Well, I feel silly! I'm going to use the terra cotta pots on the side of my house that were headed for donation and my leftover silicone to make ollas!! Thank you so much for covering that! I hope you still do a video on your automated watering system. I love how you cover this information. Thanks!!

Thank you for the information! I happen to have one olla I bought at Rehms last year…When I went back this year to buy a few more they were out…I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for more of them to place in my perennial garden bed…

Wow thank you, this information probably works at El Paso Texas and chaparral NM too

Yes, much of the same information will apply. Neither place is as high in elevation, but you're further south, so you'll be in a completely different hardiness zone. Bear that in mind when selecting plants and timing planting.

This comment isn't about olla's, but is meant to say I really appreciate this channel and the information related the our climate. Sure hope she talks on lawn care. Learning about the alkaline levels being higher in one of her other videos I have a feeling my lawn could do much better if I understood better how to deal with it.

You can get a soil test to better understand what kind of soil you have! Reach out to the Bernalillo Extension Office off Menaul for details.

Thank-you for reminding me of this technique! My sandy soil - even amended - dries quickly and I'd much rather bury a few pots and keep them filled than feel bad that I probably should have included biochar or something in this soil this year.

Soil is always a process. Your soil will only get better with time and care. Sadly, our supplier for true ollas at the nurseries has...(har har) dried up, so we're either all going to be making ours or searching elsewhere for a new maker.

@@highdesertgrowingABQ I ordered some online from the California Pot Company (they call them irrigation pots). More pricey than DIY, especially with shipping, but they should last longer than I probably will, LOL.

Just now heard of ollas! Wow they are great for supplementing water. Have not seen these at the big 5 garden centers nor Lowes or Home depot. I will try to make my own with your instructions. Do you bury the plastic ollas with approximately 1 to 1& 1/2 inches exposed above soil and the rest buried like the terra cotta pots? Thanks for your excellent tips. Moved here 2 years ago -STILL learning the ropes !

Yes, leave just enough above soil to make it easy to locate and fill.
I've been having a difficult time finding the latest ollas ANYWHERE in town this year. I've heard the supplier recently lost some staff and is lacking manpower to keep up with orders. They are handmade! I've seen the smaller ollas (perfect for pots) at Rehm's and Jericho. Good luck!

I'm out in the sandy scrub of Rio Rancho. Would ollas be useful for baby tree seedlings (mesquite, locust, desert willow), or harmful like you said they are for desert-adapted plants? I've killed one desert willow sapling by forgetting to water, so I was hoping maybe using ollas for the seedlings would help me keep them going.

How small are we talking? If they are smaller in diameter than a pencil, then possibly? I would hesitate to use ollas with desert trees, though, for the reasons I mention in my videos. If you want to help your baby trees survive RR sun and sand, I'd look at laying down a 4" layer of bark mulch around their bases (not touching the trunks). That will help maintain moisture. Also, when I plant something new that needs watering, I set reminders on my phone for when I know I'm going to be home. Make sure you're watering low and slow to help encourage strong tap roots on your trees. ☺️

I just watched a YT video from "Elliot Heumann" called "CHEAP and EASY DIY Garden Ollas" that has some good tips as well. I thought it was interesting to see someone up in Minnesota using ollas - wowsers.
