This is a phenomenal pen. I am new to pocket pens, and picked up a Kaweco Sport and the M2 at the same time. I have been using fountain pens since I was around 6 years old, and have pens ranging from Jinhaos to Meisterstücks. This pen’s nib is one of the best I’ve written with, up there with my high-end pens. I wish I could put this nib on many of my pens. The spring in the nib allows to to add flourishes that are impossible with the Kaweco, for example. And unlike the Kaweco, the M2 comes with both a converter and an incredible springed clip. The machining on this pen is beyond impressive for this price point. This is pen that could sell for US$150 or even more and I would think it was a bargain. One more point-unlike some metal pens, this pen doesn’t leave your hands smelling like metal. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this pen and everything right.
Steven, I have had mine for about a month and it is doing great. I love the metal. I have the brown one in Medium. And like you said it writes all the time. And the threads do not cut into my fingers like the Kaweco sport, I love the double broad on the Kawecos, I wish Hongdian made Broad and double Broad nibs on these. I would get rid of those Kawecos. Also they come with a nice converter too. i will be buying another one too.
This was excellent. Saw this pen on Amazon and wasn't sure it'd be up to much. Listening to and watching you has been great at reassuring me and I'm now excited! Also I'll check your other videos as I enjoyed your style of demonstrating this 😊
Using this pen in blue as an eyedropper with a bent Nib. By far the most utility for the price- writes great and cute design with the cats/spring clip. The aluminum body scuffs easily if dropped onto hard surfaces and the clip develops a petina but would definitely recommend this one
Thank you for the review, Stephen. I have a Kaweco Sport and it is not the pen i hoped it would be. This pen, though, may be the answer to what I am looking for. That there is a possibility to eyedropper the barrel is a bonus. I have done so with other metal oens and haven't had any issues.
Hey man, I like your reviews. This is the first fountain pen in a bit that I’ve been moved to consider purchasing for myself and as a gift. Besides this (which I will order) I have a Lamy 2000 and a Eversharp Skyline. When you say “bye” at the end of your video, you reminded me of that lady on Sean of the Dead (if you know, you know).
Thanks for the review! Is the M2 compatible with international cartridges? I'm curious as you mention that the convert appears to have extra width. Cheers!
Just received this in the mail (Medium nib) and I've got to say that this is one of the smoothest writers I've bought (including my Twsbi Eco in Bold). Thanks for the recommendation!
Interesting review. I was gifted by my friend HongDian Black Forest metal fountain pen in F nib and it also writes out of the box. I would probably not buy this myself, but it is ok for beginners. Converter is included, too.
This pen is my third HongDian. I have the coral version. The kitty finial is what made me choose it over the pastel purple M1. I've been using their Year of the Rabbit pen daily since I got it. They have quickly become my favorite Chinese pen brand, and that year of the rabbit pen has edged out my vanishing points as my favorite daily driver, though they'd come back into the fold if their converters weren't such trash.
These are also available in plain, silvery, matte-finished aluminum with no anodized colour coating for those concerned about the colour wearing or chipping away like Dr. Brown mentioned toward the end of his review. I seem to remember a very similar all-metal pocket pen with conical ends instead of flat ones that I think is also made by Hongdian. So there are different versions of it that should be able to please just about anybody.
Thanks for this! Does this take universal type cartridges? I am considering getting ine of these. The converter capacity seems quite small, hence my curiosity about cartridges. Thanks again for this review.
@@Tomasor3 F nib in both. I lost one, a friend gifted me a replacement, then I found the other. Most of my pens are F nib. I do have some EF, Stubs, a couple Mediums, a Fude, and one Architecture. I have maybe 20 pens, no big collector, and nothing expensive really. A poor man.
Agree it’s a very fine pen, especially for the price. Also agree about the importance of including a converter. I like cats and Taoism, but wish they had left the finial plain. That’s my only complaint besides the mis-advertising as a Ti nib. Have a good end of the summer recess.
Dr Brown you hit the nail on the head there "cough Visconti". In my mind, a company like Visconti as a luxury brand with a luxury price tag Visconti should be tuning each pen they sell especially when the idea of hand made means higher quality. Now what you have in your hand works, that HongDian works and it's probably the price of a coffee. It's a great pen. c: Chelsea
I've got 4 Hongdians so far and every one of them has been a swell writer right out of the box. They've also been surprisingly well made for the $$$. Their fude nibs are great too.
It is thin like a pen should be for confortable long writing, it is light and it is not wet. Perfect. And it is *BLACK.* My preference is refill than converter. Converters hold too little ink.

I have one. May be the best EF nib I’ve ever used.
I have a few HongDian's, including two M2s. They're really good value pens, not had a problem with any of them and they all write nicely.

I love pocket pens. I have two of these pens: the blue and the brown ones. They write very well. Thanks for an excellent review.

One of my favorite pens! (I have the blue.) Thanks for the full discussion and review.

Hahah such a genuine reaction out of almost ruining the pen when you dropped it 😂

I was thinking in getting one...
FINALLY!
Have been waiting for more hondgian!
My favourite brand !
I just got one of these in the other day. Such a smooth nib for such a low price.
I am a big fan of metal pocket pens... may have to add this Hongdian to my collection. Thanks for another excellent review, Dr. Brown!
I have been considering getting a Hongdian pen. Thanks for the Review.

Nice new glasses Stephen 😊

How is that, in terms of size, compared with Kaweco Sport?
It takes standard ink cartridges, won‘t it?

Thus is the M2, the submarine-shaped is the M1.
Mine wrote out of the box too... only the little pin holding the clip in place fell out, so I returned it.
I have the M2 in Black Forest with EF nib. I find it to be just as good a writer as Kaweco or Gravitas.
Thanks for this! Does this take universal type cartridges? I am considering getting ine of these. The converter capacity seems quite small, hence my curiosity about cartridges. Thanks again for this review.
Agree. I have two. Lovely little pens.
What nib you liked more?

@@janmckenzie thanks for the info, i will get this with fine and planning to pair it with a twsbi eco ef, not poor bro, i only have 2 pens for now
@@Tomasor3 That will be a great pair of pens.
I just bought Hongdian M2 with EF nib, but I think the writing is not so smooth.

Heh, here before half of the video is turned upside down to make the whole thing legible :) - other than that, excellent review as always!
It's a superstar pen!
I feel like I've just watched Picasso flogging Dulux! 😲
I got one of these as an alternative to the Kaweco Sport and I love it.

Nice, first comment…20’ish € in Amazon , hope that the paint will not be easily scratched , thanks for sooo many years of videos !
Look closer at the finial... farting cats...
LOL! I think what you are seeing is cat whiskers, but the interpretation is hilarious!
Entertaining and honest as always, great review Stephen….jude
