Hey! Thanks for talking about my country and yes, your italian is very good! Since I live some 10 miles away from Marostica, I can tell you that these people, dressing in renaissance clothes, are talking part in a traditional festival. Marostica is a fortified town, you can see medieval walls stretch all the way from the plain onto a hilltop where the castle is. When you enter the city walls, there's the square and that square has a big chessboard designed all over it. And that's because in September there's a chess match, only the chessboard is as large as a square and all the pieces are humans! A Knight is a man in armor that rides a real horse, the Bishop is dressed as a real Bishop, the Tower is a tall scaffold decorated to resemble a Tower that runs on wheels and so on. It is based on an ancient legend. Turns out that the feudal ruler of Marostica challenged the suitors of his beautiful and only daughter to a chess match, back in the Middle Ages. But, since this match was going to decide not only the fate of the young lady, but the future of the town itself, because if the suitor won he would have becomed the feudal lord of Marostica when the father died, the Town Council stated that, whenever such matches were played, the people had a right to know and, following the legend, the chessboard in the square was built and living pieces showed the town folks where the match was at every move. And this legend carries on to this day, much like the Palio in Siena. Every year a pageant in Marostica decides who is going to play the father, who is going to play the suitor and, most of all, who is going to play the beautiful young girl! And, of corse, this is a regular chess match, so it might last for days! It's played in the evenings and, when evening turns into night, the referees declare the halt, a picture of the chessboard is taken, everybody goes home and the next evening the match restarts, with everyone at their posts!

CE means Common Era, it's the more acceptable dating system that isn't exclusive to the Christian religion
