The reason why we have all the gay characters and trans and LBGT pallet swaps etc. Is because they have that trans gender man "Stephanie" on the team. He's on every kombat kast dressed as a lady it's obvious it's a man. So due too that the team likes too kiss his ass just too make themselves seem "woke" reason is because everyone is too afraid too stand up against the trans and gay man on the team.... I don't mind the changes to Sektor and Cyrax. I will say that I like lady Cyrax game play better in Mortal Kombat 1 then Cyrax in previous Mortal Kombat games mainly because of her athleticism combined with possible dance moves in her fighting while using the bombs, net, and I think it is some kind of foam when she stops the opponent from moving. Lady Sector should her game play come out it might be as good as lady Cyrax and if I could say one thing wrong about lady Sector is that she does not look as good looking as Cyrax.

You aren't the only one. That was literally the final nail in the coffin for me with this franchise. I refused to buy this game because of that and I'm done with MK unless someone who genuinely cares about the original timeline (and the fans) makes some changes at NRS. It's not the only reason... there have been so many reaons since WB bought the franchise.... it's been going downhill since then. I could give a long list of things wrong with it now. But ruining Scorpion and Sub-Zero was the final straw.
The gender swapping thing dont even be the biggest issue for me. Its the fact that they think we're stupid enough to just take that concept at face value. "look we gave cyrax a vagina, give us applause, isnt that interesting?" No, build upon that concept, have that impact their story in some huge, super interesting way if your gonna go this root. JUST gender swapping is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Its like I could get behind it, if writers in these different media companies made it interesting, but often they just shill out boring, lazy slop.
Cyrax regained his soul in MK4 thanks to Jax and Sonya. In DA he was working directly for the OWIA under Jax. Showing his face was a way to show he'd regained his humanity, since being turned into cyborgs was a tragedy. It was the catalyst for Sub-Zero (Kuai Liang) turning against the Lin Kuei and destroying the clan, only to rebuild it for good. While Sektor (the son of the original Lin Kuei Grandmaster) constantly fought to take back the Lin Kuei from Sub-Zero. Now, none of that is present. There seems to be no drawbacks from being cyberised. They're just Iron-Man suits from the looks of things and they emote all over the place showing they still have thoughts, feelings and souls. The Lin Kuei still exists while Kuai Liang left to establish the Shirai-Ryu. Bi Han and Kuai Liang were the sons of the Grandmaster, not Sektor. Basically, everything about the characters and the journeys they went through has been completely undermined. Just like everything else about MK and all the characters in it.
@EndoScorpion this is a reboot and new time line. New origins and new character back stories. We have no idea what will happen in the future for these new characters and their story arcs

Which means everything that happened, and all the things the characters went through, and all the reasons why we fell in love with these characters.... it's all been undermined and thrown out the window. They might as well not even use the names any more. They're not the same characters. NRS might as well just call them something else. Heck, at this point they might as well call the series something else because it's unrecognisable.

They'd start new story threads and new interesting character arcs only to reboot or just completely ignore that potential arc. They wasted SOOooo much potential. Sometimes even twice. We're not getting anything new either. Not since WB took over. MK2011 was MK1-3. MKX was MK4. While MK11 was Armageddon, before M1K did Deadly Alliance + Armageddon again. It's the same stuff but worse. They've merge characters, swapped characters, or just outright ignored characters, and that's not even including the gender-swaps. The only new concept they've added was multiverse crap, but it's not a new or interesting concept by any stretch. None of it has been since MKvsDC. And it's not really over-dramatic when this crap has been going on for 13 years, across 4 games (6 if you include the unoriginal Injustice games too). I've put up with it way too long, and they outright ruined one of my all-time favourite franchises in the process.

My biggest issue with NetherRealm deciding to make Cyrax and Sektor women is how they're disrespecting the original cyborg ninjas. Did you know that the last official time Cyrax and Sektor were playable in a Mortal Kombat game was in MK9? After this one game, the two have never been playable since. And no, Triborg from MKX doesn't count as he's his own separate entity that was created from the remains of the Cyber Lin Kuei, including the remains of dismantled/destroyed Cyrax and Sektor. And even then, there's debate on whether or not Triborg was even canon in the MKX story. And then, in MK11, where the two were reduced to being nothing but nonplayable jobbers that the Kombatants occasionally fight in that game's Story Mode. And now MK1 shows up, and NetherRealm decides to give the original Cyrax and Sektor the ultimate slap in the face by creating these new characters that outright steal the names of the original cyborg ninjas.
@xavierhouston4650 Even Johnny Cage? Cause he seems to be overall the same as he was in the previous timeline, minus the green energy. Sindel was overall better than that STUPID retcon in MK11. Reptile and Baraka are no longer jobbers as we've seen them acquire onscreen victories. And Kitana has an overall better relationship with Mileena than she ever had in previous timelines.

It's absolutely trash but the creators say that this era that Liu Kang created it's like a mirror version of mk11 you see.. and if so why not all male to became female and all the way around,, well they thought that it would work out but it didn't really.

Replacing Hanzo with Kuai and combining their conflicts with Bi han, would be like replacing Kabal with Sonya (Sonya the new Kabal) and combining the Kano conflicts. So, Sonya (codenamed "Kabal") was Black Dragon but Kano killed her brother so she left to join special forces and aimed to take down the Black Dragon, but was born with speed powers and breathing problems, but never had an accident or got burnt. Then she bangs the original Kabal's wife too, and they adopt the original Kabal who is a little child (I know he's not married but the Harumi stuff with Kuai is just sickening).
I personally don't mind the change. Reason being is that the mental image of Liu Kang saying "Ah Cyrax, my old friend... I'm going to make you into a big booty queen" to himself while remaking the universe is hilarious to me. The idea that female Cyrax and Sektor are just the result of Liu Kang using his godly powers to realise his rule 63 fetish is so fucking funny I can't help but get on board.
"Gameplay first"? That means you don't see the game characters as characters. You see play styles that can be put in any avatar. Which means you don't care if Baraka has Sub-Zero's playstyle or if they make Liu Kang or Shao Kahn women. You don't care about a character's identity and story and trademarks. Am I correct? Doesn't matter if Sweet Baby Inc was involved or not. Whatever NRS is doing, is destroying the MK identity and it feels like their characters and story never goes anywhere with all the reboots and re-imaginings.
The game is a absolute flop, the cameo mechanics are dumb, Jax, Sonya, and Kano not being playable is dumb, gender swaps are dumb for mk fans anticipated their favorite characters to return and have them change the gender wtf! Especially if the characters wasn’t in the previous mk games. The only good thing mk did was restart the mk timeline to come up with new ideas and direction in the mk stories. Just disappointing smh 🤦🏾♂️
These are business decisions to try and expand the player base and make the brand appear modern. As with the marvel comics (at least, when they first started doing gender swaps), these are mostly publicity stunts, and sometimes they have a genuine creative impulse behind them. But you do this over and over, it's just a cheap trick. Mortal Kombat has been mismanaged for decades, though. I think their successes were kind of flukes.

A timeless mk will never exist again. It feels and looks like a tacky free to play game. On top of that the whole theme and mysticism is completely dead and replaced with multiverse slop.
You definitely don't play if you think it feels any different than every other AAA NRS game. The gameplay is actually a lot busier than MK11 lol this one is so mf weird complex if you play fighting games. The characters are so well-rounded by any standard.

I mean im pretty indifferent on the gender swap. The cyber ninjas are some of my favorite characters but this gender swap doesnt actually matter when you think about the context, Boraicho got gender swapped, nightwolf almost did too and that probably would have been a huge improvement. Give me some sick costumes and maybe a classic skin with male grunts instead of female ones. I think the thing that people may not realize is that netherealm was trying to bring back fan favorites while increasing the female count in the game. i wonder how these "fans" would feel if netherealm had skipped cyrax and sektor and brought back kira and devorra instead.

@@xpowsimo8560 btw MK11 speed is very similar to MK1, MK10 as well. No need to mention other games than MK. Those other games are different. btw the 'speed thing' is all in the head. Also bear in mind, having a kameo character doing a bunch of moves the same time as the main character (in most cases) kinda trick the games into thinking the game is faster or slower.
I think this is my second favorite mortal kombat since the side characters like reptile are being more than just characters to beat in the story mode and I personally don’t mind the gender swap of cirax and sektor since their suits look cool and cirax gameplay looks fun
From what I can understand, nobody but Liu Kang is the actual same character from the previous games. We are Butterfly Effecting here. So both versions still exist.
I said the same thing about Kuai Liang being scorpion and ppl said I was overreacting or “it’s a new universe.” Two of my favorite characters are now gone and it keeps happening mostly to the Lin Kuei.
Despite the many flaws the game has I know this game still has potential I hope that the game doesn’t get cancelled or shut down because I want them to learn from their mistakes and that this game can and should be better.
I'm glad you said this. I think many of the bigger MK streamers are afraid to express opinions against gender swapped characters over fears of being called bigoted or sexist. Fans can see through what they're doing because it's been happening and they would never gender swap a female into a male character. This would be like if the MCU finally made another blade movie, but made him a female. Sure, it may not effect the story, but it's not the character the fans wanted. It's also blatantly unnecessary because MK is already one of the most diverse IPs out there.

Ive been playing MK since the release of the original in the arcades back in the day. Ive played every game except the Special Forces game. Im a big fan. I really don't like their decision of the Gender swap. I will continue to play however. I am aslo glad it's getting the push back. Fans voices need to be heard and Netherrealm needs to listen. Sure its their game to make but its our game to play. We need each other for the franchise to survive. I hope future decisions will consist of wiser choices.

The only reason I see as acceptable for a character change is if it makes sense story-wise. So, I expect an in-game explanation of why this change happened. It doesn't have to be some big thing: maybe Liu Kang changed them because he knows something will happen later, maybe he did it thinking that as women they have less chances of supporting Bi-Han's plan or being of use to him for whatever reason, or simply have them be the Sector and Cyrax fron titan Havic's world, where there is practically no need for an explanation -Havic is chaotic, so he my do things just because. But I expect a reason for the change. If their part could be played exactly the same by their original counterparts, then why change them at all?
I think I saw the video you are talking about and I had the same feelings. They complained that Cyrax is now black and that's bad because Lin Kuei are Chinese, but Cyrax was always from Africa, as far as MKIV confirmed it (dunno if it was mentioned in MK3 or Trilogy).
I know I'm not deeply ingrained in the Mortal Kombat community, but I find it strange that people are getting so upset over this decision. Whether NRS was pressured to change Cyrax and Sektor's gender or chose to do it on their own, why does it matter so much? From my perspective, Mortal Kombat 1 has been a complete reimagining of the entire series. Not every character behaves the same way they used to, and some changes are bound to be significant. NRS has ensured that the characters in MK1 still play like their previous versions, even if their backstory or context has shifted. As long as Cyrax and Sektor play just like you'd expect them to, does it really matter if their gender is different? If someone could explain why this is such a big deal, I'd appreciate it, because from my point of view, it seems like people are upset over nothing.
It's more of a "We're sick to death of this shit" kinda thing. The Comics Gate thing he talked about at the start is a good way to explain it. All the characters you know and love get race or gender swapped for diversity points and ESG reasons. It's happened so much, so often in the last couple of years that people are sick to death of it and being called toxic or misogynistic or some kind of phobic if their sexuality is a big part of the random change....like how DC made one of the Robins randomly bisexual for no other reason than diversity even though that character in all previous comics had been completely straight with not a hint of bisexual leanings at all. The big issue with the female Sektor and Cyrax is taking the characters names, two very popular characters among fans mind you, and giving them to these gender flipped versions when they could have been new characters with new names connected to Sektor and Cyrax like the skit at the start...it just feels hollow and done for the sake of ESG and Diversity quotas.
In-universe, this doesn’t make sense. How does turning them into women contribute to peace and a second chance? Cyrax wanted his humanity back and got repaid with turning into a woman and living through a SIMILAR Cyber Initiative AGAIN. Also, most people want to play as THE character not another version of that same character, unless it’s a cool change.
Honestly I find it ridiculous for people to make a f-ing big deal about gentrifying characters like Cyrax & Sektor when most of the characters in MK1 have been structurally also change as well in other certain aspects about them given this new timeline era. 1. Certain occupational roles - Scorpion is now Kuai Liang instead Hanzo and is also not a spectre/demon of the Netherealm. As well as Rain who is a high mage wizard and not god or son of Argus. 2. Alignment of Characters - For like Mileena, Reptile, Baraka, Tanya are no coherently evil and don't serve under Shang Tsung or Shao who is also not Khan in this timeline. 3. Family members are now different - Such as Mileena & Kitana also Scorpion & Sub-Zero that are canonically sisters & brothers. Takeda is Kenshi's cousin and not son and Raiden who's has a sister that is also possibily gentrify as Fujin. And I don't even want to start on the fact of race swapping when clearly Rain who has gone through multiple MK games with a different skin tone change. Seriously look up on all of Rain's evolution from MK3 to now where he varies to white & dark skin and no one makes a BS complaints about that. So why even make a complaint about any of that now just for the sake of making an arguments!? I'm more than fine with having just only being Sektor & Cyrax being female as long their is compelling story for them and interesting roles, especially going of their bio which is more than what the original ketchup & mustard had for their lore. And let me just end this by saying that MK1 is not in the same trenches as other games like Suicide Squad where that game is much deserve hate for. The game has sold over 4 million copies worldwide over and despite major hiccups with the games netcode, and other stuff it's trying to turn for the better like how SF5 did when it initially release and is now in a better spot..

Never saw Cyrax and Sektor as mainstay front runners, they’ve always been secondary pallete swaps not Sub-Zero/Scorpion or Liu/Raiden/Cage/etc. Replacing Scorpion’s Hanzo identity with Kuai Lang’s is an offense with far more validity as it partially ruins both of the mainstays, essentially replacing Scorpion’s character with Sub-Zero’s. I don’t mind diversity inclusions for secondary characters, it’s like Domino being black in Deadpool 2, nobody cares cause she’s never been a front runner. Also from the trailers, Cyrax and Sektor have never been this well developed before so. Bi-Han’s characterization from how he was in his standalone game to this garbage is far worse.

i am so tired of the hate towards them being females now, its a damn new universe build by lui and tried to make it peaceful. we new from mk11 endings that there were gonna be gender swaps, no one was complaining then. has anyone ever thought maybe ed boon always had alternative version of a character he wanted to in a new univese, i can see the diffrence between good and bad changes and is not a bad change. NRS didnt even give enough screen time for much character development anyone for this to be bad, they mk9 had 2 chapters of character development then just became mindless javas for the rest of the game, mkx they were only used for plot and dlc but got nerfed and become mid, mk11they came back for 2 different chapters just to die right away with cyrax getting maybe 3 minutes of more development, then dies again. so far in the trailers theyre gonna have more screen time for more development now, and its promising it looks like. why is no one complaining about changes for theyre favorite characters like luiraiden, reptile, baraka, mileena, kitana ect, some bad guys being good now. at this point people will hate anything mk1 puts out because of the trend, if all the pro players say they like the change, people will do a 180 switch up like they they do on the opions of how good a character comp wise.
I don't like it because it feels like they're replacements instead of substitutes. Frost is a SUBSTITUTE to Sub Zero because she's close enough to what he's like but also unique in her own way, she has her own quirks and goals, making her feel fleshed out, she can be liked by the fans because she doesn't pretend to be the same character as Sub Zero. But this version of Sektor and Cyrax are straight up, raw, unapologetic REPLACEMENTS, completely wiping out the legacy and character developments of the original Sektor and Cyrax which is what fans of those characters like the most, not yo mention they erase what made them truly iconic: They are supposed to be ROBOT ninjas, that's what made them truly unique and special, plus the dramatic topic of the cyborg initiative revolving around abandoning humanity in favour of evolving using technology was very captivating and interesting to discuss. But now it's just two random people cosplaying ironman, which is something already seen and explored, it's not as interesting or unique. Also, it reduces Sektor and Cyrax to being items instead of their own fleshed out characters, they are now soulless armor pieces instead of their own characters.

All fighting game sales are down from there previous titles. Compare street fighter 6 to sf5. Compare tekken 8 to tekken 7 and compare launch and equivalent time frame sales and you will see a trend. And with that being said mk1 has still outsold BOTH franchises.
I've owned this game since launch and still haven't gotten around to playing it because of all the bad press and how boring it is to watch at high level.
Sektor is voiced by one of my favourite people on the planet, Erika Ishii, so I'm hype for this, despite the fact that I haven't played MK1 since Quan Chi got released.
Actually most people complaining about it are probably people that have been playing mortal kombat since before you were a twinkle in your daddy's eye. We don't like it when you shit all over our lore our favorite characters for no reason other than to say look it's a strong female character now... this is mortal kombat the rings of power levels of shit. Guess I'm just old now and they don't want my money anymore. O well

Ed Boon changing Cyrax and Sektor to female always felt like a troll. Considering that the community has been being asking for more female fighter and asking for the cyborgs for years, Boon just combined both ideas.

Technically there's no such thing as race. We're all part of the human species. There is no scientific term nor distinction between us all beyond that. The idea of "race" is a social construct. Just like how "vegetable" is a culinary term, not a botanical one.
No matter what NRS do folks are going to complain. You can't please nobody like this MK game is a whole new story so things are going to change and we have the OGs as a cameo so they are in the game. Before folks judge and be butthurt just see how the new story gose then be mad or glad.

In mk9 cyrax and sektor only had their faces shown before they were cyborgs. You subconsciously proved the commentary channel’s point for them. Additionally, SBI and DEI consultants in general work with netherealm studio’s parent company. Do you not think that influences the decisions -and hiring practices at NRS?
Sektor and Cyrax are fan favorite characters who haven’t been playable since MK9 and now they return after 13 years only for them to be females and a lot of people including myself don’t like seeing them gender swapped .
It seems that older gamers like myself that remember mk arriving in the arcade find this more annoying. When you follow a franchise that long you expect changes, but the whole gender swap thing is unnecessary in a game with a ton of strong female characters. It just gets tiresome because it's obvious it's not done for fans, it's at this point almost like being nagged by people who want to make you look like a misogynist because you don't like characters you've enjoyed forever getting the swap. It's not creative, interesting, or in any way improving mk. It's lazy, done to death, and I almost expect it at this point.
I dont hate this game. I have more fun with this than I did with MK11. The Cyrax and Sektor thing doesnt bother me. In Sektors new bio its revealed she is Sektors daughter and is taking his place after he retired. Im guessing Cyrax is the same. The characters and combot look cool enough so far i dont care they are now females

This may be an unpopular opinion but I actually think that the new designs for Sektor and Cyrax look fine, for me, there’s nothing to hate on, when I look at it, people are just used to the old designs and are blinded by nostalgia. I mean, name one thing to hate on and I will probably never hate the designs, they’re pretty cool. The only thing I’m Iffy with is the voice acting, it’s not bad, it’s just that I sort of miss the robotic voice they had in Mk11. I mean, it’s just a gender swap, it’s not gonna kill you.
I think there is too much hatred towards the latest projects that are put out, at least from my POV. Star Wars with Acolyte, M1K with its decisions, and even more. I haven't noticed that much hate in the last games or movies, so why is it so extreme these days?

No shortage of female characters already. It's becoming a lazy way of character development and it's probably not done because they think fans are gonna love it. They are aware that some people find it tiresome and can just pull out the misogyny accusations if complaining gets too loud. I'm 50 and remember them rolling mk into the arcade while I was playing Street Fighter 2 and I've invested a lot of time in the franchise over the years. This is one of those things that makes me sigh, shrug, and keep playing.
M1K deserves the hate. NRS have been spitting in the face of the (lore) fans since the first reboot. But M1K takes that to a whole new level with NRS smearing crap in our faces. Gender/race-swapping characters is already bad enough, swapping Raiden and Liu Kang was annoying, while resetting and rebooting the series over and over again was infuriating. The thing that broke the camels back for me was replacing Hanzo with Kuai. All the stuff they're doing with Harumi now is just insult to injury, like defiling a dead body. The movies aren't much better either - whether it's animated or live action. None of them show respect to the source material (neither do the games since WB bought Midway). I don't trust WB or NRS with the franchise any more. And I refuse to give any money towards supporting the direction they've take it. MK (2011) started digging the grave while M1K was the final nail in the coffin for me.

I don't mind the changes to Sektor and Cyrax. I will say that I like lady Cyrax game play better in Mortal Kombat 1 then Cyrax in previous Mortal Kombat games mainly because of her athleticism combined with possible dance moves in her fighting while using the bombs, net, and I think it is some kind of foam when she stops the opponent from moving. Lady Sector should her game play come out it might be as good as lady Cyrax and if I could say one thing wrong about lady Sector is that she does not look as good looking as Cyrax.

You aren't the only one. That was literally the final nail in the coffin for me with this franchise. I refused to buy this game because of that and I'm done with MK unless someone who genuinely cares about the original timeline (and the fans) makes some changes at NRS.

The gender swapping thing dont even be the biggest issue for me. Its the fact that they think we're stupid enough to just take that concept at face value. "look we gave cyrax a vagina, give us applause, isnt that interesting?" No, build upon that concept, have that impact their story in some huge, super interesting way if your gonna go this root. JUST gender swapping is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Its like I could get behind it, if writers in these different media companies made it interesting, but often they just shill out boring, lazy slop.

About MK1 Cyrax showing face thing, this character also had a alternate costume with face shown in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
Cyrax regained his soul in MK4 thanks to Jax and Sonya. In DA he was working directly for the OWIA under Jax. Showing his face was a way to show he'd regained his humanity, since being turned into cyborgs was a tragedy. It was the catalyst for Sub-Zero (Kuai Liang) turning against the Lin Kuei and destroying the clan, only to rebuild it for good. While Sektor (the son of the original Lin Kuei Grandmaster) constantly fought to take back the Lin Kuei from Sub-Zero.
Now, none of that is present. There seems to be no drawbacks from being cyberised. They're just Iron-Man suits from the looks of things and they emote all over the place showing they still have thoughts, feelings and souls. The Lin Kuei still exists while Kuai Liang left to establish the Shirai-Ryu. Bi Han and Kuai Liang were the sons of the Grandmaster, not Sektor.
Basically, everything about the characters and the journeys they went through has been completely undermined. Just like everything else about MK and all the characters in it.
@EndoScorpion this is a reboot and new time line. New origins and new character back stories. We have no idea what will happen in the future for these new characters and their story arcs

They'd start new story threads and new interesting character arcs only to reboot or just completely ignore that potential arc. They wasted SOOooo much potential. Sometimes even twice.
We're not getting anything new either. Not since WB took over. MK2011 was MK1-3. MKX was MK4. While MK11 was Armageddon, before M1K did Deadly Alliance + Armageddon again.
It's the same stuff but worse. They've merge characters, swapped characters, or just outright ignored characters, and that's not even including the gender-swaps. The only new concept they've added was multiverse crap, but it's not a new or interesting concept by any stretch. None of it has been since MKvsDC.
And it's not really over-dramatic when this crap has been going on for 13 years, across 4 games (6 if you include the unoriginal Injustice games too). I've put up with it way too long, and they outright ruined one of my all-time favourite franchises in the process.

Honestly this is the least of the problems that MK1 has... For example balance, bugs, bad monetization, bad alternative gameplay, bad fan service , just a bad product , gameplay is fun yeah... with some friends for the lulz , but not for going tryhard or competitive ..
My biggest issue with NetherRealm deciding to make Cyrax and Sektor women is how they're disrespecting the original cyborg ninjas. Did you know that the last official time Cyrax and Sektor were playable in a Mortal Kombat game was in MK9? After this one game, the two have never been playable since. And no, Triborg from MKX doesn't count as he's his own separate entity that was created from the remains of the Cyber Lin Kuei, including the remains of dismantled/destroyed Cyrax and Sektor. And even then, there's debate on whether or not Triborg was even canon in the MKX story. And then, in MK11, where the two were reduced to being nothing but nonplayable jobbers that the Kombatants occasionally fight in that game's Story Mode. And now MK1 shows up, and NetherRealm decides to give the original Cyrax and Sektor the ultimate slap in the face by creating these new characters that outright steal the names of the original cyborg ninjas.

Replacing Hanzo with Kuai and combining their conflicts with Bi han, would be like replacing Kabal with Sonya (Sonya the new Kabal) and combining the Kano conflicts.
So, Sonya (codenamed "Kabal") was Black Dragon but Kano killed her brother so she left to join special forces and aimed to take down the Black Dragon, but was born with speed powers and breathing problems, but never had an accident or got burnt. Then she bangs the original Kabal's wife too, and they adopt the original Kabal who is a little child (I know he's not married but the Harumi stuff with Kuai is just sickening).
I personally don't mind the change. Reason being is that the mental image of Liu Kang saying "Ah Cyrax, my old friend... I'm going to make you into a big booty queen" to himself while remaking the universe is hilarious to me.
The idea that female Cyrax and Sektor are just the result of Liu Kang using his godly powers to realise his rule 63 fetish is so fucking funny I can't help but get on board.

The game is a absolute flop, the cameo mechanics are dumb, Jax, Sonya, and Kano not being playable is dumb, gender swaps are dumb for mk fans anticipated their favorite characters to return and have them change the gender wtf! Especially if the characters wasn’t in the previous mk games. The only good thing mk did was restart the mk timeline to come up with new ideas and direction in the mk stories. These are business decisions to try and expand the player base and make the brand appear modern. As with the marvel comics (at least, when they first started doing gender swaps), these are mostly publicity stunts, and sometimes they have a genuine creative impulse behind them. But you do this over and over, it's just a cheap trick.
Mortal Kombat has been mismanaged for decades, though. I think their successes were kind of flukes.

The cyber ninjas are some of my favorite characters but this gender swap doesnt actually matter when you think about the context, Boraicho got gender swapped, nightwolf almost did too and that probably would have been a huge improvement. Give me some sick costumes and maybe a classic skin with male grunts instead of female ones. I think the thing that people may not realize is that netherealm was trying to bring back fan favorites while increasing the female count in the game. i wonder how these "fans" would feel if netherealm had skipped cyrax and sektor and brought back kira and devorra instead.

Also bear in mind, having a kameo character doing a bunch of moves the same time as the main character (in most cases) kinda trick the games into thinking the game is faster or slower.

I think this is my second favorite mortal kombat since the side characters like reptile are being more than just characters to beat in the story mode and I personally don’t mind the gender swap of cirax and sektor since their suits look cool and cirax gameplay looks fun
From what I can understand, nobody but Liu Kang is the actual same character from the previous games. We are Butterfly Effecting here. So both versions still exist.
I said the same thing about Kuai Liang being scorpion and ppl said I was overreacting or “it’s a new universe.” Two of my favorite characters are now gone and it keeps happening mostly to the Lin Kuei.
Hopefully this mess will be put to an end soon enough. If this will keep going like this, the mortal kombat will just straight up die all together :/

I'm glad you said this. I think many of the bigger MK streamers are afraid to express opinions against gender swapped characters over fears of being called bigoted or sexist. Fans can see through what they're doing because it's been happening and they would never gender swap a female into a male character. This would be like if the MCU finally made another blade movie, but made him a female. Sure, it may not effect the story, but it's not the character the fans wanted. It's also blatantly unnecessary because MK is already one of the most diverse IPs out there.

The only reason I see as acceptable for a character change is if it makes sense story-wise. So, I expect an in-game explanation of why this change happened. It doesn't have to be some big thing: maybe Liu Kang changed them because he knows something will happen later, maybe he did it thinking that as women they have less chances of supporting Bi-Han's plan or being of use to him for whatever reason, or simply have them be the Sector and Cyrax fron titan Havic's world, where there is practically no need for an explanation -Havic is chaotic, so he my do things just because. But I expect a reason for the change. If their part could be played exactly the same by their original counterparts, then why change them at all?

I think I saw the video you are talking about and I had the same feelings. They complained that Cyrax is now black and that's bad because Lin Kuei are Chinese, but Cyrax was always from Africa, as far as MKIV confirmed it (dunno if it was mentioned in MK3 or Trilogy).

I know I'm not deeply ingrained in the Mortal Kombat community, but I find it strange that people are getting so upset over this decision. Whether NRS was pressured to change Cyrax and Sektor's gender or chose to do it on their own, why does it matter so much? From my perspective, Mortal Kombat 1 has been a complete reimagining of the entire series. Not every character behaves the same way they used to, and some changes are bound to be significant. NRS has ensured that the characters in MK1 still play like their previous versions, even if their backstory or context has shifted. As long as Cyrax and Sektor play just like you'd expect them to, does it really matter if their gender is different?
If someone could explain why this is such a big deal, I'd appreciate it, because from my point of view, it seems like people are upset over nothing.
It's more of a "We're sick to death of this shit" kinda thing. The Comics Gate thing he talked about at the start is a good way to explain it. All the characters you know and love get race or gender swapped for diversity points and ESG reasons. It's happened so much, so often in the last couple of years that people are sick to death of it and being called toxic or misogynistic or some kind of phobic if their sexuality is a big part of the random change....like how DC made one of the Robins randomly bisexual for no other reason than diversity even though that character in all previous comics had been completely straight with not a hint of bisexual leanings at all. The big issue with the female Sektor and Cyrax is taking the characters names, two very popular characters among fans mind you, and giving them to these gender flipped versions when they could have been new characters with new names connected to Sektor and Cyrax like the skit at the start...it just feels hollow and done for the sake of ESG and Diversity quotas.
In-universe, this doesn’t make sense. How does turning them into women contribute to peace and a second chance? Cyrax wanted his humanity back and got repaid with turning into a woman and living through a SIMILAR Cyber Initiative AGAIN.
Also, most people want to play as THE character not another version of that same character, unless it’s a cool change.
This kind of thinking is exactly why mk is unrecognizable
Honestly I find it ridiculous for people to make a f-ing big deal about gentrifying characters like Cyrax & Sektor when most of the characters in MK1 have been structurally also change as well in other certain aspects about them given this new timeline era.
1. Certain occupational roles - Scorpion is now Kuai Liang instead Hanzo and is also not a spectre/demon of the Netherealm. As well as Rain who is a high mage wizard and not god or son of Argus.
2. Alignment of Characters - For like Mileena, Reptile, Baraka, Tanya are no coherently evil and don't serve under Shang Tsung or Shao who is also not Khan in this timeline.
3. Family members are now different - Such as Mileena & Kitana also Scorpion & Sub-Zero that are canonically sisters & brothers. Takeda is Kenshi's cousin and not son and Raiden who's has a sister that is also possibily gentrify as Fujin.
And I don't even want to start on the fact of race swapping when clearly Rain who has gone through multiple MK games with a different skin tone change. Seriously look up on all of Rain's evolution from MK3 to now where he varies to white & dark skin and no one makes a BS complaints about that. So why even make a complaint about any of that now just for the sake of making an arguments!?
I'm more than fine with having just only being Sektor & Cyrax being female as long their is compelling story for them and interesting roles, especially going of their bio which is more than what the original ketchup & mustard had for their lore.
And let me just end this by saying that MK1 is not in the same trenches as other games like Suicide Squad where that game is much deserve hate for. The game has sold over 4 million copies worldwide over and despite major hiccups with the games netcode, and other stuff it's trying to turn for the better like how SF5 did when it initially release and is now in a better spot..

Never saw Cyrax and Sektor as mainstay front runners, they’ve always been secondary pallete swaps not Sub-Zero/Scorpion or Liu/Raiden/Cage/etc. Replacing Scorpion’s Hanzo identity with Kuai Lang’s is an offense with far more validity as it partially ruins both of the mainstays, essentially replacing Scorpion’s character with Sub-Zero’s. I don’t mind diversity inclusions for secondary characters, it’s like Domino being black in Deadpool 2, nobody cares cause she’s never been a front runner. Also from the trailers, Cyrax and Sektor have never been this well developed before so. Bi-Han’s characterization from how he was in his standalone game to this garbage is far worse.
I really could care less about the cyborgs. Let’s be real cyrax or sektor are not on most people’s top 5 list maybe even top 10

i am so tired of the hate towards them being females now, its a damn new universe build by lui and tried to make it peaceful. we new from mk11 endings that there were gonna be gender swaps, no one was complaining then. has anyone ever thought maybe ed boon always had alternative version of a character he wanted to in a new univese, i can see the diffrence between good and bad changes and is not a bad change. NRS didnt even give enough screen time for much character development anyone for this to be bad, they mk9 had 2 chapters of character development then just became mindless javas for the rest of the game, mkx they were only used for plot and dlc but got nerfed and become mid, mk11they came back for 2 different chapters just to die right away with cyrax getting maybe 3 minutes of more development, then dies again. so far in the trailers theyre gonna have more screen time for more development now, and its promising it looks like. why is no one complaining about changes for theyre favorite characters like luiraiden, reptile, baraka, mileena, kitana ect, some bad guys being good now. at this point people will hate anything mk1 puts out because of the trend, if all the pro players say they like the change, people will do a 180 switch up like they they do on the opions of how good a character comp wise.
I don't like it because it feels like they're replacements instead of substitutes.
Frost is a SUBSTITUTE to Sub Zero because she's close enough to what he's like but also unique in her own way, she has her own quirks and goals, making her feel fleshed out, she can be liked by the fans because she doesn't pretend to be the same character as Sub Zero.
But this version of Sektor and Cyrax are straight up, raw, unapologetic REPLACEMENTS, completely wiping out the legacy and character developments of the original Sektor and Cyrax which is what fans of those characters like the most, not yo mention they erase what made them truly iconic: They are supposed to be ROBOT ninjas, that's what made them truly unique and special, plus the dramatic topic of the cyborg initiative revolving around abandoning humanity in favour of evolving using technology was very captivating and interesting to discuss.
But now it's just two random people cosplaying ironman, which is something already seen and explored, it's not as interesting or unique. Also, it reduces Sektor and Cyrax to being items instead of their own fleshed out characters, they are now soulless armor pieces instead of their own characters.
I honestly dont think it's a huge issue at all and is kind of blown out of proportion. Im completely fine with change and am willing to adapt.

All fighting game sales are down from there previous titles. Compare street fighter 6 to sf5. Compare tekken 8 to tekken 7 and compare launch and equivalent time frame sales and you will see a trend. It seems that older gamers like myself that remember mk arriving in the arcade find this more annoying. When you follow a franchise that long you expect changes, but the whole gender swap thing is unnecessary in a game with a ton of strong female characters. It just gets tiresome because it's obvious it's not done for fans, it's at this point almost like being nagged by people who want to make you look like a misogynist because you don't like characters you've enjoyed forever getting the swap. It's not creative, interesting, or in any way improving mk. It's lazy, done to death, and I almost expect it at this point.

This may be an unpopular opinion but I actually think that the new designs for Sektor and Cyrax look fine, for me, there’s nothing to hate on, when I look at it, people are just used to the old designs and are blinded by nostalgia. I mean, name one thing to hate on and I will probably never hate the designs, they’re pretty cool. The only thing I’m Iffy with is the voice acting, it’s not bad, it’s just that I sort of miss the robotic voice they had in Mk11. I mean, it’s just a gender swap, it’s not gonna kill you.

In your world Kronika and Liu Kang are real people. In our world they're fictional characters. "Their vision" is the devs vision. And they decided it was a good idea two totally needlessly change the gender of yet again male characters. Why never female to male? Why? WHY?!! ANSWER ME GOD DAMNIT !!!

No shortage of female characters already. It's becoming a lazy way of character development and it's probably not done because they think fans are gonna love it. They are aware that some people find it tiresome and can just pull out the misogyny accusations if complaining gets too loud. I'm 50 and remember them rolling mk into the arcade while I was playing Street Fighter 2 and I've invested a lot of time in the franchise over the years. This is one of those things that makes me sigh, shrug, and keep playing.
Nah mk1 is just mashing heavy no one likes to respect anything and you have to play a top tier to have any semblance of fun
M1K deserves the hate. NRS have been spitting in the face of the (lore) fans since the first reboot. But M1K takes that to a whole new level with NRS smearing crap in our faces.
Gender/race-swapping characters is already bad enough, swapping Raiden and Liu Kang was annoying, while resetting and rebooting the series over and over again was infuriating. The thing that broke the camels back for me was replacing Hanzo with Kuai. All the stuff they're doing with Harumi now is just insult to injury, like defiling a dead body.
The movies aren't much better either - whether it's animated or live action. None of them show respect to the source material (neither do the games since WB bought Midway).
I don't trust WB or NRS with the franchise any more. And I refuse to give any money towards supporting the direction they've take it.
MK (2011) started digging the grave while M1K was the final nail in the coffin for me.
I'm okay with Cyrax and Sektor being DLC and Cameos and I'm okay with them showing their faces,
