Nirmala Sitharaman's seventh consecutive budget cannot be faulted on intent. Two things stood out. First, focus on skilling and boosting employment. Second, sticking to a fiscal consolidation roadmap. There were changes related to income tax via increasing the standard deduction to ₹75000 and new tax slabs in the New Tax Regime. But the stock markets showed their disappointment over the increase in taxes on capital gains especially the long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax on equities, short-term capital gains (STCG) tax and tax on share buyback.
