  • On this Aotearoa New Zealand history tour we are exploring The Point Reserve at Ngāruawāhia. At the meeting points of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers, The Point Reserve overlooks a place of special historical and contemporary significance.
It is the capital of the Kingitanga, and the headquarters of the Maori King.
It is the birthplace of the movement, with Potatau Te Wherowhero being crowned in Ngaruawahia in 1858.
It’s location being of strategic importance, politically and economically.
However, following the battle at Rangiriri and the evacuation of the Maori settlement here - it wouldn’t be until 1889 that the King and his people would return to Ngaruawahia.
The Point Reserve also contains a gun turretfrom the river gunboat ‘Pioneer’ that was used to transport British troops and supplies down the Waikato river.
🔴 In this video series looking at the New Zealand Land Wars, we aim to present the places as they are . We understand that it is not possible to tell the many complex stories of a location with one video, rather we want to make these places available to be visited virtually.
