Anyone going after Disco can come for me, I make no qualms that the F-14 was a sub-par fighter with poor flight characteristics. It was a fine interceptor and looked beautiful on the ground / deck, but it looked like a goofy turkey in the air, and could really only bfm when it was in a super lightweight clean config and bingo gas. No amount of fan service for the platform can turn the jet into something it was not.

GE helped it but still heavy

@@tsechejak7598 GE Did help a lot but then the aircraft had a self-immolation / self-destruction issue at high speed which was never solved and cost the Navy lives and ultimately accelerated the jet's retirement.

      Sub par is just ridiculous

@@Scoobydcs To the layman, yes. To those that understand the difference between a fighter and an interceptor, it's not ridiculous, it's an obvious conclusion. The Navy would still be flying the F-15 if they went with the F-15N SeaEagle like they shoulda.

i am aware of the difference between a fighter and interceptor and the f14 was always designed as a multirole fighter from day 1.
how much would a navalized eagle weigh?
the awg9/phoenix combination was a LONG way ahead of the sparrows carried by the eagle @@BasedF-15Pilot

I am pretty much at awe here this has been absolutely fantastic. I've learned so much and had about 3-4 moments where things just clicked into place and I went : ooohh now it makes sense. Really great stuff and I appreciate it a lot.
Also, I find it funny that the SubBrief guy got his channel taken down for a whole for explaining really basic but interesting stuff like how toilets work on a modern SSN and I'm sitting here downloading everything I can to preserve in case... 😂

This was such a great episode breaking down the 2v2 and 4v4 scenarios etc. They beautifully compliment the Kluso and Sly episodes. Which I will have to go back to again! Thank you both. And cheers 🥃

No apology needed! I loved my time in an f-14 squadron and I love the Turkey. We all knew it was a fleet defense fighter with a lot of warts. It was the people and the mission that made it a great community. We're all in this together. Love these podcasts. BTW, the real F-14 movie was The Final Countdown.

Looking forward for no6 as well as live QA!

Some A-10s had a false canopy painted underneath. Perhaps it was more effective against ground threats than airborne threats?

Question for future Disco: Related Eagle Eye. I was an F-15 maintainer and there were rumors that pilots had installed radar detectors in the cockpits at some point, like Fuzzbusters. True or false?

Camo- blue sky is seen as blue because it is but also because thats what you expect it to be which alters the actual look, you view the sky subjectively in other words even if you think you can trust your senses as wholey objective, you can’t your perception is subjective. The blue sky is also bands of white and light gray colors due to dust and aerosols that reflect light brighter in white then molecules reflecting blue color, so again it may seem uniform light blue sky but its layers of haze that you visually combine, so a light gray jet is easier to hide. The bright reflective accumulation of dust also makes it easier to hide a shiny aluminum B-58 in the sky vs a blue painted jet or bomber, hence P-47s, P-51s, various bombers ended WWII without paint

The AWG-9 is not pulse-doppler? Then why is the button in my DCS F-14 labeled PD-Search? Someone is lying to me and I don't know who!
    Also I thought F15 was 4th gen and F4 was 3rd gen.
This episode has really messed with what I though I knew.

    • @10percenttrue
      @10percenttrue  ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think what Disco is referring to is what he saw as the need to run the radar in pulse mode only when over land. That preference is confirmed by an F-14 RIO in the following link, as is the fact that the AWG-9 did have PD modes! fightson.net/1030/thoughts-on-radar-modes-of-the-awg-9/
There are two systems for referring to fighter generations: the oldest way counts the first gen as Gen 0. The newer way counts it as Gen 1. So, the F-15 is either 3rd Gen or 4th Gen, depending on which system you are using.

TWS, RWS, PD are all doppler. Pulse is pulse. (P-Search and P-STT)
Your DDD Y axis shows closure in doppler modes, and range at pulse modes.

F-14D was a better bomb hauler then the super rediculous hornet but unfortunately the avionics and other systems were just to old to keep around
