As someone who plays both Magic DPS and Healer a lot, the statement "healer robes but black" is very accurate. It is shocking how frequent the Healer and Magic DPS gear is the same clothes but the Magic DPS set is black and the Healer set is white. Also Red Mage main who dipped a little bit into Summoner and Black Mage, everything @HyouSubaru said is right. Red Mage is fly as fuck.
@@Deode-d4h Apparently Picto was so overpowered, that in the last patch, nearly all other DPS jobs got their damage increased, to catch up with Picto, so... it at least did for a while. How it's now, I don't know.
The hardest thing about Black Mage is the hidden ‘AoE Magnet’ trait that will draw 95% of AoE targeted spells onto you or your immediate vicinity. Especially once you cast Ley Lines.
I've been leveling blm to finish up my casters and this is wholly the case. I've had bosses completely stop what they are doing and walk across the arena just to cast a cone at me in the far corner where no one else is, aiming it off the map at that.
Red mage is what drew me back to FF14 back when stormblood exp released. Req lvl50 to learn but has been my main since. If you want to stick with a caster till 50 Id recommend Summoner to start.
I main Summoner, I love it. It's a lot of fun, and is the first DPS class to get a Rez (Red Mage gets theirs at 64, SMN gets theirs at I think 12?). One thing to note is that Red mage didn't come as a base starting class, so you'd have to level any other job up to I think 50? before it becomes available.
you asked what to level, if you aren't familiar with magic dps mechanics, the summoner is probably the easiest one to learn on. Then switch to red mage later. I play them all, but red mage is my favorite.
Black Mage is very rough starting, up until 60. Every 10 levels after is another layer of learning to grasp with charges and Paradox. Blm is best once you've experienced a fight since you have to plan your rotation for minimum downtime and abusing the latency cast conpletion. It is very satisfying to play and benefits greatly from Swiftcast and Triple Cast along with high Spell Speed, however, Pictomancer currently can match or even exceed Blm in damage with its various instant casts, being able to prep a burst of damage during a bosses invuln phase, providing a shield and heal, and a raid damage buff without having to commit to a plan of action. Right now, Blm is in a rough spot where the main thing they should excel in, they're only just scraping by.
Glory to the Red! Probably the most fun caster to play since you are mobile and versatile while still having a sense of difficulty. Not to mention we are often the ones with the VerSpatula to get everyone back up when we nearly wipe.
I play picto now, but if you are just learning the role i think SMN is the best option to try and optimize and then learn how a fight works. once you figured it out or start to recognize things you can then go into something like RDM which still has casts but imho still a little bit easier than BLM. Picto is just fun, but has really long cast times on the big dps skills

To clear something up about Blue Mage, Jocat said Thousand Needles sucks, and it does at higher levels Thousand needles is a leveling tool that deals one thousand damage in total, if there's only one target it takes all of it, if there's two they take five hundred each if there's four they two hundred and fifty. You get the idea. Point is it gives an under leveled blue mage the ability to one shot higher level enemies or two shot them by first putting them to sleep, casting it then swift casting it a second time. I should mention it has a five second cast time.
Play Arcanist. It has a simple mage-y rotation and you get a little carbuncle following you around. Once you hit level 50, you get two new jobs instead of just first job 2.0: Summoner (dps) and Scholar (healer).

As much as I love Black Mage, as someone with 4k+ hours on it, I recommend you try out multiple casters, as they all have something Unique to offer. Find which one feels best to you and you enjoy playing, and stick with that to learn the basics. Then diversify into multiple casters if you so wish! Having fun is the most important part after all. Oh, and yes. Leveling BLM feels *awful* until level 60.
Black Mage is decent fun, but I think the real value comes in the fact that it forces you to think different about fights -- "how long can I stand in one place, and what's the shortest possible distance I can move to not die?" Every fight is designed to be cleared with every class, so every fight can be solved for a Black Mage. Knowing that no situation is impossible weirdly simplifies a lot of mechanics.
Red Mage is a blast, and also if you're good at avoiding aoes and mechanics, is the DPS with the highest carry potential, perhaps even the highest of any job. Level 64+, anyway, but even before then you can kinda shoe horn yourself as a healer when the actual healer dies.
If you're new, then sadly you can't play Blue Mage right away. You have to beat the final boss of the level 50 portion of the game before Blue Mage unlocks. However, if you have a reasonable audience then Blue Mage could be a fun diversion for you once you get there. The biggest problem with Blue Mage is actually just having to find your own party for content, but streamers tend to have more people wanting to party up than they can handle. If you happen to know someone in the game who can give you the "Blue Mage Tour," where they take you to a lot of the monsters that have moves you can learn, that can be a great start.

White and Black paint let you instant cast spells meaning that once you have a few built up, you can just move around for about 15 secs. The palette swap gives you stronger but longer to cast spells and you also get a neat dash that grants you a temporary sprint. It also hits ridiculously hard in older content and even current one. Muses let you summon parts of monsters to attack and eventually use a special muse spell, summon a giant hammer that you can comically strike down or a field that grants you increased spell speed and damage. However, muses are long to cast inside battle (they're instant outside of it.)
This is soo out dated. Pictomancer nuke all range magic dps jobs
Avoid black or blue starting the game.
SMN is easiest to level because you just level as SCH and have insta-queues.
