How have I been listening to this my whole life and am now just realizing how serious the lyrics are? They’re actually telling a story about the state of music, even for the 80’s, this is timeless!
Many people do not realize this song is actually from 1979 -- it peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1979. So these lyrics, as prophetic as they were, was both retrospective AND prospective in the 1970s!
"Radio's NOT dead! But it is ending THIS brodcast." In all seriousness I actually remember hearing this on the radio (Oddly enough) growing up since my parents were big on going places during the weekends and we spent a good deal of time in the car. It just took me until I was in my teens to really understand what it was about. And of course was the first song that came to mind during that fight in Hazbin.
My Dad gave me my love for music, he used to randomly make mix CDs for the family when we went on visitation and I distinctly remember him putting this on for me❤miss u Dad, I hear you in every song that was ours❤RIP
@Seetiyan and I'm actually one of them. The irony of it is that it plays on the radio as you drive a car. A niche that in real life radio still fills to this day. I mean, you wouldn't watch videos while driving, otherwise you'd probably crash.
Video killed Radio DVD killed Video Itunes killed CD Netflix killed DVD But nothing killed this song as it still a classic and something to groove with while playing GTA Vice City.
Happy Birthday MTV turning 43 on this day August 1st. I remember the countdown and then this video playing first back in 1981. Changed music forever. The 80's rocked!!!
GTA Vice City is how I know this song. The game is set in the 1980’s, a time when music videos were in their infancy but starting to dominate the music scene in a very insidious manner that would facilitate the rise of MTV. Strangely enough, come to think about it, the first song on MTV was none other than The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star.
I always hear this song and think of man talking about an ex lover of his (Oh-wa Oh-wa voice), a radio star. He's reflecting on how he first fell for her, young and in love with her voice, upon meeting her kids he thinks of her again. He obviously still feels a lot for her, but he witnessed the murder of the main director of the radio station after "they took the credit for her second symphony" bc it obviously was an issue, she was being cancelled. He helped her cover up the murder by blaming someone else "VTR" and after that they broke off." because he was an accomplice to murder that's also why he sounds concerned when asking "what did you tell them" he schedules a rendezvous at the old studio where the murder took place, and they both start reminiscing over that time, but he can't stop thinking about how he watched the woman he idolized and loved kill a man. Even when he's thinking of how she called him her radio star back then, the murder still plays over that. Although video killed the radio star, the radio star got her chance to kill the video before it took off. She was the first one, and the last one.
Yours sound great and sounds more inline than mine. I’m honestly hearing it as a ghost story of sorts. The man still reminiscing on the past as he goes around the old studio. The radio star being killed by video, the children of the radio star started talking about her & her death to the man who was taken by all this because the kids speaking of details that they wouldn’t know about. The man goes to the old studio where the radio star was killed in, that was gonna turn into a video studio but the radio star kept haunting the studio. she appears to tell him about how the video industry killed her career and the heads of the studio ended up killing her back in ‘52.
I think its about the death of radio shows that were popular in the 1950s as television became something everyone could afford, and the "vtr" part is probably a typo to VCR, which makes more sense as recordable television probably played a big part in the death of radio shows.
when i was a little kid my dad got me a radio for my birthday he made a cd to and on it were classics like this final count crazy train and many more. aah the memories
(SPOILER ABOUT HAZBIN HOTEL) Fun Fact: In Hazbin Hotel's Episode 2, this epsiode is called "Radio Killed The Video Star". I guess VivziePop was inspired by this song when give name to episode 2. Because in this episode, we learn that Vox and Alastor's hate each other and they're enemies. Vox is a TV screen and Alastor is "Radio Demon." In that episode, Alastor was beat Vox with a Musical Battle. That's why it's called "Radio Killed The Video Star." This song must be Vox's favourite song.
