I caught on to the theme of “the emperor has no clothes”. No one can cross the threshold to enter the house except for the young boy who makes it some way before become afraid and turning back. People feel this barrier exists because everyone else won’t cross it. But once the guests come out everyone realizes there is no barrier and they can cross it easily. The ‘herd mentality’ theme can be one explanation of the groups inability to leave the room.

quite insightful! Especially your comments about the repetition at the beginning of the movie helping to trap the guests even before they're confined. I hadn't thought about that!

Wow, thank you. I just saw the film, during this pandemic lockdown. I feel like I am living Bunuel's oeuvre!

I thought the same thing, except I did not commit the error of the characters in the film, I do not allow the irrational panic to enslave me, I cross the threshold!

Very informative. I saw the movie and couldn’t quite figure out what it was about; now I understand. It’s like an allegory of the wealthy society of Spain during Franco’s reign

Good review, but something special about a less fortunate review was that the characters are cloistered in the mansion just aside on providence street, as if they aren’t fit to walk the streets of God

This is one of my favorite movies, and not just Bunuel movies.
And the notes mentioned about Bunuel and dinner scenes certainly puts an added perspective on other Bunuel movies such as "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" and even "The Phantom of Liberty".

Great essay! I think the repetitions are meant to symbolise the theatrical acting and hypocrisy of their social roles in civilised society (Jung’s individuation). The entrapment in the music room (that is a small theatre) makes their masks fall, driving some guests to primitive states and beliefs. Only re-enacting their early civilised roles they manage to escape (though only temporarily). This is an apocalyptic story after all.
PS: three characters that die are outside the room when Blanca’s piano recital occurs. Sergio is one of them and is the one who gets mad at the jokes enacted in the dinner.

I really liked the essay, don´t get me wrong, but I just thing that it would be nice that you point out that this is your analysis and that the movie is, in actual words of the director, open to interpretation. Apart from that, amazing video :D
