one suggestions that was given in my ed class was to do a call home before school starts. this gives the parents time to talk to you, the teacher, about any concerns or worries or suggestions about their child. this is also a good time to talk about seating preference (for students with eye issues), IEPs, 504s, or any other diagnosis, you can also find out about any family changes that either happened over the summer or will happen during the school year. Such as arrival of new sibling or foster child or extended family member, death or marriage in the family, any thing else that may cause the child to struggle. you could start the call off with talking to the student and welcome them to your class. It also shows the student that you will call home and since the first contact was for a positive reason you have the parents in your corner. this works for all grade levels.

I believe tools for students who can't sit still are both useful and distracting. Every child is different, and throughout my years of teaching have learned that you have to learn what is causing these behaviors. I personally don't let fidgeting bother me as long as he or she is listening and understanding what is being taught. I have allowed students to stand, bounce on a ball/chair, use a rubber-foot band, and may other things.

In regards to the behavior chart, how would you introduce a behavior chart for a student that you have to constantly redirect? Would you discuss this with your principal to get approval? Then would you speak to the parent(s)? How is it that you approach the matter.
A lot would have to take place before I made the decision to start a student on an individual behavior chart. I would have to to have multiple meetings with parents and getting input from colleagues. I would then sit down with the parent and principal and determine what would be best for that child. ****Side note: I have done many of these meetings over the phone.

This is a fantastic question! I would try doing this from a different approach. I would give warnings before having to take any item away. Remember some kids have not been taught what to do and what not to do. This is a great teaching moment for them! After the warnings, I would have the child come up to me and discuss what we had discussed about the item and what they believe should happen. I would then tell them that I will take it and when they have decided and can tell me what they should do then I return it back to them. You want to give as many opportunities as possible for the child to correct and be sure to model the behavior. I really hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!

How do you ha doe the kids who cut in line all the time. Or the one would Ella you cutted even when no one has cut in the line... I have tried making them the caboose and talked about kids sized problems and teacher sized problems and that cutting in line is a kid sized problem. But nothing seems to be doing the trick.
I've done a few different things. I've moved that student during work time, did a reward system and gave smiley faces when that child was not talking. Some kids just can't help it. I had one sweet kiddo that natural yelled when talking and finally I had to give up and just accept it. Behavior systems work. If you have one in place then every time that child is quiet give him/her something. You could even try the timer and have a set amount of time that he/she has to be quiet during work before they are allowed to talk. My philosophy is if the kid is working and on task but talking it doesn't bother me so long as he/she is not disturbing others. It's hard to tell sometimes because kids respond in different ways. What have you tried?

I am going to grab some this weekend. I think I will get one for each table and make it so that they work quietly for 5 minutes or so and then they can talk while working. I think my kids will totally love this!
