According to my mother, I actually met William Boyd. It was at the Macy's Thanksgiving parade. I was 6 months old and he came over to me. Of course, I don't remember, but I've always had a fascination and admiration for him.
Rob, many thanks, and fyi: I have watched every Hoppy film from 1935 until Pop Sherman stopped producing them in 1944, and I am now watching the films Boyd himself produced from 1946-48. What is fascinating to me is the effect the WWII years had on the series. For example, the Cassidy character is a little grittier and harder, as he callously disposes of Kirk Alyn's hapless villain in the 1944 "Forty Thieves" film. In any event, Boyd was such an underrated actor. Looking forward to revisiting the very first Hoppy film with AWOW!
I really love them. Especially the early ones with Hayes once he becomes Windy. Nice observation about the post WWII Hoppy’s. They even marketed some of them more like noir mysteries. What an amazing career Boyd had!
@@AWordonWesterns Agreed, Rob. Boyd was a fine actor and a very shrewd producer. Looking forward to revisiting his series' start in tonight's screening. Talk again soon!
In the mid-50's when I was nine or ten, my mother gave me a Hoppy themed birthday party and sent an invitation to Bill Boyd. I got a birthday card and note back that year and did for many years after. My mother continued a correspondence with Bill's wife and, later, with her mother. They were pen pals before it was popular. Hoppy was always my favorite of the cowboys, and Bill and his family have a place in my heart.
I had never seen or known about Hopp A-long Cassidy until about two years ago. I have now seen, about all his movies.I love seeing William Boyd. He portrays a smart nonsense, lovable Character. Quite attractive and a hit with the ladies!❤🎥🍿
@@AWordonWesterns Thank you. I've been a Subscriber to your channel now for a couple of years. It's great! Do you have a movies: " Texas Rangers" with Dave "Tex" O'Brien, & James Newill?❤️👍🎥🍿
What a great movie played by great Stars real Stars love Gabby's face expression when Hoppy gift him the box of tobacco pipe he almost had tears in his eyes a Big thank you Mr Ward for sharing this movie with us ❤❤👍👍
My Momma really loved Hoppy!! Hoppy was the first classic western star that she went to the old movie theaters to watch when she was a teenager!! Of course she passed her love of old classic westerns to me and I love them all, especially Hoppy! Thanks for all of your uploads!!!
Great movie i have the entire collection on dvd but still watch your channel these are great. In this movie i noticed hoppy wearing a different gun belt than the one that became his trademark i just watched it again, thank you very much for bringing these to us brings back a lot of great memories
An hour late, I missed watching with you all, but enjoyed the show just the same. Thanks for the heads up - a different theme each month and an hour earlier for those on the Westcoast. Always good to be here. Thank you Rob, and R.J.
A 2nd cousin of Hoppy's was a teacher in my High School in Newark Oh. Unfortunately after 70 years I cant remember the subject Ms Boyd taught. She was a good teacher tho and liked by all of us.
Hey! Good evening! Excellent film! I just finished watching it, last week, for the third time. It keeps getting better, for me, as I keep learning and seeing new things. For instance, that first horse wipe-out, in the first 10 minutes, where the guy goes flying (and he was prepared, but the poor horse was not) over the handlebars (sort of speaking). I am guessing that Hollywood wouldn't get away with that kind of animal "stunt" these modern days. Am I correct, Friends? I don't know. And does anyone know who performed that stunt, please? Finally, last week, I was impressed by that steep, rocky hill that Hoppy and Topper come down, also near the beginning. Very impressive. Hope you have a great night together, enjoying this classic. I learned, today, that Fred Rogers ("Mr. Roger's Neughborhood Of Make-Believe") started out as Gabby Haye's stage manager at NBC. I caught a TH-cam interview of Fred talking about how much he appreciated learning from Gabby as a young television production person. Did any of you know Gabby?
Many thanks to "A Word on Westerns" for posting this classic western. I just finished reading the book "Hopalong Cassidy: On the page, on the screen" by Francis M. Nevins. I thought it was a great overview of all of the Hoppy movies. The only criticism I might hazard to make is that some of the comments about William Boyd were subjective and negative in tone. Having said that, it's still a good book. Cheers from Canada.
I have seen this film before, but it is always nice to see William Boyd as Bill "Hop-a-long" Cassidy. I think that I saw it on WOW earlier, but this seems clearer. Hope that you show more! 😊👍
Rob. I would call you by your last name but I can't remember it. I've got alzehiemers. The best movie gary Cooper ever made. He produced it himself. "Along came Jones". It is superb! Loretta Young Jim demerest & Dan durey. Watch it and then figure ways to share it with your audience. Please. Sir. You'll also se3 what a great actor coop was.
Like westerns, wish they,d have them back but .I guess no good men anymore stars that can play a cowboy. They should bring them back to tv take off the crappy ones
You can never go wrong with a Hoppy classic…

To me, it matters little that you can't recall that Boyd meeting, just that you actually met him! LOL.
Love Hoppy, he was a father figure for us kids. What a wonderful role model for a generation!!
Top notch role model

Yep, some very good acting from Hayes. No wonder Republic Pictures wanted to steal him away for Roy, their new singing cowboy. Thanks.

Me encantan estas películas en blanco y negro 🖤 uno aprecia mejor el papel de cada actor y son muy buenos 😮😊esa risa de Cassidy es bien contagiosa 😂
Best long range handgun shot in western history!! My fav Hoppy movie and it's an AA+ in my book.

Thanks, Stephen. Nevins book is a must read for Hoppy/Boyd fans.
Just a year later, in 1936, James Ellison starred as Buffalo Bill Cody with Gary Cooper and Jean Arthur in The Plainsman.
Bought back memory 😢
A western is not a western without George ( Gabby) Hayes.
Welcome back Friday Rob and crew! 👍👍 🤠
