    Constructive feedback #1:
In rifle profile setup We need to be able to input correction factors for scope turret variance from exact moa or milrad amounts. We do tall target testing to measure the actual amount that the elevation turret moves POI per click… most scopes do not track perfectly. For example I have one scope that tracks 0.095 milrad/click and another scope that tracks 0.247 moa/click. Without this simple correction factor input into the app, I have to take your come up value in the hud… then remember or lookup my tall target test result for that scope and calculate the factored come up then dial my turret and hope I didn’t make a mistake… 😬this is unbelievably annoying!
I mean we are trying to be precise right?… The scope turret tracking error can be several percent.
Then you can provide the solution result in either raw come up or corrected scope adjustment format or both. For an example of this feature handled well, check out Strelok Pro.
    Cheers!

Well thanks! All your pod casts, especially the 4DOF stuff, has made my son a ballistics nerd. Now I struggle sometimes to keep up with his topics on improving our shooting. He has built a couple of long range guns and is an awesome marksman, but initially he was frustrated over the understanding of ballistics. Now, thanks to your generous abs digestible content, he has become a "walking ballistics encyckopedia". It's great to see the "smart ones" sharing their knowledge to the younger crowds. Hornady's willingness to share all this info, at little to no cost, is a great thing for them & us.
We still smile with each shot, but now we are getting smarter with each shot, too.

Great watch and covers everything 👌
The talk about the 'noise' within your groupings was interesting and I'd never really considered that before.
What would be awesome is if you could come up with your own version of the Ballistic X app within 4DOF.
You could then take a photo of your zero, input all the impacts, calculate group size, vertical and horizontal dispersion and automatically have that data entered automatically instead of having to measure and manually input..........

Excellent podcast. I have recently started using the Hornady app, again. There are some differences between it and Strelok Pro, which I have also used.
One thing, I cannot find Federal brand ammo in the libraries. I have one rifle that does really well with Federal Fusion .30 W 165 gr. And I have a lot of that ammo. So, I enter manually the data from the box, which is general and to 500 yards, probably close enough. 500 yards is about the limit if energy at 1,000 ft-lbs for that.
Now, I have a new rifle in 7 mm PRC and slightly less than 100 rounds of the Precision Hunter 175 gr ELD-X. And working on tuning my rifle to really like that load.
Watching this was even more helpful than the basic how-to. Different ways that you can hack it. And, I have ordered a Kestrel unit to have it synched for local atmospherics. For example, where I live is the highest elevation in my county and my state, over 620 feet ASL. That has to have some effect. And I cannot always depend on an average temperature. It can be 15 degrees in the morning and 50 by afternoon.
I even purchased the range card, which is nearly nothing. $12 for Strelok Pro, so .99 for range cards is nothing. And I was looking for a way to print a range card because there is no export button. But screen cap was brilliant. I can do that and send it to a printer if I want a hard copy (sometimes doing things kind of old school.) Also, I can go to the Hornady site on my desktop or laptop and generate a calc chart and print that. However, in that calculator, I could not find 7 mm PRC. I did choose 7 mm, .284 at 175 gr and 3,000 fps and it fairly matches what I calculated in the app.
The weird thing is that on some of my test distances, it can be a 1 MOA difference between Strelok Pro and Hornady. For example, I can bore sight with a laser at 10 yards in my house. Then go to a range and test at a short range and calculate and arrive at approximate 100 yard zero and refine that. I was trying to figure out why one app is about 1 MOA from a different app. However, I am going to work with the Hornady figures.
My main application is hunting, from 50 yards and out. Eventually, I plan to go for mule deer at a few hundred yards to elk at some farther distances. Right now, the farthest shot I have ranged at the public land I use near me is 225 yards.
Keep up the good work, guys. I have become a binge watcher of these. What I don't know could and does fill volumes.

Thanks for breaking the whole app down field by field, can'twait to play with the zero angle approach. Some quick questions on zero angle to make sure i followed along correctly. If you add your impact data (ideally on a zero wind day) and go back to the hud, the scope adjustments shown should put you dead on at whatever you select as your zero distance right? Then you adjust your scope to those figures and change your impact data to 0-0 and go off to the races? Most people want their turrets set perfectly to their zero, so to do that this way how many shots are you two shooting before entering your zero angle impact data? Then, how many more after adjusting your scope and zeroing the impact data to confirm (or is it not really needed at that point)? Thanks again for your podcasts content I'm thoroughly enjoying it and learning a lot!

Hey guys, let's say I'm trying to get zero'd, find my zero angle, offsets, etc. And let's say I'm at a 100 yd range with a remote Kestrel with the wind vane and can set it up anywhere between me and the target (so 0 to 100 yd). Given that wind speed and direction are so critical where would you place your wind meter? Halfway (50 yd) or closer? I think I heard (maybe on one of your prior podcasts) that the wind affects aerodynamic jump more as the bullet exits the barrel so maybe closer would be better? Thanks for your response and love the content and products you're putting out.

I did a good 15 round group and figured out my zero angle once. Worked like a charm. I had to take the barreled action out of the stock and clean the gun good after a wet hunt and when I put it back together all my impacts are now .4 miles low. I thought as long as the scope and barreled action stay together the zero angle stays the same? Do I have to re-do the whole process now that i re set the barreled and scoped action in the stock and the “zero” is now .4 mils low?

1: be able to shoot a wind azimuth just like you do with the target azimuth
2: a target card in the app that helps with PRS. What I’m thinking is making a target card with all your distances and then being able to shoot an azimuth for each target with its wind azimuth.

At the same time, there's no easy way to give that input. I would love a way to directly report errors and come with suggestions/wishes directly in the app.
The users are tied to an email and that would make it easy for you to reconnect via email.
I sent one error report in the other day, and had to go through the general contact form on the Hornady page, and error report for the app (or any app related questions) were not options for contact.
As a user who would love to participate and give active feedback, it would make things so much easier if I could send a ticket through the app.

Suggestion, on all measurements/distance inputs, allow the user to change the unit used (in place). ie zero range... allow user to enter distance and in place specify unit used, applicable to "Set Rifle Info" and then values on "Zero Range/Find Zero Range"
Maybe on the HUD, where sowing values environment: Altitude... show which unit it is in, easy to not realise it might be feet and not meters or vice versa. ie a altitude of 100feet and 100meter's is actually close, but a very significant difference.
You do reflect this for wind in the slider just about the bullet... and you show this for distance as you show yards.
sorry, as i'm watching... coming up with "suggestions", where you show values being pulled in from kestrel, show the units being pulled in/reflected.

I used 4DOF almost exclusively until 2020. Then it just stopped working - I could not make it work on any iPhone or iPad. The app went to the start screen, then crashed.
I saw your podcast and thought - "maybe they fixed the bug?". Well, it's still there. New iPhone, same old problem - crashes after it starts.

Just an FYI, the 4DOF ballistic calculator on your website is broken. It doesn’t correct pressure for altitude and doesn’t take earth based affects into account even though it says it is. I plugged in all the data to match my 4DOF app and downloaded the range card data from your web calculator. When comparing the data from web calc to actual app, your website is way off. Downloading excel files of range card dope from your web calc was all wrong. I’ll stick to the app.

Ok, I have a complaint. I purchased the load data for 308 Win and 6.5 Creedmoor, but there's a huge problem if internet is not available and the app closes if it can't connect to your Hornady server (so it seems). This means I can't get the data unless I am within cell/wifi coverage. This is typically not a problem as I typically reload at home and have ammo when I go our hunting, just an annoyance.
I notice for instance on 308 Win that Hornady groups the bullets by size, so in the case of Hornady CX, which I need to use copper for hunting, it gives me a range of 176-180 grains. I'm reloading 180 grain CX. If you have bullets between 176-180 grains they will not perform the same. I have some 178 grain ELD-X which I plan to use for target practice as we can't use lead for game here in California. The 178 grain ELD-X will shoot different than the 180 grain CX. I will load and watch for pressure signs on the primer/pocket, but it seems it would be more helpful to have those bullets with different load data, just a thought.
With that said, if I purchase the entire 11th edition will I have all the reloading data for all cartridges so it doesn't need to access over the Internet? That would be more useful, but ultimately I guess I need to order the hard copy book, it seems the electronic versions of riddled with differences as I describe. At least with hard copy there is no question, if the data is in the book it's there, and if it's not one needs to work up the load themselves. Unfortunate for me, I don't have a chronograph, but I don't know actual velocity.

    Constructive Feedback #2:
You refer to specific things in vaguely different ways in different parts of the app and with strangely imprecise language:
You call saved rifle profiles “favourites” then in the description of favourites you refer to it as a “build out” Then in the HUD you have an “edit rifle info” button that takes you to the “set rifle info” page to input info related to both the rifle and the ammo which apparently is one of your “favourite build outs”. 🤪
So… let me get this straight… all of my saved rifle profiles are favourites?… I think not…
I have rifle profiles that are real ones that I use in the field, some that are hypothetical, some that are temporary etc. They most certainly are not all favourites.
I know I’m being nit-picky about semantics… but a good GUI relies on referring to specific things with consistent, precise, intuitive and meaningful nomenclature and symbology.
    Recommendation:
    1) Change “Favorites” to “Saved Rifle Profiles”
    2) In the saved rifle profiles list make allowance for creating multiple lists that the user can name themselves… then the user can sort different profiles how they see fit. Which might include actual favourites if they are so inclined.

I’d like the app to stop crashing.
This is a new development. It was working great for years. Now it won’t load the chart/grid for my rifles that use zero angle. Not 100% sure that is the driver but it is the only common feature I’ve found.
