George, this is always a confusing subject for people. I am glad you did a video on how to get and install fonts, thank you! Appreciate all you do! Rich
Thanks Rich! I try to do something like this every couple of years or so and with the current lockdowns I expect that more people than usual will be making their own cards this year.
Great help! I had to use another site to identify the font I had in a JPG, and I found it at a different website, but I appreciated the help getting it loaded into Windows for use in Elements.
Is there a way to change the color of the type and not the extras? For example, there are several Christmas fonts with sparkles or snowballs behind the words. I would like to change the words to red but leave the sparkles white. Thank you.
Hi Gail, what you need to do is to have 2 layers of type. One is your regular type layer and the other one is the layer for the sparkles or snowballs. Put the sparkles layer above the regular type layer, set it to whatever color you want for the "extras" and then use a layer mask to hide the letter parts of that layer.
@@HTGGeorge Thank you. The problem is the fonts from DaFont come with the text and the sparkles all on one layer. I have tried to make a selection of individual letters, but the letters with curved edges are difficult, and they sometimes say, "Could not make new layer because no pixels are selected."
@@gailsweet244 Hi, no need to make any selections. Here are the step by step instructions. Add your text to your project. This gives you the text on one text layer including the sparkles. Set that text to whatever color you want for your text. Now right click that text layer and choose Duplicate Layer. Now you have two matching text layers. On the top text layer change the text to the color you want for the sparkles. You now have two text layers with the bottom layer the correct color for your text and the top layer with the correct color for your sparkles. Now make sure the top layer is active then click the Layer Mask button at the top of the Layers Panel. It will give you a new White icon next to the normal layer icon. That is your layer mask. Double click the layer mask icon, it will get a light blue line around it showing that the layer mask is selected. Now select the paint brush and choose Black as your color. Make sure that the paint brush is hard edged and not a soft edged brush. Then paint over the letters in the top text layer. What you are doing is painting black onto the layer mask and that is hiding the letters on that layer, thereby showing the letters in the layer below. That will leave you with the correct color letters on one layer and then the correct color sparkles on the layer above.
Thank for this video. I have a question about uninstalling fonts - I have so many it's confusing to find the ones I need. If I uninstall fonts that came with Photoshop Elements 2020 will it cause problems with the program?
Sure, you can remove fonts. But a better idea is to hide fonts, that way they won't show up in your font list but they will still be available to the system just in case they are needed. Go to the Start Menu, open Control Panel and then open Fonts. In this folder set view to Large Icons. You will now see all of your fonts with a preview of what it looks like and the name of the font. Right click on a font and you can show or hide that font. If you hide a font it will still show in this list but will be grayed out, in programs like Photoshop Elements it will not show in the font list.
Hi, you can put the downloads anywhere you want, I just made a separate folder for that which I called Fonts. Once the font is downloaded you will need to unzip the file then just double click on the font file to install it.
How To Gurus thank you got it , on my Mac it automatically unzips the files & I guess I need to prepare before because it’s going into wrong folder 🤷♀️🤷♀️
FYI, Your Font Downloads text file. If you add ".LOG" as the first line in the file, it makes it a Windows LOG file. When you open the file, it jumps to the end and adds the current Time & Date to enter the next entry. Entries into the log file are Oldest at the top, newest at the bottom. Try it!
Is there something new in Photoshop Elements 2023 that will not allow fonts to show up? Some of my installed fonts are now missing and new fonts don't show up. Can you help?
Hi Lanna, I can't find any posts about font problems in 2023 and Adobe didn't change how fonts work in 2023, so it sounds like a local issue on your computer instead of a program issue. First try completely closing down Elements and restarting, this will get the program to re-read the font list from your computer. If that doesn't help then go to the Edit menu in Elements, click on Preferences and General. Click on the big button that says Reset Preferences on next launch. Close and Re-open Elements.
@@HTGGeorge I tried all of those things and it still doesn't work. Also my clone and healing brush tools keep making a cross instead of a circle. This has all been happening after upgrading from 21 to 23. I appreciate any light you can shed on this!
@@lannawing9789 Hi Lanna, no idea on the fonts, I haven't had any issues and I wasn't able to find any online threads about font issues with 23. On the tools, go to Edit/Preferences then click into Display & Cursors, you can choose how the cursors look here.
@@HTGGeorge Thanks! I'll keep working on the fonts - the one I'm having trouble with specifically is Signature Moments if that helps for looking into it. I've deleted it, re downloaded from daFont and another place and re installed it but it just doesn't show up anymore.
Double check your fonts folder. Also if you used the tt font try the otf font instead. I installed both with no problems from dafont. Nice font by the way.
