The day John Ritter died I cried. He was such a gifted actor and human being. I loved him in "The Waltons", "Three's Company" and "8 Simple Rules" plus his charity work for "The Cerebral Palsy Foundation." We lost a good one that day.

I think his death caught everyone by surprise most especially because he had a current hit series at that time on ABC. He actually collapsed on the set of the show the day before a new episode was to be taped. In a twist of irony, he just finished filming an interview about his career with the Museum of Television and Radio just a few moments before he collapsed and died.

It’s weird because I saw the show out of order so to me he was one of those more mellow preachers. Then I saw this episode and I was rather surprised he started out as (several impolite, naughty words).
I don’t know about you, but I could never stand that kind of preacher. The kind who shouted at you about what a POS you are, like they’re somehow floating above the rest of us.

In VA, it’s like an oven, especially in the spring or summertime. Your face when the preacher stepped out of the car drunk was funny. Jon’s facial expressions as Jason were amusing too. He was so shocked and surprised, bless his little innocent heart. No wonder the Baldwin sisters wanted to adopt him. I haven’t seen anybody that wasted since my first Jonas Brothers Concert back in late 2021. I remember watching this episode when it was first aired. One of the reasons I remember it so distinctly is that the new reverend storyline was pulled almost directly from the movie “Spencer’s Mountain“ that was of course written by Earl Hamner and I see that he co-wrote the teleplay for this episode as well. At some point a few years into the series, I had seen Spencer’s Mountain on TV and enjoyed it very much. I always consider that movie as the “original” pilot for the Waltons series. If any of you fans who watch Judy’s channel have never seen the movie, I highly recommend it!

@@judynorton2598 Hi Judy, thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you how much I enjoy your channel. It is bringing back such great memories. I have shared it with a couple of lifelong friends who also were fans growing up….
As for the movie spencers mountain, I highly recommend that you take a contemporary look when you have time. I think you will see other examples of Earl Hamner adapting storylines and subplots into your television series (why wouldn’t he? They’re both based on his experiences growing up). It has been several years since I watched it myself but one other storyline I distinctly remember is the episode where John Boy went to college. In the movie, “Clay Boy” (James MacArther) faced many of the same challenges. I think in both scripts, the problem was solved by John (Henry Fonda) selling the “dream house“ property. Anyway, we never need an excuse to watch a movie with Henry Fonda and Maureen O’Hara ;-)
Thank you again, I am eagerly awaiting your next episode!

I especially liked seeing Jason playing Camptown Races on the piano and his look when he realizes Grandma is watching him - then he goes immediately into Old Rugged Cross. Grandma never said a word. When you mentioned the pond, and the nearby bridge, I recalled two episodes that included noteworthy, scenes, at the bridge:
    1. The Pin Up (Season 7): When John Curtis runs off, and everyone is out looking for him, it was John and Mary Ellen who find him, as he's walking along the bridge. That allowed John to get on one side and Mary Ellen on the other, in order to retrieve John Curtis and get him home; and
    2. The Last Straw (Season 8): John, Ike, and Jason end up going off the bridge, and into the water, as John, thinking of giving up on everything, was in a drunken stupor, with Ike and Jason trying to get him to return home. John owns up to everything, after that moment, thinking about how life was failing him, and how sorry he felt for what happened to Ike and Jason.

I love the episodes that focus on the spirituality of the Waltons. Mama and Grandma are the strict Baptists, while John is more universalist.
I adore The Sinner and the introduction of John Ritter as Matthew Fordwick. Everyone knows the meaning of sin, but nobody understands the word grace. It was Yancy Tucker after the barn fire, who showed humility, repentance, and offered to make amends to John by repairing the damage. That’s grace.
I like the when Grandpa lead in the singing of Just As I Am in the tent, when everyone still isn’t sure if Rev Fordwick is sincere in his repentance or not. That’s grace.

Reverend: “What did you think of my sermon?” Jim-Bob: “Scary.” Loved that little exchange and the entire episode. Ultimately, I got the feeling that the young Reverend didn’t really want to be so “fire and brimstone,” … it was more that that’s what he thought he was supposed to be. In later episodes we saw that his true nature was more in line with kindness and compassion.
