I was in my teens back in the 80s when this CBS movie intro was used. I remember it vividly. At that time, my parents didn't have cable on their TV and on our street so we had the outdoor antenna to fiddle with to watch tv
These was themes that I grew up to, You never realize how much a part of your childhood they were till you see and hear. Im instantly transported back to my moms living room watching the Tuesday Night Movie
I remember when these intros came on me and my brother was told to go to bed but what usualy happened is mom or dad would take the television plug. They hijacked the tv plug after 9pm
Hello Mr. Teitzell. I'm 32 years old and I've loved this theme song and intro and remember this very well since I was 8 years old back in 1984! My overall favorite one was the cartoon commercial for Saturday morning's on NBC back in the mid 1980's featuring a roller coaster and Casey Kasem saying "we'll return after these message's"! The theme song that NBC used for that commercial was probably my all time favorite! This is some good classic stuff man and truly and sadly a real lost art!
Thank you for your efforts. Its these images and sounds that left a lasting impression and make up the parts of great memories of our childhood and growing up. When watching something on TV was such an epic event. These intros that ran on ABC, NBC, and CBS made the movie presentation larger then life.
I am incredulous that all of these comment-writers seem to know and remember this graphic so well? Why? Because it is so LONG ago and so lost among so much TV graphics ephemera . How can I say that? My company made this move open. My name is Jay Teitzell and we did virtually every on-air promo graphic between 1979 and 1985. This particular open was designed by the great John LePrevost, Directed by David Bleiman and Produced by David and I. I guess I should get in touch with Mr. EYEONTV.
An open like one of these was also used before the presentation of the 1985 TV movie "Malice in Wonderland" starring Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Alexander.
We still have 60 Minutes, The Young & The Restless, Sunday Morning, and The Price Is Right. Even shows like Hawaii 5-0, Magnum P.I. and The Equalizer were brought back!
@Teitzell Mr. Teitzell: When I hear this song, it takes me back: fresh out of a bath and ready for bed, mom was going to tuck me in and then watch the movie. That was when I was six years old. Now, I appreciate the graphics and not only does the music take me back, like I said, but it sounds so "big" and exciting. I'm sure this preceeded the Wizard of Oz a few times as I grew up and that may be why I remember it so well. Cheers to you and your crew, Mr. Teitzell.
@dolphinbuc - ABC 70's and 80's intro is just spectacular to me.- no kiddin dude, once the ABC Sunday Night Movie opening kicked off it was like "whoa! just drop everything cuz some real quality entertainments about to come on the tube"
Love it! I'm a native Washingtonian myself (and I still live in the area). I'm on the lookout for anything from 1984 from the DC market (mostly CBS Saturday mornings and afternoon kids blocks from the indie channels between September and October of 1984, but that's a long story in itself).
I think it looks good enough the way it is. They're always looking for a new hook. Keeping it retro gives it character. Sorta like a "good things back in the day" campaign.
This is the first CBS movie opening to use computer graphics. This one was generally used from 1983 to 1986; though during the 1985-86 season it continued as a secondary movie opener on the network, along with the 1978 colorful cutting room floor intro, and the 1985-89 3D Digital CGI intro with the exact same theme music with higher quality. By the fall of 1986 this opening and the colorful cutting room floor opening were discontinued, leaving the HQ 3D CGI the sole CBS movie intro until the fall of 1989.
I remember this opening and its cool slit-scan look. But I seem to recall that after this was in use for some reason they went back to the previous open with the camera, the arc lamp carbons, film splicer, etc. I don't know if that on TH-cam anywhere.
I remember seeing this intro for the first time in early 1984 on the Sunday Night movie presentation; it was a movie starring James Farentino as the dad of a young lady killed by a drunk driver, and he sued the drunk driver.
You know it's rare when a movie airs on network television anymore.. ABC might air something on a Saturday night, like I saw a week or so ago... but I don't remember an intro or bumpers... what do they do now? Just go right into the movie with no warning whatsoever? Just "here it is!"
While CBS's was good, ABC's early 80's sunday movie intro was first and still hasn't been beat for inspiring excitement as the lead-in to their incredible lineup of epic movies. Khan!!!
The 1978-84 CBS Movie Intro Scared Me as a kid with the brightness, generic disco music and the graphics coming to you 3D stile. This one is better and the CGI graphics were very good for it's time.
I love your company's work. Back when I was trying to get into video production, the style of your work influenced me a lot. I LOVED the promo reel you guys had on your website back in the early-mid 2000's. It had such an authoritative feel and sound to it. You should post that up on youtube if you get the chance. I'd love to know who did the music for it.
and I'd love to know how Mr Teitzell did these back then? I was just a kid back then but grew up in computers and television production and I could only imagine how long it took for these to render back then? weeks?
I still think the 1985 version - done by PDI - was the best, but this is still pretty good. I like the original bumper themes here better than the reedits used with the later opens.
@bmasters1981 Compared to the other intros this is a step down to me.That ABC 70's and 80's intro is just spectacular to me.The one before this one on CBS seemed better and upbeat.I'm upbeat so I see things differently the world does. Most people are pessimists on TH-cam.They can't wait to shoot someone down. You found it not to be lame God bless you,but for me it's step down from the others.Going to live my life*end transmission*
Dolphinbuc I agree with you. Though CBS and NBC have a place in my collection of fond memories of television in the 70s & 80s, I was and still am very partial to ABC. To me you just couldn't top the star tunnel intro or the one before that. Ernie Anderson and Joel Crager's voice over the trailers could get you running to the TV. Abc just had the whole package, a combination of things that put them way over the other 2 networks.
Hello Mr. Teitzell: Just replying to your comment to ask-- are you on Facebook? The reason I ask is because I have a group there whose purpose is the appreciation of openings such as this CBS one, as well as those from the other networks, cable outlets and local stations. It's called "TV's Box Office." I thought that I'd let you know about that in case you were interested.
I've seen plenty of crappy movies from the 70's and 80's. Not all of them were golden gems. Plenty of turds came out back then just like today. Lots of boring movies too. Sometimes you'll hear crappy music in the background of a grainy 70's film and the movie just becomes insufferable from that alone. Nostalgia isn't as good as people remember.
@Teitzell Hmmm... 1979-1985. That era encompassed this set of opens, plus its predecessor, the series with the film projector. Prior to that era, most of CBS's on-air promo graphics came from the late, legendary Lou Dorfsman. Dorfsman even created my all-time favorite, the 1972-84 "CBS Late Movie" title (particularly, the full 20-second version).
I miss those days so much. Life was so much better and easier than today. It makes me cry
It's amazing how such a short intro can bring back such a long legacy of nostalgia.
Thanks for this.
Was a teen in 70s and miss this era of TV 📺
I was in my teens back in the 80s when this CBS movie intro was used. I remember it vividly. At that time, my parents didn't have cable on their TV and on our street so we had the outdoor antenna to fiddle with to watch tv
Beautiful music intro and very impressive graphics. I sure miss these heart stopping intros.
For the mid 1980’s, this great CBS Movies theme song was way ahead of its time. Very sophisticated theme & graphics!
These was themes that I grew up to, You never realize how much a part of your childhood they were till you see and hear. Im instantly transported back to my moms living room watching the Tuesday Night Movie
I remember that theme song when I was a child brings back a lot of memories in those days i was nine years old at that time.
I will never forget these cause as soon as they came on what was it your parents always told you? GOOD NIGHT TIME FOR BED! UGH MOM COME ON!
I would say OK mom act like I'm going to sleep and as soon as she leaves on came the TV!
For me it was usually the closing credits of whatever sitcom we were watching that had started at 8:30pm.
I remember when these intros came on me and my brother was told to go to bed but what usualy happened is mom or dad would take the television plug. They hijacked the tv plug after 9pm
LoL
Unless they were showing the first Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, or one of the Muppet movies. Then you were allowed to stay up.
Hello Mr. Teitzell. I'm 32 years old and I've loved this theme song and intro and remember this very well since I was 8 years old back in 1984! I like the way the filmstrip becomes the CBS logo. That's really creative.
TV was fun to watch back then now you almost dread to turn it on
Ah, this brings back great memories, and the quality couldn't be better! Thank you, eyeontv!
The theme was later reused for the 1987-1989 intro.
Sara Rushing Actually it was reused starting in 1985 in a higher quality format.

This jingle and opening always made me think of the show, "Alice", which was nearing its run on the network.
An open like one of these was also used before the presentation of the 1985 TV movie "Malice in Wonderland" starring Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Alexander.
wish they would bring the old CBS back!
Pernell Harrison I agree, I agree, I agree (sorry if I said it 3 times)
We still have 60 Minutes, The Young & The Restless, Sunday Morning, and The Price Is Right. Even shows like Hawaii 5-0, Magnum P.I. and The Equalizer were brought back!
@@pannoni8449 not the same tho

Now, for almost a decade, CBS Saturday night has consisted of a repeat at 8-9, then 48 Hours from 9-11 OR a college football game.
These were awesome graphics and what a great team!!
@dolphinbuc - ABC 70's and 80's intro is just spectacular to me.-

1984 seems to have been so central to everything that happened in the 80s.
Lots of memories of seeing this on WWL and WAFB! 😄
Very impressive early CGI, especially with the filmstrip falling gradually into place to form the CBS eye! 👁️
WWL channel 4 in New Orleans, WAFB channel 9 (The tiger in the sky) in Baton Rouge!
I think it looks good enough the way it is. They're always looking for a new hook. Keeping it retro gives it character. Sorta like a "good things back in the day" campaign.
This brings back memories of being on my parent's bed getting my hair dried and knowing it was almost time for bed....
I LOVE YOU CBS 1990 MOVE
This is the first CBS movie opening to use computer graphics. Nostalgia 😍😍😍😍😍
I miss this music and opening. When they changed the opening, it just wasn't the same eventhough they kept the theme.
God, this is so old school. I love it. This came out one year before I was born.
Great theme from cbs
I worked for a C B S station for most of the decade of the 80's, I remember all of these.
Correction... Virtually every graphic on CBS, that is. But for two of those years we were also doing NBC.
great theme/memories!
CBS Movie Night graphics from 1980's on channel 7 KIRO-TV in Seattle Washington.
I LOVE IT!
I remember this opening and its cool slit-scan look. But I seem to recall that after this was in use for some reason they went back to the previous open with the camera, the arc lamp carbons, film splicer, etc. I don't know if that on TH-cam anywhere.
I miss the 1980s so much I can't stand todays
Animated by PDI
Most people are depressed now. 2020 is the worst year of my life
amen to that, 80s rocks
My childhood is calling me back on the phone line 2
CBS Movie Night graphics from the 1980's on WTKR-TV channel 3 in Norfolk Virginia.
That theme music brings back lots of memories.
Instant childhood memories

i miss the CBS movies, take off the stupid shows and bring back the movies
Nothing beats ABC with Ernie Anderson as the announcer
The CBS movie open were actually introduced for the 1983-84 season. replacing the previous one that was used since 1978-79.
Kwadwo Holloway Both intros continued to be used simultaneously until the fall of `86.
The sole 1986-89 intro, started primarily being used in the fall of 1985.
Bill Conti of "Rocky" fame.
looks so good. I wish their graphics were as good as they were then.
The 1978-84 CBS Movie Intro Scared Me as a kid with the brightness, generic disco music and the graphics coming to you 3D stile. This one is better and the CGI graphics were very good for it's time.

1:06 - 1:22 commercial break & return to movie.
And the music is nothing less than inspirational.
I still think the 1985 version - done by PDI - was the best, but this is still pretty good. I like the original bumper themes here better than the reedits used with the later opens.
Tomorrow, CBS will air it’s movie night show with Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
Why would you want to watch a movie with ads in it when you can watch the same movie without ads on home video or HBO/Cinemax/TCM?
@Teitzell well done jay good work
HeeHee! I remember this!!!
this music always reminds me of "bedtime" :(
I remember They showed Rocky IV in 89 I believe they used this? or the music?
Did they not have TV shows back then?
@bmasters1981 Compared to the other intros this is a step down to me.That ABC 70's and 80's intro is just spectacular to me.The one before this one on CBS seemed better and upbeat.I'm upbeat so I see things differently the world does. Most people are pessimists on TH-cam.They can't wait to shoot someone down. You found it not to be lame God bless you,but for me it's step down from the others.Going to live my life*end transmission*
Did CBS ever aired movies from 20th Century Fox like Star Wars, Predator, Revenge of The Nerds, The Omen movies and The 1986 Fly movie?
They did air Star Wars, aliens and all of the planet of the apes movies
Dolphinbuc I agree with you. Though CBS and NBC have a place in my collection of fond memories of television in the 70s & 80s, I was and still am very partial to ABC. except that if this was re-rendered and shown today, only people who watched CBS in the early 80s would know that it was from the 80s tho.
was your company dolphin prod.?
dolphin and edstan studios produced many cbs opens then.
btw - was this done optically (forox etc.) or digitally?

Yes
@dolphinbuc What do you find lame about it? I found nothing lame.
Looking back, these seem like a ripoff of the HBO intros with the pulsing text at the end.
What a dull bumper. ABC’s was so much better.
This is kinda lame!
