Yo Cody, I definitely forget how to swallow sometimes. Or I will overthink swallowing and it feels like I can't do it. I'm diagnosed with OCD and what you're describing can be a somatic obsession. I hope you do consider seeing a therapist, because anxiety attacks are no fun
I've never seen someone else with this issue who has OCD too! 😭 its so weird to my family when im eating food and i just stop and keep the food in my cheeks because i cannot swallow at all
I don't have OCD but I do have GAD and the swallowing thing happens to me too sometimes. It's one of those physical anxiety symptoms that makes you think something is really wrong with you and starts an anxious feedback loop.

That not being able to swallow/feeling like you have a lump in your throat thing is definitely a stress symptom. Used to happen to me when I was younger, when I had pretty bad anxiety for a couple of years. Same with the breathing, like you’re constantly aware of how you’re breathing, or feel like you need a deep breath all the time. There’s a sciency reason behind it, something to do with a chemical your body produces when you’re stressed out, or something like that. Hope it passes soon, man!

Difficulty swallowing can come from eating something you’re allergic to. When I was little I had a dairy allergy we didn’t know about and I had issues swallowing when I’d drink milk so I got tested and found out

I have gotten panic attacks and feeling like you can’t swallow is called a ‘globus sensation.’ It’s harmless and usually can be resolved by drinking more water and less caffeine :) Sorry you’re going through a tough anxiety period, Cody - hope you get better soon, and thanks for mentioning it on the pod. Yeah Cody I’ve had that exact feeling, like I can’t swallow. Used to scare the shit out of me as a kid when I had panic attacks. It’s kind of like how the “not being able to breathe” feeling works. You obsess over the feeling of swallowing and for some reason it makes you feel like you can’t swallow. Just trying to distract yourself from it works. Hope this helps
Cody, I get the forgetting how to swallow thing, though it's to do with my appetite. When I get too stressed/burned out, it's like I'm trying to eat food but I can't swallow it, almost like I've forgotten how. With you talking about panic attacks recently, it reminded me of my experience with it. You should talk to someone about stress management if that's an issue for you. If not and I'm barking up the wrong tree, I hope you figure it out and get somewhere with it soon x
Wow that’s so interesting! I’ve seen a lot of comments saying this but I haven’t experienced it before. Every time I’ve had anxiety attacks it’s either existential anxiety where the more I think about how weird I feel the worse I feel and it doesn’t go away u til I go to sleep and wake up, or anxiety attacks where I can’t breath properly for like hours on end and I can’t eat. Those make me angry especially if I don’t know what’s causing it and it starts to really hurt my chest/I get dizzy

I have gotten panic attacks and feeling like you can’t swallow is called a ‘globus sensation.’ It’s harmless and usually can be resolved by drinking more water and less caffeine :) Sorry you’re going through a tough anxiety period, Cody - hope you get better soon, and thanks for mentioning it on the pod. Makes me feel more normal about mine
The swallowing thing definitely happens to me when I get anxious too, I get nauseous too so they kind of happen at the same time

CODY! I have the exact same swallowing thing! Usually when I’m panicked or hungover. It feels like I’m about to choke and it makes eating difficult.
I HAD A SWOLLOWING THING FOR 2 YEARS. It goes away! My brother also have a weird problem and he would break down when we went for dinner because he couldn’t swallow. His was different then mine.
About the not being able to swallow thing, it happens to me when I have panic attacks, and it is some of the scariest shit ever. You start thinking crazy shit like "if I can't swallow my spit am I inhaling it and going to get pneumonia and die?" I AM HERE WITH YOU CODY. ITS REAL AND IT SUCKS

Yeah Cody I’ve had that exact feeling, like I can’t swallow. Used to scare the shit out of me as a kid when I had panic attacks. It’s kind of like how the “not being able to breathe” feeling works. You obsess over the feeling of swallowing and for some reason it makes you feel like you can’t swallow. Just trying to distract yourself from it works. Hope this helps

Cody, I get the forgetting how to swallow thing, though it's to do with my appetite. When I get too stressed/burned out, it's like I'm trying to eat food but I can't swallow it, almost like I've forgotten how. With you talking about panic attacks recently, it reminded me of my experience with it. You should talk to someone about stress management if that's an issue for you. If not and I'm barking up the wrong tree, I hope you figure it out and get somewhere with it soon x

Wow that’s so interesting! I’ve seen a lot of comments saying this but I haven’t experienced it before. Every time I’ve had anxiety attacks it’s either existential anxiety where the more I think about how weird I feel the worse I feel and it doesn’t go away u til I go to sleep and wake up, or anxiety attacks where I can’t breath properly for like hours on end and I can’t eat. Those make me angry especially if I don’t know what’s causing it and it starts to really hurt my chest/I get dizzy
