Majority of Island Wiped Out by Major Eruption; Ruang Volcano Aftermath

- One of the strongest volcanic eruptions on the planet in the last decade occurred yesterday. As a result, a majority of a populated island was rendered uninhabited, and hundreds of homes in addition to other structures were damaged or destroyed. This video discusses the Ruang volcano's plinian eruption, which lasted for 130 minutes. However, I want to remind everyone that Ruang is still erupting, albeit at a lower intensity than witnessed on April 17th.

I am quite glad that eruptive activity drastically decreased today with far less VT quakes and volcanic tremor.
...my partner lives just outside Cebu City (Philippines) and there is a very fine grey coloured dust layer covering everything in their area...
@@jimihendrix991Thank you for reporting.

Thank goodness. 👍👍👍
Your volcanic updates are timely, not sensationalized and supremely factual. Simply put: Your reporting is the best out there. I hope all the locals stay safe. ❤

Well put.

Gosh, Indonesian volcanoes don't play. They are so amazingly active and mad! Take care brothers! Saya dari Filipina.
they literally live in the "ring of fire" zone, scary stuff

Ferries have already transported a portion of the elderly population, children, and women to Manado. In the upcoming days, additional ferries will transport many more people away from Ruang.
Many of the houses' zinc roofs have been punctured by volcanic stones, causing rainwater to seep inside and damage appliances and furniture. It will take a few days to assess the extent of the damage in the exclusion area.
Thanks for the explanation and for the support
Last night it rained again in Tagulandang, further damaging the houses. Unfortunately the weather forecast doesn't look good, new rains are expected this week.
Some locals are now in Bahoi and Buhias (in the exclusion zone) trying to fix the zinc roofs...
Part of my family is now safe in Manado. Some of my oncles couldn't leave last night. Priority was seniors, women and kids.
@@enriccatala8317thank you for the update, I hope everyone makes it out ok.
New explosion happening right now (17:49 WITA - UTC+8). A big column of smoke is visible from Tagulandang. Locals report a small earthquake.
Many thanks to the person who granted use of the video.
Indeed. And I hope that person stays safe.
I flew into Bali from Singapore. All I saw almost the whole way was Volcanos. When I walked out onto the beach in Bali I looked to my right and saw two volcanoes practically next to each other. The Australians at my hotel told me you need to monitor volcanic events as there’s something like 265 active volcanoes in the country. Beautiful place
That night time video with the red ejection, smoke, and lightning... that's some Mount Doom footage.
Sauron, Lord of the Earth, approves of this comment.
Frodo!
Thanks for the update. This was an even bigger eruption than what occurred in 1871 by the looks of things, so it was amazing no tsunami occurred so far.
no tsunamis because they set off an explosive charge in the volcano to cause a premature eruption which would reduce the severity of future eruptions or catastrophes
because there's no part of land submerged into the ocean.
i'm glad people evacuated or there would have been significant casualties based on your information
thanks for the update
I'm glad too, we got enough freaks in government & the pharma industry trying to kill us as is.
They were already in the gradual process of evacuating due to the previous day's activity, this sure made them go into panic mode and hastened the process though.
This reminds me of Krakatoa back in the day. Except, this island hasn’t been obliterated, yet. Krakatoa had multiple eruptions many months prior, that disrupted many islands nearby. Then absolute destruction and the loudest eruption ever recorded, then the tsunami.
Thanks as always. The eruption was wild, and it is a total miracle that there are no fatalities known so far. The footage was beautiful, fascinating, but also blood-curdling and eerie! I hope everyone in the vicinity is doing well.
A similar view for those watching Vesuvius erupt in 79 AD far enough away to witness but too far away to help their friends.
Such was the case with Pliny the Younger who was able to escape to the other of a bay near Vesuvius and thus survive. His father Pliny the Elder was engaged in trying to rescue people from the eruption was not so lucky.
Pretty sure that was a VEI5 eruption, but otherwise very accurate.
@@michaeldeierhoi4096 Is that where the term Plinian eruption comes from?
@@anonymouse8124 Yes
@@Solidaritas1 It did not have enough ejecta to get to a VEI 5. As an example Vesuvius was estimated at VEI 5 with over 1 km³ of ejecta whereas Ruang produced barely .35 km³.
Wow. Those poor people
This is a good example of "That escalated quickly."
CCC check the note to be added to description for PayPal. It says Belief not Relief. Incase you want to correct it😊
some ignorance comments. not everyone will has fancy life far away from volcanoes🙄 people will try everything just to get a better living even to live close to the volcanos because of good soil and material. At least they try to work and didn't become beggars
True, extremely rich ground, even Japanese people grow food on Sakujima.
They forget most places have some kind of disaster to deal with.
Thanks for todays update with changing stats.I think this is the best coverage I have in a long time. Greg in Canada 🇨🇦.. 😊.
There was at least 1 detected lightning strike from this eruption that surpassed 100kA!
Volcanoes are so beautiful, but I feel awful for all the poor little animals that get caught up in the devastation. Hopefully the people of the island are able to recover without losing everything ❤
Animals are sensitive to these things. Those that could flee did so before this occurred. And many more probably tried swimming across the channel even if their species is not known for such behavior.
Thank you so much for this video. Glad the folks were evacuated in time.
Wow! That's crazy, thanks for the update.❤
It is no wonder ancient people worshipped volcanos.
Especially when they lived near them!
It's always good to hear that there were no casualties. But it got me thinking that if this is "just" a 4 well, I almost shudder to think what a higher VEI eruption would have looked like.
A question I had though is this: Is it possible that this eruption or any other eruption could have created a landbridge and thus united these two islands? The strait between seems pretty narrow. Or would some mechanic have to come into play aswell for that to happen?
EDIT: Thanks to everyone for the replies.
i think it would be the opposite. when volcano explode, it will collapse and create a caldera, and the volcano island will dissappear (or most of it) under the sea. krakatoa and the tonga volcano were like this.
It will probably be hundreds to thousands of years of eruptions before a land bridge could be created to the larger island northeast of Ruang.
That's quite unlikely simply by volume. The island is about 4km across and now approximately 700m at the summit. At the narrowest the two islands are about 1km apart and the water is reasonably deep.
If the northern flank of the volcano would collapse [like Mt St-Helens for example] it would probably not be enough material to slide over that widest part of the island and into the strait to fill it all up to form a landbridge.
If additionally large amounts of lava would be released after the collapse, and followed the same path as the landslide it would increase the possibility of a caldera forming, where the landmass collapses inward into the cavity that formed underground from the magma spilling out, which would in turn make all or most of the island disappear under water until the volcano builds it up again in future eruptions.
Thanks for all of your hard work man!
Oh wow.. How frightening. I hope everyone has made it to safety. Pyroclastic so awful. Thank you for this coverage.
Such beautiful environment comes with a volatile character.
Bless all those around, including flora and fauna.
Thank You for the update. I'll pop some $ next week.

Thanks for the timely and easy to understand update.
That town on the coast would be the scariest place on earth today. Sometimes nature has to remind us how insignificant we are and what real power is
I watched this video clip shortly after it was posted. There are so many lightning flashes that I feared for anyone with epilepsy who happened across it because I couldn't follow all of them.
Good point! GH, could you post a 'flashing lights' warning where appropriate in future?
The list of volcanoes was quite interesting in revealing the basic stats about the VEI, SO2 released and so on. 500,000 tons of SO2 was reported to be released by this eruption of Mt Ruang. This seems like a lot until compared to the eruptions toward the top of the list.
El Chichon produced 750,000 tons of SO2 which was enough to produce minor global cooling in 1982. Mt Pinatubo produced 12,000,000 tons of SO2 which led to a 1 F global cooling for about a year.
This is an indication of the huge amount of SO2 necessary to significantly cool the climate.
Thank you for the update ❤️🔥🌄
Beautiful picture detail
Wow😮 it's amazing and sading at the same time!
This is i believe the only disadvantage of living within the shadows of these fascinating monsters. likewise, they give far more benefits than harming people.
2oooM high lava fountain....holy wow.
Amazing coverage. Basically 24 hours ahead of news coverage from searching.
Thanks for the update man.
I can't wait till one of you youngbloods write a book discussing evacuation procedures and what happens to those that have to be evacuated due to volcano related disasters, such as here and in Iceland.

Wow!...Indonesian 🌋 volcanoes are extreme !!
Scary too!
It's what stratovolcanoes can do when they only erupt every few decades. Main thing is that Indonesia is covered in loads of them and many are close to populations and many of them erupt semi-regularly at least.
Indonesia is on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Meaning that the Volcanos of Kamchatka, the Cascades, Japan, Philippines, and Tonga are all part of the same caliber of volcanoes as Indonesia.
@@davidford3115 but Indonesia has the most number of active volcanoes
Volcanoes are like our cosmic mothers. I live in Central Java, near one active one. We learn to embrace her.
Terrifyingly beautiful 🌩️
Mesmerizing and terrifying
24 hour news cycles are boring, no variety. Feels like only 1 story is covered per day. Your coverage is great, full of details. Thank you.
The Pacific ring of fire has certainly been living up to its name in recent years.
We were Just treated to the insanity of Hunga Tonga and now this.
Tonga was epic. It would have been unimaginable had it been on land vs submarine
Hunga Tonga has Sinking. . .
Wow that is quite the eruption! Glad there appear to be no casualties and hope it will stay that way.
Looks like something out of a movie
My understanding is that the Etna eruption was used for the volcanic planet in Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.
A imagem por satélite desta ilha, impressiona quando vemos um colossal derramamento de lava já solidificada que alcança o oceano. Eu não consigo imaginar a magnitude da erupção que gerou uma torrente de lava tão grande.
Awesome Info! Thank You!
Thanks for that detailed update ..

I hope everyone is ok. That was a beautiful light show.

Is there a difference between Lapilli and Pumice? I thought Pumice was what plinian eruptions produced
Basically... Pumice is formed from free flowing lava and has thousands of little holes... Lapilli is airborne and is Latin for "little stones" so nearly the opposite of one another
Good luck to all those involved and hopefully things will calm down over the coming days and weeks. I would donate but I do not have a PayPal account.
I didn't know the phrase "Plinian eruption" existed, but it makes perfect sense. Let us hope everyone got out safely.
Thank you
Thank you. Peace
I tried to donate via the PayPal link you provided, but the search could not find it. Any other thoughts on how to help?
I have made a donation to the Paypal address you mentioned. I hope this helps those affected by the volcanic eruption and that many others have done the same.😊
Thanks
Pretty! And new fertile soil.
Incredible photo with the lightning
Is there a way to donate besides PayPal?
Phucken wow ❤ big love to everyone there
500,000 tons of sulphur dioxide was released? That's an enormous amount.
so much for climate initiatives..
2 KILOMETRE high lava plume! I can only hope that people in the big city are safe somehow.
The volcanic island of Ruang is located near a subduction zone so we can assume that the fault is being activated, increasing the probability of earthquakes and tsunamis near the island in the future.
The tectonics in that area, especially to the East of these islands is oddly interesting. I would love to hear his assessment of how the tectonics there are moving.
@@jokerace8227He already talked about the Molucca Sea Plate in his other videos about Mt Ruang, Mt Dukono, and the Tondano Caldera

👋🏻👴🏼 nice video as always
🥺💔 i hope there is help for the dear people.
2km lava fountain is crazy wow
Incredible how fast this volcano went from 0-100
It would be wonderful to find the majority of homes in tact, if people choose to go back. May not be wise however.
They were most likely would return to the island unless govt deemed the place were unhabitable. The tremendously rich fertile soil from the volcanic material were always attract people to reside nearby to develop agriculture.
OK, this video has disabused me of a long-held notion I had, and that is that effusive and explosive style eruptions just don't happen at the same time. I've often been critical of 'Dante's Peak', which showed the volcano producing vast quantities of volcanic ash Hawaiian style pahoehoe lava flows before producing a caldera-forming explosion that sent pyroclastic flows sweeping over the nearby town. Doean't happen like that, I've said, Hawaiian style lava is too fluid for it to cause a major explosive eruption.
Well, looks like I was wrong, if this volcano produced a Plinian eruption with a tall ash plume, pyroclastic flows AND a lava fountain. So, I have to ask the question: how does a volcano known for explosive eruptions and associated forms of activity, get magma thin enough to produce a lava fountain?
Sad for locals. Gratz on funds request. What's needed is someone to do matching donations for dollars raised.
That person recording the volcano is on another level.
Yikes! Last I saw it was low key.🧐
may this is the volcano eruption my friend dreamt about a few months ago
damn, that must have seemed like the end of the world to those nearby

I am impressed that the volcano not have collapsed into itself
Respect the volcano, because it doesn't care!
I thought everyone had been evacuated from Ruang Island.
I hope the person capturing this amazing event is OK.
All of the video is from the island to the northeast of Ruang called Thulandang about a km away. Everyone was evacuated before the big eruption.
How many feet is 3 centimeters or would that be inches? Either way, that sounds like a lot of pebbles, rocks and/or dirt. The explosions were heard how many miles? 😢
2.5 cm is approximately 1 inch. So just over an inch
That is unfortunate.
Tks God there is no casualties as evacuation took place before eruption.
Wow! Nature can be scary
50 sent. Here's hoping the International Red Cross or Rescue International sets up an easier-to-get-to fund for relief, though.
