You just said my thoughts out loud. I’ve been trying to find my style, subscribed on so many fashion channels for advice. Now I adopted that casual minimalist style over months, got rid of many pieces that didn’t fit this style etc. ended up looking at myself in the mirror realising that I have nothing to say about my everyday outfits except they are comfy and clean, and clothes fits well, and colors go well together. But there is no excitement, no character left. I miss my colourful sweaters even if they are not in my season palette.
I’m exactly at this stage right now although I don’t think I love too many colours. I live in Australia though and it gets so hot sometimes that my choices are pretty limited half of the year. At least I know what I don’t like 😂
I feel the exact opposite, I inject playfulness in every outfit, but sometimes people assume I’m full of myself because I’m always “trying so hard” :-) I actually just love dressing up
I feel the same way. When I wear the things that bring me joy, I feel like I’ve shown up for myself. Even if it means I stick out like a maximalist sore thumb in a sea of capsule neutrals lol.
@saranoad I love this attitude, and I know what you mean with people thinking you try to hard. I've seen looks from other people too when I dress in something "over the top", but I'm happy to hear that maybe it's more fun to be overdressed than boring :D.
I also love how you articulated the teen I-don’t-want-anyone-to-think-I-tried-today mentality. I think it’s always been around in some form, but it really does say a lot about a person’s lack of interest in life when they choose to dress intention-less-ly (I know that’s the case for me anyway). Dressing with intention is a practice in self-respect and respect for others, knowing that the way you present yourself can bring joy to you and the people around you!
“Bad style is better than no style” hit me like a ton of bricks! I used to dress SO quirky when I was a little kid and then I got really self-conscious and started dressing more “normally”. But then I got frustrated that my outfits didn’t feel like they were really expressing my personality anymore… duh 😅. I’ve started to slowly re-embrace being a little weird again and letting my outfits tell people a little more about who I am. There’s definitely a link between how we feel about ourselves and the way we do or do not use fashion as a form of self-expression. The more confident I become in who I am as a person, the more comfortable I am in dressing the way I want to!
I can relate! I've always had a quirky style, but now that I'm middle aged I have started feeling like I have to look more serious for some reason (...one of the reason that my jobs are "more upscale" than they were when I was younger). But...when I see myself looking too "ladylike" or "corporate", I just can't deal with it! So...I'm sticking to my quirky self, but maybe trying to do it more subtly somehow. I add maybe one quirky thing to an otherwise "normal"-ish outfit. It really makes a difference :)
i resonate so much with you! when i got my first good paying job i would spend so much money in fashion, specially trendy things that i would hate after a few weeks. trying to escape from that, now i'm so mindful about what i shop, but i do feel sometimes i'm being way too mindful, because i have very few clothes and i don't feel represented with the outfits i create. it's like you said, everything i own is basic and neutral and doesn't say anything about my personality. this coming season i'm going to try to open myself to new possibilities and allow myself to try new things even if they don't end up working for me, in te quest to find my true personal style :)
I love using the consignment store-concept to experiment with those things. I allow myself to buy playful second hand clothes, and if I get bored with them I sell them again. Clothing swaps are also fantastic for this, many of my all time favorite clothes and shoes have come from swap markets. I feel that's a pretty sustainable way to experiment and allow yourself to have fun with your style. I only buy one or two brand new items each year, everything else I buy is second hand.
Just found your channel, I love it! So refreshing to have another type of content to engage to, especially not focusing in trends and trying not to catch up being on trend but just wearing what you feel comfortable and feel confident in.
really enjoyed this, esp your thoughts on how the trend cycle has essentially disappeared and / or become all consuming and doesn’t really mean anything anymore!! ❤
Wonderful video. I'm a new subscriber, I really like listening to your thoughts on fashion and style. You bring out some really good points in this video. I've often been struggling with my own style and how trendy I "should" be or not. One of the conclusions I've come to is basically that we (and by that I mean "I") are always trying to look like someone other than ourselves. Weather we follow trends or try to avoid them, I think a part of the problem might be that we become bored of our own style because it is...our own style. It's not new and fresh to our eyes like the styles and outfits we see other people wear. But we don't want to be carbon copies of others, so this is a constant dilemma. So therefore we are in this constant search, because we crave novelty. I know that in my case this is also based in fear of becoming "outdated" or looking old, since I'm getting close to 50, and older women are not seen as the most cool and trendy people in the world. On the other hand I don't want to look like an older woman trying to look like I'm 17, so I really try to not be too trendy, or I try to kinda follow some trends of my age group, but not too much (argh!)...
I love how thoughtful and articulate you are in expressing your feelings around fashion! Thanks for sharing your reflections - "it's cool to try hard" is something I really needed to hear today, and I can't wait to see where this new/refreshed mindset takes you.
Loved this video. I've felt really drawn to minimalist, neutral clothes recently but I've been having difficulty figuring out whether my tastes are just changing as I get midway through my twenties or whether it is linked to my recent self-consciousness around my outfits/choices of colour/etc. Maybe a bit of both haha. Lots of food for thought in this video so thanks!
Regarding finding your outfits too bland or boring, I've been experimenting with adding one playful thing to each outfit I wear (that is, when I feel like doing that, some days I just want to be bland and boring). My first priority though is that the outfit must be comfortable to wear and warm and practical for the climate I live in. I might be wearing really basic pants, but then I add a quirky sweater. Or maybe I'm wearing a full outfit that is nothing special, but then I'll add a funny scarf. Sometimes I also love being on the verge of looking "bad", that is, taking a small fashion risk in a way that some people will think I made a fashion mistake (and maybe I did? but that's ok, it's just fashion, right?), and some people will appreciate the humour in the outfit. Does this make sense? I guess it probably does, if it makes me happy, right?
@@hafdisbjarnadottir2943 yes I love this. you caught me on a day where I’m getting so much criticism on this platform for my style being “too this” or “too that.” and I love hearing this perspective and really needed it. I relate to this and it means a lot. It IS just fashion after all and it’s meant to be fun! 🫶🏽
@@__phoebe.taylor wonderful, I'm so happy this resonated with you in this way. I for one love your style and I also love many other styles very different to your style. I also feel the same way you do when I see people dressed in all kinds of way out in the street - I love the variety! Even the outfits where people might not have put any thought into them whatsoever - some of those outfits accidentally look great as well 😄!
People need to realize that trends are NORMAL and OKAY, and that experimenting with trends can be a fun way to try out new things or rediscover things you used to love! For example, the patent leather mary janes and big bows trend made me remember how much I adored those things as a little girl and I'm really glad I started wearing them again :) Also, I feel like the whole anti-trend thing is just a repackaged version of the 'not like other girls' shtick, essentially making fun of people (usually women, let's be real) for following trends. Obviously we should all be mindful about our clothing purchases and not buy into trend after trend after trend JUST because they are trends or because we want to 'fit in', and ofc throwing things away once they're no longer trendy is definitely problematic. But I just get an icky feeling about people who attack others (and their past selves) for wearing trends, like... have we really learned nothing?

Life's to short to worry about standing out. Don't dim your light to make others comfortable.
