As a PD patient this has been the best lecture on research by Dr. Chan that I have ever heard.. He is insprational and of major help to me. As a PD patient I have been on different drugs that were totally useless. Thank you Dr. Chan for all the important information you shared with this PD patient.
IN MY OPINION AS A PARKINSON'S PATIENT FOR THE LAST 40 YEARS I WAS DIAGNOSED AT THE AGE OF 20. WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS RESEARCHERS FOCUS ON HOW TO TREAT THE WALKING AND FALLING PART OF PD. IF YOU CAN TREAT THAT PART OF THE DISEASE I THINK YOU WILL COME A LONG WAYS IN HELPING THE MAJORITY OF PD PATIENTS LIVE A MORE NORMAL AND COMPLETE LIFE. THANKS FOR ALLOWING ME TO LEAVE A COMMENT.
Multiple researchers at UF are working on the walking and falling (gait and balance issues) because it is so important. We definitely recommend getting a PT eval and if the PT you see doesn't know much about PD, maybe you can educate them. Our team and others are trained in movement disorders.
Thanks for the presentation. I was diagnosed with a mild case of parkinson disease a few months ago. I am taking Pramipexole, what do you know about this medication? I heard there is a treatment called deep brain stimulation. Can you tell me if this is recommended? Thanks.
We perform DBS surgery at the Fixel Institute. The decision for surgery is an important one and it involves you, your neurologist, and our whole team. If interested, ask your doctor to refer you to us and we will see you and consider multiple treatment options.
DR Jason I have recently started tremur, my Dr says not to think of it. I have all the reason to worry as I have a lot of neurological concerns My spinal cord wad damaged C5-T12 have Hodgkin's lymphoma and # T10 T12 L345 and S1
Hello! We cannot provide medical advice here. We recommend that you have an honest conversation with your neurologist and try to see a movement disorders specialist like those on our team. Our phone number is 352-294-5400 if you want to set up an appointment.
I enjoyed this presentation, I think it's important to know what may be available in the future. 10 years to approval seems way too long for some patients, including me 😀😀
It is. The steps in research are important as they help to show that the new treatment is safe and effective. At Fixel, our interdisciplinary approach takes advantage of approved therapies that work for our patients. That may include medicine, surgery, therapy (PT, OT, Speech). Then we also have clinical trials that patients can participate in.
It can... slurring of words, difficulty in control over breath, forming the words, etc. But there are therapies (breathing, singing, speech therapy, to name a few) that can help counteract the problems one might encounter. And every person with parkinson's is different - thus the saying: "If you've seen one person with Parkinson's, you've seen one person with Parkinson's."
@@FixelInstitute Thanks for elaborating - I agree with you on that. And by Parkinson's expert, can one assume you mean a neurologist who is also a Movement Disorders Specialist? (instead of a Person with Parkinson's (albeit with a PhD from UF and a research nerd) like myself)? 🔬🤔
@@FixelInstitute You can call me Robert, or you can call me Bob, or you can call me R.J., or you can call me Bobby, but you don't have to call me Dr.! ☮🤟🎵🎶(BTW, an excellent presentation, as are all of those that come from the Fixel Institute).

What do you think of the nasal drug developed by Zhittya called FGF-1 for treating Parkinsons disease?

Excellent
Very good talk, however, PLEASE stop saying “right” as it is extremely distracting
The cure comes from within.
I agree
Thank you doctor Chan. Your presentation educated me. Excellent information provided in easy to understand way. I appreciate you.
no amount of prayer unkills your substantia nigra cells buddy
Does Parkinsons interfere with speech and pronunciation.

It can. It's important that you see a Parkinson expert who can help determine if the speech issue is from PD or from something else.
