Regarding the practical usage of mnemonic techniques, I use them to learn programming and machine learning.
Visualization and other things don't really help in that case, 'cause programming is not about keeping all the functions in memory, it's more about understanding approaches used in different cases. That's why the traditional way to learn things by reading books before the practical part doesn't really help. As Mattias said, the global picture should appear before diving into details. So it's much more efficient to start developing something (e.g. a website) and learn things for the concrete task.

Thank you for this wonderful episode!
Before I bumped into this video, I had not given a single thought to using any memory techniques in my daily life. However, currently I have to dive into two professional fields in which I've never worked before, completely on my own, and I am definitely using the point of "getting summaries first", as well as the visualisation technique. Also, I'm learning a new language, and frequency dictionaries completely fell out of the scope of tools I use, so I'm going to include this one. Finally, "position reading" makes all the possible sense, and I intend to use it for both educational and recreational reading.
The whole episode is thought-provoking in many regards, so once again, thanks a lot for your work

I have seen this interview a couple of times now and I would like to make two points:
    1) Mattias Ribbing: Thank you very much for your contribution to society and sharing your knowledge and experience. Furthermore, it is highly commendable that you managed to hold the interview together and remain professional throughout despite the immature and amateur performance of your questioner.
    2) Mustreader: Thank you for showing us all a masterclass of what you should NEVER do when listening to someone or when interviewing a highly talented guest.

Knowing words isn’t the hardest part of learning a language, listening comprehension is.
You can listen to someone speaking and not understand what they are saying, but if you were to read a text of the very thing they said you could understand everything.
It’s very complex for the brain. It takes years to develop and become good at it. All the accents, speeds, cluster of words.
    It takes forever.
Matt vs Japan has a good video about it that explains it well

13/09/21 - Excellent interview, but probably better without the vodka. Mattias is and was terrific, revealing his self-taught passion for mnemonics.
BTW I'm 73, and have spent half my life studying and reading the Mnemosyne immortals; Furst, Lorayne, O'Brien, Buzan, Berglas, Carvallho, Cooke,Pridmore, Shereshehesky, Dellis, White, Mullen, Hancock, and of course, Lynne Kelly, as well as last but not least, Dr Anthony Metivier.
There is and are more, and I apologise to any I have omitted from this list but the list grows day by day. One day these methods will be taught in kindergarten, schools, colleges, and universities universally in a better served world.
I, personally would recommend that you forcefully follow-up this particular topic for everything that it's worth ... and that is a whole lot! Sorry that it's taken me so long to catch-up on You Tube, however, better late than never!
May your God go with you :)

That's too much,

Let's talk about memorization and learning here:
    forum.artofmemory.com/
I disagree with the way Mattias Ribbing expresses himself about memory. All understanding is memory, all memories are a form of understanding, but not all memories are relevant to what's to be known. See, in math you may not need to memorize numbers, but algorithms or steps to make calculations you must memorize, you must memorize strategies, concepts and applications of the concepts. All of that can and is to be memorized. Memorization is the process of storing information in the mind. Understanding is organized memories which can be useful for a task. I understand how to ride a bike, these are memories. I can recite the poem, memories also I can talk about what the author meant, that can also be memorized.
I agree in the effectiveness of the images and visualizations he share. However, they aren't a must. You can whatever strategy works for you. However the best is if you do look for efficiency and speed. Some mnemonics:
Method of loci (this is limitless, on the forum you can find me: InMyMemoryWorld, explaining more than just the typical book lore)
    Peg method memorization,
    Link system,
Linkword (the one for vocabulary in the video)
    ...
Check the forum. We mostly speak in English, but there are people from across the globe.
