics in Tampa, he has vegetables and native wildflowers. The seeds are on the pricey side, if they work in Florida then it is a win. I also use Baker Creek, all their seeds are productive.
Thank you fro the tip Sandra! Can't wait to hear how they do for you 😄
I live in East Broward .I started seed of eggplant, yellow squash, tomatos.did them on the patio..squash plant was fantastic, but took a major hit breaking it ,in a storm.. put the bottom part of leaf lettice in pot and both are growing ,on patio.
Thank you Jacqueline for all the great information.
Your videos are a treasure for somebody like me that is just starting a south Florida garden.
I had success in Virginia for 20 years but Zone 10a is a different beast.
I am in Stuart so..hot and humid.
Also, your videos are a pleasure to watch because you make them fun to watch.
Keep up the good work. 🙂
Thank you so much 🥰 you made my day 😄
Hi, I live in 9b, right on the border line of Lutz/Tampa. I watched this video once through, I had come in from my garden to cool off. I then went to the video on Fall Vegetable Gardening. I got my notebook & am about to watch this once more but take notes this time. I'm going to try growing lettuce, onions & garlic this year. Maybe some peppers too. I love that you're telling us what worked for you & what didn't. Very helpful. I have a covered patio that gets morning sun but has protection from the harsh rains. I'll be seed starting there.
I grew Amish Paste tomatoes that did really well for me. Going to grow them again. My chili peppers have been producing all summer & are still growing more. The Puerto Rican Black Beans (I got from Petrina) grow like crazy. I've got 3 large grow bags filled with sweet potatoes. I just ordered more grow bags for my new crops.
Thanks to you I have a beautiful native flower garden in my front yard & now I'm planting them in my back yard too, to bring in those pollinators. I'm seeing more butterflies, wasps, bees & hummingbirds in my yard. It's such a pleasure to sit out there & just watch & relax.
Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge with us. I'm a real Florida gardener now thanks to you & Petrina.
I’m so happy Linda! Just sending you the biggest hug! It just makes my day that you are growing native plants and helping our wildlife 🥰 You have an amazing vegetable garden and it sounds like it just getting better and better! Best wishes for a great Fall Veggie Garden 😄
South Texas here! I started growing Aji Dulce and Seminole pumpkins because of your channel. I ordered Everglades tomato seeds and will be planting soon.
Howdy South Texas!!! 🤠 YAY!!! I'm so happy these are working so well for you too!
You are going to love the Pimento peppers. They were my favorite this year.
That's exciting! Can't wait!
I’m in Marion County - zone 9a 👩🏻🌾 the rain has been heavy and unpredictable so we’re starting as much as we can indoors this year.
Yes! I’m noticing that. More like what I see in September. Smart idea to start in a protected space
Merritt Island, FL 9b, I grew California Wonder peppers last fall. Worked great, nice big peppers. They are each growing in 3 gallon containers. This summer I moved them so they have afternoon shade. Happy pepper plants ready to go. Love your wonderfully informative videos.😃
I'm in PSJ growing them!
Thank you Becky! It makes sense that fall works better for them. Excited to get my seeds started and see if they will do just as well down here. :D
In your neck of the woods (Pinellas Co) and started our first bed late in the season. Can’t wait to see how fall goes. Enjoy your input and videos. Learning tons!! Thank you for all you do ❤
Howdy neighbor! I’m wishing you the absolute best for your fall garden! 🥰
Whoooo! That's a lot! Thanks for the legwork, but I am not going to use the grids in your planner...neat as it is, it makes me want to squeeze in something just to break up the straight lines, or put in a worm bin somewhere.
Trying to slowly convert annuals to perennials so less seed starting and transplanting, but I will be overwintering some plants (peppers and eggplants) and making contingency plans for frost and freeze possibilities. The remaining annuals are going to squeeze where and when there is room. Looking forward to seeing your version of the "formal" Wild Floridian Veg garden grow! From Tampa 9B
That is a great plan Monica! For me and it sounds like for others that peppers are acting as a short lived perennial (18 months to 2 years) for your zone. I’ve heard some down in zone 10a/b in SoFla have gone longer! I’m thinking of getting one of those in bed compost bins and see how it works for Ben and I. I’m thinking one of the three front beds , which puts it steps from the kitchen. Wishing you the best!
@@WildFloridian The first year was really meh for my poblanos; too long to start, and struggle through the summer and pests....so I followed instructions for overwintering, and this year, OMG, no need to buy peppers at all, and all from 2 plants. I just want a little more variety, so am going to start peppers in the fall for next year production, and also see how long the same poblanos can keep going.
I'm in zone 9b.10a in Seminole, FL. For carrots, I mix pine needles into my soil bed, as they deter the carrot pests. I've heard of Cherokee Trail of Tears black beans. I have Kentucky Wonder pole beans growing now. I have had good luck with Contender Bush beans planted closer together - 50 day harvest!
Awesome! That is a great tip for the carrots. I might have accidentally done that since most of my carrots grow under my pines and they always dump tons of needles at end of summer.
Hi Jacqueline, I am in zone 9b (Avon Park) for 1 year now. My winter crop from last year was drowned from the hurricane. Had no back up plants. Spring crop didnt fair so well either. Tomatoes all got blight. The sun was just too much also. So this year going with a 40% cover for the garden. Hopefully that lets enough sun through. Also have backup plants in the wait in case needed. Something new in gardening all the time to learn. I appreciate this channel so much since our environment is basically same.
On the Polk/Hillsborough county line. Live in Polk Lakeland. Found your video because last year got into gardening more. I have ducks, chickens and turkeys. But i put in an asparagus garden last fall. I have to wait two years before harvest. So one more to go. But they are doing so good. I have a butterfly garden a creek and lots of bees and butterflies. Been working on the homestead for two years now and coming along great. Getting all the fences and stuff in as priority . But do have a 30 x 30 row garden. I keep ut simple while doing the bigger projects. I get plenty of kale, collard, radishes, broccoli and cauliflower. Tried brussel sprouts but wasnt successful will try again this year. I have tomatoes going , pinapples and a Meyers Lemon teee started. Im concentrating on perinnials first since that take a couple years to harvest sometimes longer.
I will say this, always be happy about what you get and dont be discouraged about what you dont. Especially when doing many task on start up.
Wow 🤩 You are doing so much! And I love your mindset. Something’s will work the first time, somethings we have to figure out and some things aren’t for us. You are doing wonderful balancing long term and short term harvest! Wishing you the best this fall!
@@WildFloridian thank you. Same to you. If you like Asparagus I would encourage it. They make a great sun filter and shelter for good insects and butterflies. Great companions to strawberries. Just remember they are there for 20 years. So plan accordingly. It is hard to resist not harvesting a few the first couple years but looking forward to the day. If you need pointers just ask. I did a lot of research and mine took off like a champ. Biggest thing is getting the bed prepped for longevity.
Tried Broccoli greens last year, it’s now my favorite green. So delicious. Almost liked the greens as much as the broccoli.
I've had amazing luck with the Parris Island Lettuce. Zone 8b
Awesome! That's good to hear that it works well in other zones!
10a in Englewood- we’ve had so little rain- and the heat feels worse than usual. Getting beds prepped and hoping to start seeds inside soon. Thanks for the garden plan and ideas, as always!
Best wishes and stay safe Robin! Hope your garden is as resilient as you are 🥰
I've sort of given up on individual spacing. I put just about everything on a 30" grid, except for things I plant in 30" wide beds with 8" between plants in the bed, just wide enough to get a hoe between plants. Some things, like corn, I plant 3 per hole on the 30" grid, green onions a plug of six per hole in beds on 8". I plant this way because it simplifies hoeing.
Up here in Alachua county, I have really good luck growing Prizehead lettuce. It holds sweet and bolts later than other leaf types.
My favorite broccoli is Waltham 29. It always does something, even when the weather is terrible for it. Mid day shade is the best thing to do for broccoli in Florida.
I've grow Detroit and Bull's Blood beets. I prefer Bull's Blood. I have found that liming the bed up to 7.0 pH and providing a little extra boron makes a world of difference for beets, chard, and spinach. I don't know about your sand, my sand wants to be at a pH of about 5.5.
I love how you keep it simple and don’t over stress the spacing 🙌 I’m excited to see how Waltham does for further south. You are doing awesome and I wish you a bountiful harvest!
I’m in 9b (tampa) and was given California Wonder Seeds from greenstalk and the plants have done impressively well! Been producing for months!
That’s awesome to hear! I got mine from starts at Home Depot in early spring. So this makes me feel more confident that I can be successful. Cheers and thank you Abby!
I love in Hillsborough County near Plant City and the Plant City Walmart got absolutely no seeds of any kind this year. I went there last week to get seeds and they had none. Garden center employees said they didn't get any this year. So crazy because I've shopped there for 29-ish years and they've never not had seeds. Never.
Jupiter and Bull Nose bell peppers from Southern Exposure do well on Alabama Coast
Nice!!! Thank you 😊
I’m 9B space coast of Florida! My favorite tomatoes aside from Everglades are pink fang and bonny best! I planted seeds for them yesterday along with some basil to grow near them. I also planted more seminole pumpkins..not sure if it’s too late for those, but other local gardeners said it’s not..
I need to order some bare roots strawberries to grow in my greenstalk planter..
And I want to get some onion seeds too like you!
My pepper plants from spring are still trucking along.. shaded by some yardlong beans, so I’ll let those guys keep producing for me. I have all different varieties.. all spicy.. buena mulata is my best producer and they’re pretty purple peppers, but I also have jalapeños, banana peppers, cayenne, and a couple orange and yellow kinds I forget the name of.
You got some amazing varieties there Molly! Smart thinking about ordering strawberry starts now! I’ll bring it up soon but whatever variety Connie sent me worked the best versus Chandler and Quinault. It was the most productive!
I ordered my strawberry starts from wigwam. Will ship in october. I found an online coupon for 50 percent off Barbee online. So I ordered most of my seeds from them this time. For onions I use georgia sweet. They are short day and grow good bulbs. I think I'll get the green onions from publix and plant the bases. My bunching onion seeds last time did not grow very big.
Zone 9b Casselberry FL I ordered from botanical interests and this year I am doing raised beds and no more chip drop. I got a gopher turtle and grubs. I dont know what to do so I am laying lots of cardboard down then raised beds and pots.
I’ll have to check out botanical interests. For gopher tortoises, I believe are endangered or threatened. Might be worth reaching out to wildlife or conservation groups to see if they can be relocated
Muy buenos dias😊
10a. Naples, Florida. My biggest issues this time year are horn worms, spider mites, and aphids. Plus miscellaneous bugs and diseases. It's a everyday battle but still control-able but tough. The heat also has been tough this year. Right now what is doing well or somewhat well are my sunflowers, morningas, watermelons, cantaloupe, asparagus yardlong beans, Hungarian wax peppers, Carolina cayenne peppers, sweet basil, dragon fruit, carrots. My few varieties of cherry tomatoes are doing okay but heat and bugsare tough on them now. Spider mites have taken out few cherry tomatoes also. The hornworms/worms are controllable but you have to also be on the look out and if it gets bad I will use pyrethrin or spinosad only at night. Most time I can control aphids and bugs in general without but spider mites are tricky cause there hard to see at all. Keep eye on aphids and ants because they can get out hand fast here in humid hot Naples, Florida. I also have lemon jalapeños, better belle 2 belle peppers, golden habaneros, sweet habaneros, Tabasco peppers, growing but they are partially shaded and haven't produced yet but are flowering. So I believe soon they will be producing a lot. Majority of garden is also on a drip system with timer, helps tremendously.
You are fighting the good fight! Thanks for sharing your amazing crops!
I’m a new subscriber 10a coastal (Stuart)to your channel and absolutely love it! You are doing an awesome job…I’m binge watching right now. I love tropical fruits but will start a veggie/herb garden this fall…hoping to work my way into a food forest. Picking the varieties are so hard…so many choices! Hope you will do an in-depth segment on strawberries, especially since we have Plant city so close by. Is it possible to grow them by seed?
Howdy neighbor 👋 I’m so happy you found me! I did a video about strawberries a year ago. Not sure what I’ll do this year. But we’ll see 😊 The videos definitely follow along what I’m doing and I’ll be adding strawberries again
My question no. On seems to address. With spacing is that just how from each other or from any plants. If I am a companion planting can I put other plants between my spaces? Also I tend to ober plant but seem to do well. Have I just been lucky or are suggested spacings a little extra?
I’m trying onion from seed this year. It is also the Texas varety
Nice! Marilyn
You just gave me a way to thin. It pains me. Now I’ll go “harvest micro greens for the salad” ❤
🙌 Yay!!!
Good morning
I’ve been watching all your videos. I love them and learning a lot.
I know this question is not related to your video but I did come across a video that you had friendly plans that were not native to Florida and I was wondering what are your thoughts on Boston ivy? Is growing wild on to of my ficus wall and I love the flowers it gives. But after learning some are friendly and some are invasive I wanted to know.
Hi Madrid! I'm not familiar with Boston Ivy, so I don't have advice for you. I always recommend removing invasive species from outdoor areas that can allow it to go beyond your garden. There are great groups online that give more informed opinions. Best wishes!
HI JACQUELINEYOU CAN GROW JALAPENO PEPPERS YEAR-ROUND; I HAD MINE FOR 2 YEARS BEFORE I PULLED THEM AND WILL BE STARTING NEW ONES. I AM IN THE MANGO/PLANT CITY AREA THE LUNCH BOX PEPPERS, TABASCO PEPPER'S AND PLABLANO PEPPERS ALSO LASTED 2 YEARS. I PLAN ON DOING TOMATOES AGAIN THIS FALL SINCE I FIND THEY DO BETTER WHEN TRANSPLANTED IN THE FALL FOR A SPRING EARLY SUMMER HARVEST.I HAVE NOT DONE WELL GROWING BROCOLI OR CAULIFLOWER SO I MIGHT TRY ONE MORE TIME TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR INFORMATION I ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS.
Thank you so much Sue! You bring up such a great point that peppers can grow a couple years. Work smarter not harder! I’m definitely focusing more on broccoli, it just seems that cauliflower is a bit too fussy for me. Happy growing and good luck 🍀 Sue!
Easily 2 onions a week!!!
Right?!?!? So many onions!
Do you happen to know if Monsanto owns Burpee now? My mom heard that they do, but I haven’t looked into it yet. Just thought I’d ask to see if you had heard this. Thankyou for all of your videos!! Love them all!
(I’m in Indian River County, across from you on the east coast. 😉 Zones 9B/10A)
Milton, FL panhandle
I found a seed company that sells heirloom varieties for Florida and I think they are about 1/2 the amt. in cost as their motto is everyone deserves to afford growing food. They are not organic but are non-gmo. They come in small plastic bags that you can completely close the bags back up and of coarse have a label on them. The name of the company is called “Florida Seed & Garden. Have you heard about them and if so, are they a reputable seed company?
It only took a couple days to deliver too. If you spend just under $30, there’s no delivery fee.
I watched you on the Think Media podcast and ♡ your style ! I have a ton of respect for you...a WORKing MUMmy + TH-camr...you're superwoman! I wonder if I could take this opportunity to be selfish and ask you 2 little questions about your set-up. I know you use your smartphone to record. What do you use to keep your phone steady as you move around? Do you use a particular microphone too or any software to enhance your audio quality?
Thank you so much! I don’t use any sound recording beyond what is in the phone. And this is what I use to hold the phone. It’s compact and you can Bluetooth to your phone to shoot selfies.

@@WildFloridian Oh boy T H A N K Y ♡ U so much for taking the time to reply! That triipod looks awesome...and affordable...I purchased it! Keep going, keep growing...you're a super role model. With love (from London, United Kingdom) Sandy
I’m in Plantation, FL. What about cucumbers ?
J, thanks so much for reminding ppl to mention their area or zone; so helpful for us newbies. I’ve spent way too much time watching videos only to find the grower is in MN or CA, etc. I’m learning a lot from you and Patrina and happy to say my tiny Delightful Dunedin garden is thriving and now expanding. I hope to start some san Marzano tomato seeds soon. Any recommendation for a seed starting soil formula to use?
Awww thank you! Petrina and I are here for you! For seed starting mix, I’m just using a standard one from Home Depot. Nothing fancy.

Hi! SE Florida, 10b. I tried growing Waltham29 broccoli in February. I had lots of leaves but no broccoli heads. I waited until June to pull them out. Isn't it too warm for broccoli? I was going to start in December this time around.
It's early to start them now. I was sharing so people could get ideas on what to buy. We are getting closer to the time when seed supplies run out.
Have you tried Finlay Onions out of Polk County-9b?
I'm trying the Florida Finley onions this year. Can't wait to see how much they multiply!
No. But I would love to hear how it goes 😄
I'm having garden placement planning anxiety. I need to get to it quickly as things are germinating. I have a dry erase board but it is time to erase it again.
Oh gee, a shout out! The pressure is on to get this right. 😂
I can understand the anxiety, but you'll do great! Just start with you know you will definitely have to do. And no pressure! Just a shout out because you are wonderful... the peppers may not be but you are 😊
Can you do a video on your planner? Not to give any of your ideas away but wondering what I would get if I ordered one.
Absolutely! There will be a video once we finalize it. I realized that was a big miss this last year. Also if you get on the behind the scenes mailing list, you will see things throughout and get notified when it goes on presale.
@@WildFloridian I need all the help I can get. I think I’m already on the preorder list but I’ll check again. ❤️❤️
I don’t know if you said it in the video but I’ll ask anyway. Are you direct sowing these seeds? Can’t wait to see the beds all filled with your plan.
Only carrots and beets will be directly sowed. All the others I’m going to start in trays. The rain has been insanely rough here. Just absolutely Hulk smashing type rain. So I’m starting everything under cover for now
@@WildFloridian Sounds good. I will follow your lead. I’m in Kissimmee and the rain here is tough too.
Can I replant more flowers for bees and butterflies? I don't want to upset the normal migrating/feeding of the pollinators. I'm in Polk City.
Yes! They will need food throughout fall and into early winter. 😊
Outredigious lettuce is spelled that way because it’s red...outREDigious.
Ahhhhhh!!!!!! Thank you Kelli!
@@WildFloridian you’re very welcome! It’s pretty good too!
Off topic question: Do you fertilize your papaya plants? If yes what do you fertilze with. My papayas are growing larger very slowly. I noticed in other videos that you have large fruits. Thanks.
I just have mulch for the papaya. Nothing special otherwise
@@WildFloridian Ok thanks
10b tried twice to grow tomatoes, one grew 7 ft tall, started producing tomatoes then got spider mites. I can’t seem to grow tomatoes long enough before spider mites take over.
Oh no! I recommend trying Everglades tomatoes. They are the most resilient for your zone.
I’m in the SWFL area and I agree the Everglades tomatoes run wild down here. Highly recommend!
So your direct sowing all your fall seeds? I’m confused if I should grow carrots, lettuce, spinach, arugula, onion & kale indoors or outdoors? I’m in 10a. I have diff varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant and beans growing in solo cups outdoors.
Don't start carrots indoors the root can get stunted, Arugula does not like to be transplanted, start outdoors. Onions do best started inside then transplanted. Kale and go either way, but is hard to germinated when the soil is very warm, so for an early start I start my indoors, the transplant out.
@@williammikell2210 thank you so much! Much appreciated. 🙏🏼
How do I preorder 2024 planner?
Get on the mailing list www.wildfloridian.net/plannerpresale
Most gardening videos, I can put on 2X speed and it sounds normal. Your videos must be put on .50 speed to understand what you’re saying. Goodness, you talk fast.
