4 years after Beach Fossils' great sophomore album Clash the Truth, the Brooklyn band has returned with their most lavish effort yet. I can still commend the band for not shamelessly trend-chasing like many of their dreamy, jangly contemporaries, but unfortunately the pastiche of '60s pop sounds they serve up here isn't enough to distract from some pretty bland songwriting.

I’m still butthurt about this score. One of my favorite albums.
I personally like how the album sounds and even though it does jump from one place to another too often, I still give it at a minimum a 7 out of 10. It's just a very relaxing listen.

I absolutely love the album, it’s what got me into Beach Fossils in the first place, and it just evokes some feelings that not a lot of other music does.

I love the new album tbh, Beach Fossils have progressed 10x more than any other chill band that sounds like this. The singer isn't showoffish I guess, he's more melodic. And I find it very fitting and very pretty. But it's just your opinion my dude

Bro that song slaps though. I do agree with melon that it’s not adequate, particularly with its size and it’s simple repetition, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying it
One time I was walking on a beach when a bright light struck my eyes. I knew that no material created by sediment could capture light to that degree so I knew that a material alien to this ecosystem had washed up on the shore. Thinking I had found treasures beyond my comprehension, I instead found a melon with bright pearly white teeth asking me if he wanted to hear his review of the piss in the ocean.

Loooooove beach fossils 😫 I like that they seem to be ahead of everyone else in the same genre and I love that each album has a different influence. it changes the feel and mood slightly which makes all their songs different and fresh!
I humbly disagree, internet melon. I think the departure of sound is great and exemplifies what a next album should. While Clash the Truth is still probably better, Somersault is a nice change.
4 years after The Needle Drop posted this review, I've watched it. I will say I LOVE this album. I actually hadn't heard it until this past month but finally checked it out and was pleasantly surprised by this new direction. I really dig the more melodic, more instrumentally diverse style. They used to be a band for whom I couldn't really make out half the lyrics, and I didn't care because I just enjoyed their music and sound a lot. On this one, I enjoy their sound AND I can actually understand the lyrics, and they're good, I enjoy singing along to them. I'd give Somersault a solid 8/10.

I thought this album kinda sucked until I hadn't heard it for a year, listened to it 2 more times and now i'd say its a solid 8/10. love it
see, i really like beach fossils. their style was nearly unique with the way Payseur sounded, and their actual production value in the clash the truth album. but, somersault was way over produced imo. it makes me a little uneasy listening to it, then listening to a clash the truth song, the departure from rock music is obvious. whatever though idc more beach fossil i likey
iancarter2 idk this album seemed to polished and boring, clash the truth had some sort of gritinees or nostalgic feel idk how to explain and I heard the drummer left so maybe that's why

compared to anything before this album i would rate it lower but i would say it’s a great display of musical maturity and band evolution. you were spot on with this review in my opinion. super deep and awesome analysis i know i’m totally late but you’re awesome man.
This review alone is why I don’t take Anthony’s opinions too seriously. The songwriting on this album was wonderful. It was an album I found myself coming back to over and over again.
I respect your opinion. For me I can't really rate music in an objective sense. If I put an album on and it's perfect for my mood but the composition is recognizably crappy, 9, or it doesn't feel right for that moment but it's beautifully structured, 5. As time goes on I change taste-wise. Some albums like Beach House's Depression Cherry sounded weird but got better each listen. With DIIV's Is The Is Are, for a while I thought it was the best thing ever, then went back to Oshin and enjoyed it more. The experience is never static.

Beach Fossils is one of my favorite bands. But I would rather go listen to Real Estate if I wanted to hear this sound on Summersault. I still like it, but I think Clash the Truth blows this one away.

To be fair the songwriting isn't particularly strong on Clash the Truth. But whereas Birthday is extremely basic lyrically, it totally rocks out. There isn't that saving musical grace here. Still an enjoyable listen. 6/10 for me
The hole on the vinyl version is too small to fit on the turntable. Feeling a light 2 for that inconvenience

Good, but not in comparison to the other albums that were made, it seemed "off". In the end, you stated your opinion and I didn't agree completely, but I respected it. The songs from this album actually translate really well live, I preferred clash the truth but somersault has got some great songs too

Cold fish? This album is gorgeous and stuffed with way more memorable songs than on that “hot abrasive mess” of Clash of the Turds. At least a 7/10.
You should check out The Motel Beds. They're this lo-fi band from Ohio. Id recommended Sunfried Dreams or Dumb Gold to get a feel for them first.
